Topic: Writing a Critical Review of Literature: A Practical Guide for English Graduate Students
Abstract:
glrjournalAs an integral part of dissertations and theses, research scholars in different disciplines require to write a comprehensive chapter on "literature review" that establishes the conceptual and theoretical foundations of an empirical research study. This, however, poses an intellectual challenge to produce a critical review of the published research on a given topic. Therefore, this paper addresses the students problems of writing the literature review in a thesis or dissertation at the graduate and postgraduate levels. It explains the process and steps of reviewing literature for a thesis chapter. These steps include; a) critical reading and note-taking, b) writing a summary of the reviewed literature, c) organization of literature review, and d) the use of a synthesis matrix. The last part of the paper offers suggestions on how to write critically and make the researcher's voice explicit in the chapter.com/article/Writing-a-Critical-Review-of-Literature:-A-Practical-Guide-for-English-Graduate-Students

Topic: Universal Psychological Mechanisms of Guilt and Redemption: An Analysis of the Scarlet Letter and Raja Gidh
Abstract:
Freud’s trifurcated concept of human nature asserts that unlike other emotional states, guilt is a quite complicated feeling which requires a differentiated and powerful brain. A human brain, being cognizant of this uniqueness, is capable of self-appraisal and self-censure. The present study penetrates the intricacies of human mind through the study of protagonists of The Scarlet Letter and Raja Gidh. The concept of Freudian superego is used to examine the two characters, Dimmesdale and Qayyum, set in completely different temporal and spatial dimensions of human society. The parameters of psychoanalytical interpretation describes the human psychological distress and fight against the mental chaos after crossing the ethical boundaries of morality. It postulates that Freudian psychoanalysis contributes effectively to research in literary criticism beyond the social, cultural and linguistic boundaries as it highlights the universality of unique human feelings.

Topic: ELT Syllabus: Hegemonic Sabotaging of Pakistan’s Ideology at HSSC level
Abstract:
English Language Teaching has become a compulsory subject in the curricula of many developing countries. There has been an increase in the trend of skeptic viewing of the credibility of this subject for teaching only a language and not its ideology and culture. Studies show that under the impact of ELT learners develop a positive attitude to English culture and depreciation of the indigenous one. Same is the case in Pakistan. English ideologies and cultural representation were uncovered through the application of CDA. The main ideologies found in these books were superiority of “Us/Self” and the inferiority of “Them/Other”. The paper present the source and target culture in their true perspective making the source culture part of esteem instead of the foreign culture.

Topic: On Being Ugly: An Analysis of Arundhati Roy’s Beauty Norms in The Ministry of Utmost Happiness
Abstract:
Beauty in the world of art is one of the most celebrated ideas. In this paper, Arundhati Roy’s novel The Ministry of Utmost Happiness is analyzed with reference to one of its major character, Anjum, an ugly transgender. Adopting the theoretical framework of Halberstam (2005) this paper argues that the physical appearance, either ugly or beautiful, shapes the attitudes of people towards each other. People, who are considered ugly according to social standards, suffer harassment and abuse at various stages of their life in different ways. Topic: The Culture of Silence and Secrets: Repressions and Psychological Disorders among Pakistani Housewives in Fiction
Abstract:
Pakistani housewives suffer emotional and psychological repression in their daily lives, which result in the mental instability and psychological disorders. Through the analysis of two short stories by Pakistani feminist writers Shaila Abdullah and Rukhsana Ahmad, this paper studies the repressions of Pakistani housewives, and their emotional sufferings, to identify the long-lasting effects of emotional abuse among Pakistani women. Using the Freudian theory of unconscious as theoretical basis, this paper analyzed the unconscious of both female protagonists, the stereotypical Pakistani housewives. Through narrative analysis of both short stories, it is concluded that due to the Pakistani culture of silence and secrets unconscious of women becomes their cage, a cage that restrains all their unexpressed emotions, fears and memories. This paper suggests consciousness raising among Pakistani women regarding the significance of their psychological health, which can destroy their lives without them knowing about it

Topic: Compounding in Pashto: An Analysis of Compound and Compound- Complex Adjectives
Abstract:
Compounding as the word formation process is common across languages. Pashto language uses it as a productive morphological process. The paper aims at the structural description of compound and compound-complex adjectives in the language. For this purpose the data were collected through discourse centered method, Pashto newspapers and Pashto programmes on T.V and radio. The data is analyzed using Plag’s (2003) work on word formation in English as theoretical framework. The analysis proves that the grammatical categories exploited in order to derive non-simple adjectives are that of noun, verb and adjective. Further, it also reveals the fact that compound-complex adjectives are derived through synthetic compounding. It also denote the fact that in cases where compound-complex words are formed, the suffixed is invariably attached to the element on the right.

Topic: Concordance between Test Items and Lesson Objectives of Pedagogical Discourse
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to see if there is any discrepancy between constructed response test items and learning objectives of Grade IX English Textbook published by Punjab Textbook Board, Lahore. As product oriented syllabi have clearly defined objectives, each lesson of the book contains a specified set of objectives. The researcher studied these objectives and their relation to the test items set in annual and supplementary exams conducted by Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Islamabad. It was a descriptive study and the data was interpreted using the theoretical framework propounded by Robert J. Marzano and Johns Kendall (2007). It was found that though most of the objectives fulfilled the recommended criteria of the taxonomy. Yet, they remained unfruitful as the test items are not related to them. Thus, the textbook needs to be improved in this regard.

Topic: Scale Development for Teaching Appraisal
Abstract:
The study finds if teachers' success in classroom is determined by the efficacy of teaching skills. Successful and effective teaching depend on several factors including level of knowledge, classroom management skills and students assessment. Evaluating the effectiveness of teachers is a challenging task due to the absence of standardized scale for assessing teachers’ classroom disposition. The present study develops and validate a scale for the evaluation of teachers’ teaching skills. Keeping in consideration the previous scales, literature and teaching skills, a scale comprising of 27 items is developed. It is then validated in pilot testing. The developed scale is used for the appraisal of 60 teachers for their teaching skills. The coefficient of reliability for the scale was 0.822 which is acceptable for the scales to be used in social sciences.
