and while im at it can i just say how much i love the addition of retsarra to the arcadion cast. i love dancing green/sugar riot too dont get me wrong (and i hope we get to have more of them in the quests of the heavyweight tier) but something about him just ties the entire cast together in such a grounded way that i enjoy. there's been a connection between wicked thunder and brute bomber all along and it was a regular guy. he was dating eutrope and he liked her a lot and she really liked him. he shared a childhood with hector. the arcadion is full of people who know each other in really mundane ways. they're not coworkers on the edge of creation, they're not fated across timelines and dimensions, they're not from other planets or anything. their relationships with each other don't really transcend any otherworldly boundaries. he was her ex-boyfriend. he was a childhood friend. and they're just as important to each other as every other relationship we've seen in every other raid series. that tether to reality is so to my tastes and i just adore it!

and i said this before but because of the limits of an optional raid series questline, they don't have a ton of time to flesh out this new cast so they seem to be doing it through theme music and what little they can squeeze into the quests. which means every bit of information they give me on retsarra just raises more questions and alarm bells for me.

he explains that his purpose for life is tied to being an arcadion champion by vaguely alluding to an unhappy life before. but it makes me wonder what kind of unhappiness that was and what kind of person would willingly accept the deterioration of their soul if it meant they didnt have to feel that sort of unhappiness again. he goes as far as blaming alexandria as a whole for it ('the jobs arranged for me were tedious and there was no way to escape this nation's dreary reality'), which is interesting to me because it feels like one of the very rare times the narrative points explicitly to alexandria's system being the problem rather than having the npcs blatantly point the blame at the alexandria's mascot, sphene.

he admits he knew about his soul corroding and not only accepts it as an understandable causality in his debt to the arcadion president but withholds his feelings when his childhood friend turns himself into a monster and dies horrifically for the entertainment of others, knowing full well that this could happen to him too. yeah, he sheds a tear but he quickly just turns back to the wol. (and later openly regrets not joining with them to try to save hector, which i feel like is the more honest reaction hes having to his death) this is probably because again, not enough time to really flesh this moment out, but if i choose to take it at face-value and ignore all the doylist reasons as to why he would react like that, it's the sort of response to tragedy that seems incomprehensible. every other arcadion fighter who was informed about the consequences of using feral souls either decided to retire for their health, ran off to find a cure, or went into complete denial about it. all those are understandable reactions to me. to double down and decide that not just your life, but your soul is worth sacrificing for the status quo is crazy! what is wrong with you!

well, we know what's wrong with him. beyond the debt he feels he owes to the president, he's pretty clear that he does this for himself, that he's tied his identity and purpose to being an arcadion champion, to the point where even eutrope points out that she didn't know how else to save him because she knew he wouldn't give up being howling blade. to him, giving that up is just as bad as dying, as tearing your soul apart. that's not normal. that's not normal! its crazy that this well-liked, handsome regular joe with a robust social life and a 'clean-cut' reputation for being a decent guy also happens to be this bad about his own sense of self and is also borderline suicidal. and hes a robot wolf dark knight. this tier was so goddamn good
