7 unexpected things about camping in the desert and hiking in Big Bend National Park: 1. Camping in the desert can look and feel isolated even is you are just one mile from the next campsite. At night is a little scary but perfect for a star party. 💫 ✨ 2. Very cold morning and hot afternoons. When you are camping in the desert you wake up feeling freezing. 🥶The average morning temperature is in the 30s and by mid-day the temperature rise to 90s. Is a brutal 60 degrees change in temperature in about 4 hours. Put on a lot of layers just like I did and bring with you a bagpack to put all your cold weather gear close to lunch time. 🤣 3. Don't eat or drink anything two hours before going to sleep. Believe me, camping in the desert is scary and you don't want to walk in the desert, full of crazy javelinas with bad temper, in the middle of the night to use the compost toilet. 🚽🐗🐽 4. Be aware of Wildlife. When you are hiking in Big Bend you must hike with a bear spray in your hand. Here encounter a black bear or a mountain lion is very likely specially in the mornings and evenings. 🐻🦁🥾 5. Be prepare for extremes. The terrain in Big Bend National Park hiking trails is rocky and uneven. But, if you want to hike the South Rim be ready to ascend 3.8 miles using steep stairs which can take you up to 4 hours to the top. 😓🚶‍♀️ 6. Accidents happens. When you are hiking the South Rim be aware of the horses. Big Bend personnel uses horses to carry the trash from the upper South Rim campsites to Chisos Mountain Headquarters. What you need to know is that sometimes these horses can slip with lose rocks and fail very close to you in the trail. If this happen, you have to get out of the way super fast and believe me when I said their is no way to run. 🐴🚮 7. Don't be fool with the stunning views. I don't remember seeing too much railing in Big Bend National Park, that means that you are responsible for your own safety. The Window Trail ends in a frame view of the Chihuahuan Desert. But, don't get to close because the top of the Window pour-off is slickrock with no railings and if you fail you will go down 780 feet. ⛰😩 (at Big Bend National Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CIJw7UNBoBuXsBYijEgAoFCjkd1sr-uVp5f2PE0/?igshid=1xvt3s4cu3b68

Third hike, Santa Elena Canyon Trail. Easy (thanks God) 1.7 miles round trip hike. The hike combined crossing Terlingua creek, muddy feet, ascends, descends, and for some a nice walk or swim in the river. I wish I had brought my kayak to paddle in the Santa Elena Canyon. #santaelenacanyon #bigbendnationalpark (at Santa Elena Canyon, Big Bend) https://www.instagram.com/p/CIEmFmMhJ4Rka3sbTEtqm0eSSiosjkjSTeJRw80/?igshid=93wlrx5scb7q

Second hike, the South Rim. A 6.5 hours long and strenuous 12 miles hike. I saw two bears in the first 3 minutes of the ascend. The hike started on the steeper and challenging Pinnacles trail and continue on Laguna Meadows trail. The best part of this adventure was the stunning vistas at 7,400 feet of elevation.
