Maison Ikkoku Episode 14

Of all the Maison Ikkoku episodes, this is probably my favorite in terms of how it adapted the original story from the manga. I love how they made the whole misunderstanding more complicated, and Kyoko's scenes in the rain are visually stunning.

They even managed to add Kozue to the story and make Kyoko feel jealous of her, even though she didn't appear in the original manga chapter. Probably the only occasion on which anime Kyoko was more jealous than her manga counterpart.

From the very first chapters, Godai showed a natural gift for winning the affection of children — a gift that would lead him to become a nursery teacher some years later.

I love how just the idea of being related to the Ichinose gave him chills 😂

Godai's Evolution Over the Years

To celebrate Godai's birthday, I wanted to create this post about how his character design has evolved over the years by Rumiko's hand.

There are 10 collages in total, each corresponding to a specific year during the serialization of Maison Ikkoku.

Rumiko continued drawing Godai a few more times after Maison Ikkoku ended. In 1988, she made an artwork to promote the movie (top left); she also drew him during Ranma’s serialization in the ‘90s (top right); and finally, there are drawings from the 2000s (bottom two images).

Today is May 4th—Godai’s official birthday! 🎉 aka Rumiko’s best male lead. Without him, Maison Ikkoku wouldn’t be the masterpiece it is.

Happy birthday, Yusaku!

For those wondering where this date comes from— in chapter 96 of the manga, there's a scene where Yagami's dad is looking at Godai's CV, and his birthday appears on the paper along with other personal information.

A symptom of depression is giving up activities that once brought joy and becoming distracted. Kyoko can't mask hers, no matter how hard she tries.

A technique to fight it is to resume those activities, likely the incentive for Kyoko to keep seeing Mitaka at the Tennis Club.
