GIO fiddles aimlessly with the newfound unraveling thread of his last remaining favorite sweater— an almost perfect analogy for the present state of his life. A wistful sigh escapes his lips— not for his old life, but for the feeling of complacency it once afforded him. He’d taken his future of mediocrity for granted. Now, he was exceptional, but not in a way that tangibly mattered. To Gio at least.  He’d managed to survive, but what value did that possess in the grand scheme of things? In a hundred years, he’d be nothing more than the tail-end number of a gradually decreasing population count.  

In the meantime, he’ll serve his part in warding off his own existential gloom, and perhaps aid in the alleviating of someone else’s. This is how Gio saw his and Cleo’s acquaintanceship— paths that would’ve otherwise never been crossed, but a growing friendship that felt strangely fated. He grows from not minding her presence, to even appreciating it. Not that he’d ever admit that. ❝My sister's dog woke me up barking again,❞ he says for no reason in particular if only to complain— his own odd way of striking off the conversation. Social skills were rather lost on the paperclip heir. ❝If you’re interested in adopting a dog, I’ve got one available for free.❞ It’s difficult to parse if he’s joking. Gio’s not entirely sure himself.  A vaguely mischievous smirk remains on his lips.

ANOTHER unfortunate series of events resulted in him sharing a room with Gigi a few times on vacation as a child (for their parents thought it was unreasonable for a child to have an entire hotel suite to themselves on vacation, regardless of the actual expense). Even worse, it was two against one: Gio versus Gigi and Gigi’s beloved Tinky.   ❝Tinkerbell can sleep on your bed, the floor, or outside, but I can assure you he isn’t sleeping on my bed, ❞ Gio declares without glancing at Gigi. He shrugs. ❝I dunno, go ask the front desk for an extra blanket or something.❞ How the hell did this little ass dog survive this long during an apocalypse anyway? (certainly not one of his most well-received points by his sister, but did he not so obviously have a point?)  ❝I'm keeping the window bed. Eldest child privilege. ❞

WHO: Gigi Layne & Gio Layne (@godfalls) WHERE: Mountain Sky Hotel; the Layne's bedroom

Though Gigi was used to her fair share of hotels, the Mountain Sky Hotel wouldn't have been her first pick. First of all, the location didn't even have room service or a cute bus boy/girl to bring her the little bottles of shampoo and conditioners. Second of all, she was forced to share a room with GIO LAYNE, and although the duo shared a last name, they weren't designed to live in a small room together.

❝If you're going to make me sleep by the window, you at least need to let Tinky sleep in your bed.❞ Gigi argued, pointing at her five-pound chihuahua. ❝You know he gets cold easily, and all his best fur coats are back in New York.❞

(   archie madekwe, cis man, he/him  )  be on the lookout for giovanni “gio” layne in valdez, the thirty one year old survivor. they were last spotted at mountain sky hotel as a civilian, strapped with a nail file. they’re widely known for being independent, but can be quite snarky when put under pressure, and considering they were an heir before the apocalypse, it makes sense. super rich kids by frank ocean weirdly plays every time they’re around.

BACKGROUND ;

before: enter the elder brother to the layne family’s paperclip empire. (you low key resent your grandfather for naming them paperclips— i mean, couldn’t he come up with something more imaginative?)  half-hearted attempts at carving out an identity outside of your family’s wealth fall short time and time again. eventually, you accept things for what they are (aka coming to terms with being a talentless nepo baby.) you secure a job in art curation. it passes the time and puts exciting people on your radar.  during: your sister drags you out to see the northern lights (a terrible idea, purely from an astrological standpoint, and you knew this). an emergency stop begins looking more and more permanent, especially when realizing some peculiarly slow moving individuals surrounding them. after finally convincing gigi that there’s literally no piece of zombie media in which a zombie is attempting to rob anyone of their custom van cleef bracelet, the two of you manage to make your escape to the mountain sky hotel. after: sure, you’re just as disappointed as gigi about being stuck in a dump like this, but you’ve always insisted on being better than her at everything, and if that meant being better at surviving a zombie apocalypse, then so be it. so far, it’s certainly been easier said than done.  oh, how far you’ve fallen from your 10th-floor loft.
