Wesley tbh is the only human that Illyria even vaguely likes or respects. They tolerate the rest at BEST. 

Yes some of that is the Fred Influence but most of it is genuinely because of just how he interacts with them on the whole. Yes he is WILDLY DISRESPECTFUL but he’s assertive, fearless and uncowed by their presence in a way that Illyria comprehends and respects. It’s why they tolerate his grief despite how retched they find it and turn to him for guidance as opposed to Angel or the others. 

Like quite literally the only shit keeping Illyria in check is Kat ( seriously thanks to the Jasmine cannibalism boost Kat is likely stronger atm + living followers ), Wesley and Spike being like “ please Do Not.

one of my fave fics / stories ever honestly is LA Is the Hell You Make It by touchstoneaf which is part of a larger spuffy fic series and takes place during the (Hel)LA period immediately post series / that is the spiritual season 6 of angel.

part of it that i absolutely adore is that illyria is dead ass dragging wesley’s corpse rolled up in cloth around as they trek thru HelLA and will go back and get it when spike tries to dump it bc they’re practically in a desert and it’s rotting and being generally awful. then they keep it on a chaise lounge in their penthouse suite when they settle into the hotel so there’s just this HORRIFIC SEMI-MUMMIFIED WESLEY JUST AROUND. and the SMELL is apparently SOMETHING. 

and it is all because illyria doesn’t know how to handle grief and feels unstable without wesley and is quietly hoping to regain some of their former power and revive him. and i just--
