Vlad gave it some thought before bobbing his head back and forth. “While sweets will cheer me up in the present moment, I’m not sure they will fix my present situation.” He returned her smile with a tired one, feeling the need to plop into a chair.
“While I’m not the biggest fan of beer,” being from a land flowing with wine and vodka would do that, “I’m sure anything with a buzz will lift my spirits at this point, even beer.”
‘Not your current situation?’ Meriset screwed up her face. Well, it must have been bad if it was something sweets couldn’t fix. The woman sighed, patting the man on the arm before letting her hands fall. ‘You look plagued, dear. You know, I always carry around a letter opener just in case. You never know when someone will say something stupid. Maybe you should do the same.’ Meriset offered Vlad another big grin. ‘Perhaps a mead will be more to your… tastes? I have more reserves of mead, anyhow. Oh! I have a plum mead that I’ve been dying to open. Will you indulge me awhile? I’ll offer any advice I can for whatever seems to be troubling you.’ Vlad didn’t have much of a choice, Meriset was already pulling him inside.

Lukas breathed out a gentle laugh, shaking his head as he did.
‘I’m sorry, Meri,’ he said, ‘I can’t do that. I’d never hear the end of it from my kids if they found out she was anywhere other than here.’
He watched the woman as she interacted with his cat, ‘but you’re more than welcome to visit her whenever you want. Sure, it would be an awful long trip just to see her, but she’s definitely worthy of visits~’
Meriset tutted gently, looking up to Lukas with dark, disapproving eyes. Still, she couldn’t blame him, Jasmina was godsent – of course he wouldn’t give her up so easily.
‘You hear that, darling? Baba loves you so much.’ She cooed, coddling Jasmina like a baby in her arms, rubbing the purring cat’s tummy. ‘I will have to visit her all the time, Lukas. You will never be rid of me.’

Despite Maia’s best efforts, she could not help but blush. Skirts to their waists! To display their ecstasy! What a tempting, titillating notion that was! Maia was no prude, of course, but to be surrounded by so many naked women, all at once and with their nakedness so boldly highlighted–! “I-I can’t wait to see it,” Maia said, hiding her flushed cheeks behind her hands. “You know, I don’t think I have a cat goddess. Have my people imported her yet? I’ll have to check, and make sure we’re worshiping properly. And you know, it–the festival–almost sounds Bacchic.”
Maia continued, babbling to fill the vacuous cavern between her ears. “Alexander loved the Liberator–Ariadne’s man–and he worshiped like that. Something tells me it was different when he lifted his skirts though. You know,” Maia seized Meriset’s hands and held her fingers to her lips. “I could have some of my flock sent for, to provide milk for the offering. Rhodes isn’t so far; I could have wine and jars and all sorts of lovely things sent for the offering, and for the party, and for Memphis.”
An ever-so-slight discomfort settled in Maia’s chest while she thought about her last trip to Memphis. Was it really a trip? Meriset probably didn’t know about it, which was probably for the best. And it certainly wasn’t seeing Memphis. “Do you have your own home there? Or do you live with others in the palace?”
Meriset watched Maia’s excitement with gentle eyes. She had held so much resentment for so long towards those who came to her land, that it was almost jarring to see someone match her ecstasy over something so simple as a festival. Of course, they were never simple for Meriset – they were an escape.
‘Maia, you’re too kind—’ she started, voice trailing as her fingers brushed soft lips. How could she possibly think with such tenderness before her? ‘Uh—are you sure it will arrive in time? I don’t want you to stress over it all. I want you to be able to enjoy yourself as much as I will.’  She couldn’t stop herself, reaching her fingers up a little further to brush over Maia’s cheek. Warm and wonderful.
‘I live… in the palace.’ There was reservation then as she spoke, lips pulled into a slight but noticeable line. ‘But, I do have my own space—and we won’t be bothered if—well, if you chose to stay with me.’ A sudden anxiety swept over Meriset, and the woman shook her head. ‘I can buy us someplace else. Somewhere by the water, perhaps? Oh, but I wouldn’t want the crocodiles bothering you, hm. Perhaps you’d prefer somewhere overlooking the city centre?’

“Mmmm, bread.” Just the mention of it brought a sweet little smile to her face. “You really only need three things: A jug of wine, a loaf of bread, and thou. Er. Love. I collect bread recipes. I don’t think I have any from you; maybe I’ll give you one of my recipes for your bread.” Focus, Viola, focus. She just really loved bread. “Maybe I didn’t visit. I’d have your bread if I did, but I don’t think I do, unless it’s like some of my Arabic recipes…” She considered it for a second, counted on her fingers.
“I wish I did visit. So many of my relatives found lovers in Egypt. Maybe you had a daughter laying around for me too?”
Meriset watched Viola as she counted, dark eyes fixed on the other’s moving digits a moment before she turned them upwards again. ‘I’m sure they’d be much the same,’ she said, barely stopping to swallow before she spoke. ‘I can’t imagine my bread being any different to the recipes you already know, but I can note down my flatbread recipe for you. Perhaps you can expand upon it for me. I’ve never been good at that.’ Meriset smiled, dusting off her hands on her skirt. ‘A daughter? No, no—I didn’t—I had a brother… a long time ago. I lost him when Memphis was abandoned. I had hoped he would come back but… well,’ Meriset shrugged, a sombre sort of smile on her face. ‘I do have a son, but I believe he’d be a relation to you.’

I am having the MOST stressful morning so what’s a fun Egypt fact you think should be mainstream knowledge but just isn’t for some weird reason
hmmm I'm going to have to say the crocodile dung pessary, even though this would lead to some very unfortunate listicles because I know the internet.
still, there very much does exist an ancient Egyptian contraceptive recipe that requires a woman to insert a suppository of crocodile dung into her vagina, which would harden and block any sperm from entering the womb.
which is certainly something we can all have a chuckle about, but the actually interesting part about it, and why I'd want that fact to be more mainstream, is that it makes clear the Egyptians knew the functionality behind procreative sex and sought to have recreational sex without immediately getting knocked up.
because by extension, it should be mainstream knowledge that virginity wasn't a concept in ancient Egypt. They didn't care about sex before marriage, whether it was a man or a woman engaging in it. Adultery was very bad, but sex before you started a family with someone? eh go wild kids.
it'd be a refreshing antidote against the idea that the ancient Egyptians were orientalistically ~sensual~ with their harems and golden dicks (looking at you, Wilbur Smith). Egyptians were just very practical about sex.
@thatlittleegyptologist @somecunttookmyurl @23-tiny-wishes @ikchen have any personal favourites to add?

‘Do you want to hold her?’ Lukas asked as he looked at Meriset with a smile, ‘she doesn’t bite, I promise.’
He had his cat, Jasmina, in his arms. He leaned down and pressed a kiss to her head before holding her out for the other to take.
‘She’s super soft,’ he said with another smile, ‘it makes her the perfect pet to cuddle up with. Isn’t she just the cutest~?’
With eagerness, Meriset clapped her hands together before making grabby hands for the small baby. ‘Oh, what a sweet, delicate, little angel…’ She cooed, taking Jasmina from Lukas’ arms, bringing her right into her own chest and kissing her cute, little head. ‘She’s so darling! Oh, you are so lucky. Look at her little arms! Oh…’ Another kiss and another and another. ‘Lukas, you must let me have her.’

Vlad was certainly not expecting to see Meriset, but he welcomed her hug warmly. Sometimes a friendly face from the past is the best medicine. “It’s too hot not to shave!” Very true, especially since his dark hair would trap the heat. He beamed warmly, though his tired eyes disagreed with her. “I’ve been better, but I think things will work out.”
Her expression changed to one of concern as Vlad spoke, hands moving to hold each of the man’s arms as if it would steady them both. ‘Is it anything sweets can’t fix? I have a whole bowl of zalabya that’s just waiting to be dug into.’ She offered the Romanian a comforting smile, or at least she hoped it would be taken as such.
‘Or will beer be better for your palate? You know no one makes beer like we do!’

Warmth flooded an olive complexion in the palms of her elder. Such sentiment a rewarding memory of the days of her youth, clinging to her father’s tunics and his constant doting, a welcomed thought that no longer belonged in the present. Carlotta knew Meriset meant no harm by her compliments, it has been quite a while since she was in her presence. Even now, Meriset has not changed. Always the mother figure, which was probably why Carlotta adored her most of all the Ancients.
“You still make it from scratch, right?” She questioned, as if that was even required to be asked. “I’d love some.”
Meriset was beaming, smile bright and sunny as she gave Carlotta a once over with her eyes. She might’ve thought the girl too skinny if she hadn’t been working on herself and her judgement of others so diligently. It was just good to see the younger Nation in such good health.
‘Oh, you know I do.’ Meriset grinned, linking her arm through Carlotta’s to drag her along. ‘Wood fired, too. I could never work those little… nob things on your fancy electric oven.’
Coming into the kitchen, Meriset moved away from Carlotta, rummaging through her refrigerator. ‘I think I have some still from a batch I made the other day. I like to make enough to give to the children around the neighbourhood. Really, you would think their parents don’t feed them at all! Sit down, sit down—I’ll get you a slice. Tell me, what have you been up too?’ She turned her smile back to the younger woman, dropping the container of cake on the counter.
‘Thirsty, dear?’

“Oh are you—” Mireille stopped and blinked as she looked Meriset before her eyes turned to look at the crumbling pastry in front of her. An expression of interest was plastered on her face as she tried to figure out whether or not this was a trick or an attempt of assassination. It seemed to her that Meriset was harmless enough to not kill her; especially since the other just ate a piece in front of her. A smile was present on her face as her fingers became sticky reaching out for the one of the honey cakes and biting it with delicacy. “Yes, they taste marvelous! I can taste the love and care someone has put in it.” She mentioned as she took another bite, even though, all she did taste was cardamom and honey. “If you can kindly write the recipe to me, I think I might find myself baking it…some day.” She was not much a cook or baker, but she can try…some day.
‘Some day is as good as any day,’ Meriset beamed that big white smile, turning to the vendor and asking for a few more of those sickly-sweet cubes in a container. ‘You really can find the most amazing things at these markets. Do you have anything like this back home? I suppose those, uh—outer suburb sort of markets? Farmers Markets?’ Meriset hummed, starting down the way again with Mireille in tow. ‘I always spend far too much money… It’s the perfumes that get me.’
