Ive been thinking and these are my non yaoiful thoughts on pause + ethos uhc rivalry. putting this under the cut because it got wayy longer than i anticipated and the target audience is not very large LOL
i think i mostly agree with the general consensus ive seen about what the situation was. in my opinion (and that of many youtube commenters and redditors etc) its largely because of psychological reasons that pause always won, because he was getting in ethos head. at this point in time (everything i say here will refer to 2012-2014 ish) etho is a good shot and clearly knows his way around pre 1.9 pvp techniques as seen in (for 1 example) the episode where he teaches genny pvp (mindcrack s3e93). however both of those things also apply to pause, he is really good with a bow (id argue both of them were known for this) and sword, and also plays more pvp focused games/fps games than etho (outside of minecraft - etho at this point is quite into minecraft pvp games).
since they are relatively evenly matched on a raw skill level, it comes down to their mental games. to me ethos main strength that allows him to do so well in uhc is his careful planning, thinking up new strategies like the groundhog hole in s5, knowledge of game mechanics, keeping a level head in pvp situations etc. basically he wins through being prepared, thinking + planning ahead. on the other hand pause is more impulsive, unpredictable and plays more aggressively, he tends to rush into combat situations and put himself in danger to get kills but also gets nervous or scared and makes stupid mistakes which makes him less predictable.
etho knows this and says at the start of s3 (the first uhc he's in) that he doesn't want to run into pause because he's a "kill first ask questions later" and "kamikaze" type of person, so even before they'd actually faced each other etho was worried about fighting pause (s3e1). i think this is what causes him to lose in s3, pause is clearly nervous and freaked out that he's meeting someone in the nether unexpectedly but decides he can take him anyway because of their health difference (s3e3). i think if etho had kept a level head he would have been able to take advantage of that and maybe win, but he's already built it up in his head that he doesn't want to fight pause and so i think that shakes him and he makes the mistake of setting the ground on fire instead of using lava (s3e3), which got him severely flamed in youtube comments. from there it becomes kind of a self fulfilling prophecy - pause kills etho, etho adds another data point to "pause always beats me" and becomes more nervous and loses again because of his mental.
in season 5 they're the final two players and skype call before they meet each other (s5e7), pause is able to come off as confident on their call and just from listening to them it's clear (or at least to me, maybe that's subjective though) who has the mental upper hand. pause also tells etho he doesn't have any dogs when he actually does and this throws him off when they finally fight each other, etho doesn't think this might be a lie or that he could get in pauses head in a similar way. in this episode etho spends less time trying to trash talk (which imo he is kind of terrible at) and mess with pause, while pause knows how to say things that will throw him off and make him nervous, even tho pause is also nervous he still has the upper hand, this also probably comes partly from knowing he beat etho last time and can do it again. etho also brings 2 lava buckets this time which i personally have always thought was because he messed up by not using the lava bucket the previous time and that got in his head and he fixated on trying to fix the mistakes that made him lose. but that's not really based on any strong evidence so take it with a grain of salt. similarly though pause bringing a dog pack could be because of getting killed by kurts dogs in s3 (s3e3) however this is also just meta at the time afaik like that if you see dogs you should tame them because its an advantage so theres even less evidence for that.
anyway etho still loses so now pause has beat him twice and the idea of their rivalry is forming within the community, this gets in his head and he's aware of pauses effect on him - in s6e1 he says that "i choke every time i fight him" and calls him his "kryptonite" suggesting that he knows there's something specific abt the way pause plays that he's weak to, and he also suggests that it might be the element of surprise thats causing him to lose (honestly just watch the whole clip its so interesting). however i also think the fact that there's this hyped up rivalry between them puts a lot of pressure on etho to win which is another thing that fucks with his mental and causes him to lose. people start joking in non uhc videos about pause being the only person who can kill etho. i think this also puts pressure on pause but he is less affected by it as he's already a kind of highly strung person who plays somewhat erratically so it doesn't affect him as visibly as etho. in s6 etho blames his death to pause on lag (s6e4), whether or not that's true its kind of hard to tell - there was a bit of lag but its hard to say if its the reason etho lost - but i think it is a beautiful cope + seethe moment either way LOL, i don't think etho would consciously make an excuse like that while knowing it wasn't true because he's very focused on being a good sport and a graceful loser but i do thijk it's possible he could have made himself believe it was true as a cope because he was frustrated at dying to pause again. we will never know i guess...
the 2 seasons that etho did best in were season 8, which pause wasn't in and etho won, and season 11 where pause died extremely early on to an enderman and etho came 2nd (which is a whole other can of worms but whatevs), which probably also contributed to the mythology of their rivalry.
i also feel like pause eventually started going for etho even in situations where it would cause him problems later on - in s13 he gets killed by pyro (who's on ethos team) while distracted celebrating that he killed etho (s13e2) and in s15 i can't tell if this is exactly the case but it feels like he hangs back until his team has etho low on health and then goes in for the kill and dies to seth immediately afterwards (s15e3). this is kind of getting into speculation territory but it seems like the whole mythology is causing him to be more concerned about killing specifically etho (when they encounter each other at least) and this leads to well. him killing etho more times LOL. in s16, ethos last uhc, he is eliminated by doc and pause types this in the chat (s16e5)
Tumblr media
"that was my kill doc" which i feel like also supports the idea that pause at this point feels an expectation? or an entitlement? to be the person who kills etho. but it could also be just like. a joke and im reading too far into things LOL. anyway after that etho quits uhc so that's how it ends i guess. i don't know how else it really could have ended that would've been better or worse. i don't know what to say about that really..
anyway in summary, etho thinks pause always beat him because he's "terrible at sword combat" (beefs hc9e65) and pause thinks he always beat etho because etho has bad aim (captive minecraft 4 e9). neither of these are true imo, it comes down to pauses aggressive play style causing problems for ethos mentality, etho getting caught up in the fact that pause always wins against him, and pause going out of his way to kill etho in certain situations. Um yaa thanks for reading this long ass rambling post i love you if you actually read all of this LOL. would love to hear thoughts feel free to agree or disagree with me as im not an expert on this topic by any means. byeeee ^.^

I REALLY need an Etho win for Past Life don’t even joke lad
He’s in his natural environment. He’s been through it all with his let’s play world. HE’S ALLIED WITH SCOTT.
And I think it’ll be funny to have a non-Evo member win a very Evo-coded season.

First Hermitcraft stream post Past Life episode 1, some fun talk about it, especially with Scar. Some notes about that conversation under the cut, ft. Cleo being the biggest Ethubs fan.
Cleo and Scar wonder that the other´s episodes were so long - were they not entertaining enough? (jokingly)
Scar tells Cleo about the Cabincore Boys in the hot tub. Cleo, coming very close: "I´m sorry, the what?" Scar enthusiastically tells them about his team. Cleo says that´s a really nice team for him, really trustworthy and solid. Sometimes he ended up playing the villain for an entire season. Scar: "Bdubs and Etho are gonna keep me straight, and Scott?" Cleo: Ah, mmm, doubtful. Um..." Scar: "Oh wait." Cleo, laughing: "Bdubs and Etho, keep you straight? Mm?" (Later claims they have to say it because chat expects them to.)
Cleo. "Etho is very trustworthy, even though he pretends he isn´t." Scott would lay down his life, most of the time, for his team. And Bdubs won´t turn on Etho - which means he´d turn on the rest of them first, if it comes to it. Scar understands that Bdubs would leave Scar and Scott to die to save Etho. Cleo: "And it will be really good entertaining content, but you will be dead."
Scar asks Cleo if they´ve burned anything down yet. Cleo says no but the losers are really begging for it. Thinks it´s about 50:50 if Joel will lift his team up or end up at their level and is hoping for the latter.
Cleo mentions how Pearl is always like "everyone around me is dying," doesn´t think she´ll have to worry about that this time.
Cleo and Scar agree they should have a gravestone for Mumbo and Lizzie in their absence.
(around 0:25) Scar invites Cleo to the hot tub. Cleo: "Chilling one block apart, obviously." Scar: "Of course." Cleo: "Except for Etho and Bdubs, obviously."
(around 0:35) Who´s the favorite to win? Cleo thinks Scott and Grian might try to win and are pretty good, but also thinks it´s Etho´s turn. Scar: "You think we should lay down our lives for Etho?" Cleo: "No I think you should lay down your life for Etho."
Scar: what if Bdubs does? Cleo: "... I can´t imagine... well, if Bdubs lays his life down for Etho, I can´t imagine Etho being okay. I think that´d break him, I think that´d be it."
What if Skizz or Jimmy win? Cleo: then the Life series is over, it´s never happening again.
Cleo expects Joel to get so frustrated with his team he has an "if the ship burns everything burns" moment. It's an easy team to get rid of because they're "anything for the bit" people.
Some discussion about how everyone is just going chaos mode. Cleo looks forward to lying to people. Scar asks but not to him, right? Cleo says only benign lies.
They meet up with Ren and Gem (as in, Scar and Cleo fly over, Scar kills Ren, Gem kills Scar.) Ren wanted reassurance from Gem that they´re allies and Gem said no because they´re villains. Though they´re not very good at it. Also not very enthused about the team name, Cleo wonders why they let Grian name things.
"I´m not interested in killing people, I am interested in ruining their day." - Cleo
"What´s with all the villainy?" "´cause it´s funny." "Where´s the happiness?" "It makes me happy." - Ren & Cleo
(and then more fun stuff including a group ghastketball game.)
