I don’t doubt that Curly was a caring captain but I think he failed at critical aspects of management including being able to take responsibility during difficult moments. He is good with people like swansea who listen and a have working grasp on the concept of responsibility but catastrophically failed to handle someone as delusional and conceited as Jimmy. We are shown simple instances of his care when he decides to inform the crew early of their being laid off, but the lack of follow up on maintaining moral displays a shortcoming on his ability to actually take accountability for his actions. One of his greaest follies is very clearly: inaction. Stopping Jimmy would have been the responsible course of action in dealing with what he did to Anya. But Curly panics and is unable to do anything besides empty parrot phrases like “we can fix this”.

Why Curly panics and lets Jimmy crash the ship is another point of interest. Why does Curly, the so called “better captain”, struggle to act in difficult situations? Well we are led by his private conversation with Jimmy and psych evaluation with Anya to believe that Curly does not like his job or is at the very least dissatisfied and stressed by it. At his party he describes it as a reality he feels the need to run from, and that makes sense. Being stuck on a ship forced to corral a group of people with challenging interpersonal conflicts, all whilst delivering something as meaningless as mouthwash, you can understand why this is not the life he may want. And yet we see he is also someone who believes in seeing the bigger picture, the 99.9%. He believes in having to sometimes to trudge through the sewers of life in order to appreciate the nice moments. To Curly, the trauma Anya experienced was clearly something that hurt him, we see it in his outraged reaction to her pregnancy. However, we also see a predisposition to endure the difficulties rather than address them head on. This is apparent in how he initially refuses to acknowledge Jimmy as being the perpetrator despite knowing, despite being Told, it was Jimmy for a long time. One can imagine this was something Curly simply treated as a challenge he could “endure” until it was over. This tendency is also illustrated later in his talk when he attempts to assure Jimmy he can make it through the consequences he just has to take things “one day at a time”. In fact, it is only when Jimmy attempts to turn the tables, when he confronts Curly with the idea of having to also bear responsibility for the assault happening under his watch that Curly freezes. This is a push for Curly to act or endure, and Curly as we know would never want to act in such a dilemma. He would rather not act until it was too late.

The only reason why we are to believe Curly is a great captain despite being average at best, is because we see this through the eyes of Jimmy. It’s no coincidence that the one matter Curly couldn’t take responsibility for, the matter that displayed his shortcomings as a captain, is also the matter that Jimmy ignores throughout the entire runtime of mouthwashing: Anya’s assault. , And it is a poetic karma that his lack of action,in the end led him to never be able to act again. That his willful ignorance of the 1%, his inability to see the dead pixel, leads him to be forced to see. Unable to even close his eye - he is forced to witness everything unfold that was the direct result of his inaction.
