Researching Horror | #2

Trevor Hendersons Creations

As I am very shortly going to be making and modelling my own creature for Riverweed Swamp, I thought it would be a good idea to look into other peoples creature creations, which is what lead me to looking into why Trever Henderson’s work was so unsettling in my previous research post, which I believe I now have an answer to.

While I looked into his work, I never talked about some of the creatures he has come up with that I researched, and I think doing that is really important as I think his work is amazing, and looking at his designs will help me get into the mood of coming up with more of my own creatures.

#1 | Long Horse

Long Horse is without a doubt one of Trever Henderson’s most interesting creations. The first he ever revealed about this creature he came up with, was posting a single image captioned: 

“I had that nightmare again, about the horse on the stairs… “

This image is incredibly creepy, as given it is such a compressed low quality style, like what I talked about in my previous post, long horse looks so much more real and unsettling. In the first image it appears to be a horse’s skull on a unsettlingly long neck that stretches back out of the image, and it’s later revealed that’s exactly what it is, though it is just a neck…

The idea of Long Horse is actually incredibly interesting, as it appears at first glance as some horrifying and disturbing demon that is here to torment people, though it’s actually not as it seems. In the space of months Trevor slowly revealed more facts about it that explains what it is, eventually posting enough that people realised what it truly is.

Long Horse is an entity that reveals itself to a person before a terrible event of some sort happens shortly after, almost like a warning to the person that something bad is about to happen similar to the idea that you will see the grim reaper a few hours before you die. While they may look hostile, Long Horse is actually completely passive and means well, as in one of Trever Henderson’s posts, it included a clip from a news article that said women scared out of a forest by strange creature before the forest later burned down, and would have without a doubt kill her if she hadn’t left earlier.

Long Horse appears to be only trying to help people, by saving their lives from scaring them away from dangerous areas, or to those who know who they are, letting the person know that they are in danger of something, or something is about to happen.

The neck Long Horse has is said to appear infinitely long, however it always terminates just out of view of whoever is observing it, meaning they can make their way almost anywhere, or cover the sky of an area in danger.

Overall I think the most interesting part, and also the saddest part of this creature, is how misunderstood it is. People take a glance at it and think it’s here to harm them, when in reality, though it’s not said whether long horse creates the disasters afterwards or not (I don’t think it’s Long Horse that makes the disaster), they are just trying to help by guiding people away from an unsafe area that will result in them dying if they stay, or letting them know kind of like a messenger that something could be about to happen to a family member that’s close to them etc.

#2 | Siren Head

Siren Head is without question Trever Henderson’s most recognised creature he has created. Siren Head is an entity that consists of an incredibly tall thin figure covered in tough, mummified flesh from neck to toe, and arms the length of it’s entire body.

As heard in it’s name it’s head is a metal pole with two sirens breaking off on the way up, and mangled wires coiled all around it. Due to its brown, dried skin, it blends in perfectly with trees when it stands still, and can stay hiding for weeks at a time without moving, luring people closer by playing the screams of it’s past victims and calls for help from its sirens, until someone gets close enough for it to strike, and take it’s latest victim. As you are probably already aware by now, Siren Head is extremely hostile.

Siren Head is said to be found in and on the edges of woods, preying on lost travellers by luring them deep into the woods with its sirens, appearing as their friend or someone in need of help to get them to follow, before blaring its sirens loudly to confuse and disorientate it’s victim, before coming after them.

This video is supposedly what Siren Head is said to sound like, when you have been lured away from safety, and it’s already too late to escape. Though it can make any sound, it typically plays an air raid siren, or some kind of distressing music.

#3 | Cartoon Cat

The first image Trevor posted on the internet for this creature was only accompanied by the the text:

“They’re just like your favourite cartoons”

This creature appears to be inspired by old fashioned cartoons, but clearly he has taken this style and put his own more unsettling twist on it.

This creature is said to be found in abandoned buildings and is extremely hostile, most likely treating those it finds as a cat would treat a mouse, therefore this creature is not something you would want to come across.

Artist research

Trever Henderson  is an Canadian horror artist and illustrator He is known for making Cryptid creatures such as Siren Head, Cartoon Cat, Bridge Worm and others

What I like about his art is that it gives a sense of movement like the creatures in the pictures are coming towards you as u look at them

I just found a good horror youtuber, HannahTheHorrible. I then accidentally clicked on a recommended video by a guy named whang! talking about baby fetuses with clown music in the background that started with an NordVPN ad. By golly, what whiplash. This channel certainly is not that.
