Afternoon tea at the conservatory. Sunlight filtering in through the vine-crawled wide pane windows of the vaulted ceilings onto crisp linen-topped tables amongst the foliage of rare plants and blooms. Not one petal brown or torn, nor stem and leaf out of place, you notice. Unsettling flawlessness. Escorted to a table with a beautiful floral centerpiece, your name written in elegant calligraphy on the small placard laid next to fine bone china prepared just for one. (Set exactly as if it were known that you would be arriving alone. The other tables set just the same, accommodating the size of each party to astonishing precision.) Silver tiered platters laden with delicate finger sandwiches and pastel confectionery on doilies. House-made marmalade and fresh clotted cream to pair with warm, perfect scones. The tea menu when you open it, surprises you with blends you’ve never heard of. ‘Forget-Me-Not’, you read, ‘harvested at the dawn of a waning crescent moon and gently roasted in the sighs of longing regrets. The scent reminds oneself of the ghost of faint memories and long-closed doors.’ A server pushing a small trolley stops at your table to bring tea of your choosing. You are poured a cup, sugar and cream stirred in to your exact liking before you can even utter a breath. How could they have known? The steam arising from the cup suggests the tea to be scalding hot, but when you take a tentative sip, it is the perfect temperature. To sit there and sip on sweet, creamy tea— the flavor wonderfully strange and invigorating enough to bring a bright gleam to your eyes and a becoming flush to your cheeks— and listen to the conversations of the other guests trickling in. Some mundane enough, wealthy ladies gossiping and raving of the latest trends in hats. Then you hear of the most peculiar of murmurs mixed in. ‘-burying him for the third time is the charm, my dear.’ ‘Has the fifth floor returned yet?’ Oh, to leave afternoon tea warmed and pleasantly full, if not slightly altered, as if the small corners of your mind had been quietly turned.

A tailored charcoal tailcoat, on the lapels hangs a chained double gold brooch of the hotel's insignia, polished leather wingtip oxfords, white gloves, the silver chain of his watch hanging out from where it resides in his waistcoat pocket (you manage to catch a glimpse of the face and come to find out there is no time to tell at all, bewilderedly looking up to see his face watching yours, a gloved finger lifting up to his quirked lips, shh.)

The Atramentum. A lobby that is all polished walnut and rich velvet. Crystal chandeliers, richly upholstered furniture, gilded ceilings, walls lined with priceless paintings and famous artifacts that were lost to time. Replicas, they surely must be. A canary perched in a small brass cage behind the front desk, only sings in poems. No one knows why. And long halls that never seem to end. Secrets whispering behind the walls, foreign and nondescript. Familiar staircases that take you to new areas you don’t quite remember being there from the first time. Rooms that are numbered oddly (for instance, there is a Room 217 3/4, but Room 307 is nowhere to be found between Room 306 and Room 308; the elevator button to the fifth floor is gone entirely and taking the stairs will only bring you from the fourth to the sixth). Be most careful, it would be easy to lose yourself and not be found. 

The guests are just as strange. Some as normal as you and I, eager to enjoy the timeless extravagance and facilities of the fine establishment. But how bizarre it is that no one else seems to notice the skips in reality. And there are some guests that seem… inexplainable, you can’t put a finger to it— otherworldly. 

The skilled staff of The Atramentum bow their heads as you walk by, quiet and unknowable as the rest of the hotel. They offer no explanations and politely refuse to answer any questions.

One peculiar concierge stands out from the rest. Always impeccably dressed, nary a wrinkle on his person, almost unnaturally so. The enigmatic nature of his curved smile, affably mocking. Voice smooth and humming. He isn’t always concerned in maintaining the falsehoods of a serviceable personality, sometimes dipping into impertinence. Comes and goes as he pleases. In fact, you’ve never seen him leave, because the moment you glance away and look back again, he’s gone, seemingly disappeared into thin air. Sometimes, if he’s in enough of a jovial mood, he will offer an obscure comment that you cannot interpret then and there, only to become useful to you much later.

uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh *squints* i *nervously looks away* at the time, when I said his heart got broken, it wasn’t actually, like, in the romantic sense.. I formally apologize if I did mislead anyone into thinking he had a previous lover *gintama conference tears* but ne’ertheless some things have happened one after the other, and bro just hasn’t been right since, even after all these years. Character-developing trauma n suchlike…
