A newcomer to Polcarnew, Noah is strange, mysterious, and silent. Accepted into the lighthouse by Morwenna and adored by Morgen, the peace of Polcarnew seems to be the perfect escape from the things he wanted to leave behind. But Kat’s already suspicious, and it’s only a matter of time before the past catches up to him.

She made her way to the little bathroom and considered asking Jenny to join her, but then reasoned that, no, she probably should actually get clean. The shower took a while to splutter into a start, but once she was underneath the spray it was deliciously hot. She stood under it for a moment with her hands holding her hair back, just trying to realign herself.

Morwenna’s been Katell’s best friend and Polcarnew tourists’ worst enemy ever since either of them can remember. From her midnight radio show at the lighthouse, she dispenses advice to the (mostly fictional) lonely hearts of the village. Her life would be much easier if people started asking her the right questions.

Morgen met Katell and Morwenna at university, and followed his ‘name-twin’ home to the lighthouse after they graduated. He put down roots in Polcarnew quickly, and runs the local garden centre. He also drives his housemate mad by bringing unloved houseplants and strays home to nurture. With his latest stray, he may have bitten off more than he can chew.

“out in the back of my childhood home are the days we caught grasshoppers with shrieks loud enough to alert all the critters that here was a joy they could never reach and never understand   then there are the evenings when the grasshoppers had gone to bed and the crickets sang us a lullaby as we spilled out confessions of the utmost importance for they were bigger than us, than the stars, than anything   and out in the back are the mornings as well of groggy eyes crinkling at the sight of cinnamon grits on the porch as a treat before off we went to try and catch the purples and pinks of the sunrise with our butterfly nets   I think rather than walk down the path to the car out front I wish to lock my knees till my muscles twitch and root my feet into the dirt of the world of grasshoppers and lullabies and cinnamon grits until ivy and weeds grow up my spine while I remain back in those days”

Mara is back in Polcarnew after a very long absence, and everything seems to have changed while she’s been away. The friends she wanted to come home to have grown up and married and gone, and a stranger has moved into their cottage. All she has left are her skin and the sea. But things haven’t quite stopped changing yet.

Katell never expected to move home to Polcarnew, but a nasty breakup and a sick mother brought her back to the Cornish village where she grew up. Then again, she also never expected to find a naked selkie on her doorstep, but the world seems intent on destroying Kat’s expectations of peace, quiet, and being left alone.

so we are 64 (whaaaat?) pages into our first original novel, rosemary and salt: a modern folktale where selkies exist and no-one is straight. we literally do not have a single straight character. it's the best. and we are about to introduce those characters now, starting with our main!
