        ALTRUISM .  it  seldom  feels  worth  it ,  as  her  dagger  lay  bloody  and  discarded  on  the  table.   her  fighting  gear  is  half  in  tatters ,  kind  of  ripped ,  as  curls  fall  from  the  ribbon  in  a  convoluted  mess  of  brown  disarray.    ❝    then  i’m  no  hero.   the  knot  in  my  stomach ,  making  me  extremely  angry  at  myself ,  is  proof  of  it.    ❞   she’s  being.  .  .  childish ,   if  not  completely  morose ,  in  expecting  some  sort  of  gratification  from  today’s  mission.   she’s  even  being  slightly  rude,  even  if  her  voice  is  still  soft.   DEMONS    ─────    they  were  never  fond  of  making  it  easy.  clearly ,  for  someone  who  spent  an  entire  life  at  an  institute ,  lucie  has  been  spared  her  share  of   disappointment   in  battle.  

             besides ,  it  is  not  easy  being  the  daughter  of  will  and  tessa  herondale .  .  .   even  tales  of  uncle  jem  spoke  of  someone  brave ,  and  inherently  HEROIC.    yet  lucie?    ❝    i  seem  to  make  it  worse,  when  all  i  want  to  do  is  help.   ❞    in  a  selfish  way ,  she   does   want  her  name  to  be associated  with  heroism ,  with  pride.  perhaps ,  if  she  did  so ,  james  wouldn’t  suffer.   maybe .  .  .   it  would  help  him.  the  pale  blue  closes ,  as  she  lets  the  fire  warm  her  cold,  bare  hands.   she  avoids  the  lavender  gaze  that  might  see  through  her  positive ,  humorous   ─────      and  slightly  petulant ,   pretense.    ❝     but  it’s  fine .   i’m  sure  my   MELANCHOLY   will  be  cured  in  the  morning.  ❞
