"I know you wanted to help us---but I was afraid I would lose you." Hunk wouldn't say it out loud but he was glad Lotor intervened when he did. Otherwise, Keith would be dead.

He wipes the tears from Keith's eyes and smile. He did not let go of Keith for a long time. He didn't want to let him go. But eventually, his arms relaxed and finally he lets his hand drop.

"I just want to let you know that you're loved. We love and care about you."

In all honestly, Keith had been struggling in recent months. Mainly, he felt as if the team didn't need him anymore. He kept fucking up as leader, and once Shiro had been able to pilot Black again, he was without a Lion anyways.

He at least felt needed with the Blades. That was why he found himself withdrawing more and more from Team Voltron.

Eventually, he had left the team entirely to go on a long Blade of Marmora mission. It wasn't until they worked with the team to help save half a galaxy did he speak with them again.

Though, that day had gone from bad to worse when the Galra had been tipped off about their plans. Try as they might, Voltron ended up trapped on a ticking timebomb and was unable to help everyone else.

Out of desperation to save his friends and the galaxy, Keith did the unthinkable. He was prepared to sacrifice his life to save thousands more. He had been all too willing, and maybe that was concerning. Though, someone had to be willing to make a tough call. If there was one thing Keith was good at; it was his willingness to put his life on the line to save others.

He did half-expect the team to lecture him for what he'd done. Though, when Hunk hugged him instead, Keith's eyes went wide. "Hunk...?"

He went stiff in the other paladin's arms before gradually returning the hug with one of his own. His eyes suddenly burned with unshed tears. "...I'm sorry..." he murmured.

Maybe the team still needed him after all? Why else would Hunk be this upset with him?

"...I-I won't do that again," he added softly.

I dont think they ever explained what the guardian spirits aspect of the lions were. Aside from their attacks, there are obvs errors like Keith's lion being the Guardian Spirit of the Core instead of Fire and Shiro's lion being the Guardian Spirit of the Cosmos instead of Sky.
