8.24.19 "Andrew Luck" In the most shocking development of the NFL offseason, Indianapolis Colts star quarterback Andrew Luck will retire from the NFL. Luck was seen on the sidelines of the Colts' preseason game Saturday night, where he was booed by Colts fans. He then confirmed the burbling news reports during a postgame press conference. The injuries he battled throughout the past few seasons had simply taken too big a toll on his psyche, he said. "I felt stuck and the only way out of it is to no longer play football," Luck said. "It's taken my joy away from the game." #GoogleTrendsGX #visualgoogletrends #graphicdesign #trending #posteraday #dailyposter #posters #typography #eyeondesign #posterreposter #itsnicethat #visualgraphic #dailyposter #AndrewLuck #NFL #Colts

8.23.19 "Wizard of Oz" Dorothy’s ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz are among the most recognizable pieces of movie memorabilia — but for years, they had vanished. In 2005, the Judy Garland Museum in the actress’ birthplace of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, displayed the “traveling pair” of ruby slippers — one of the few pairs once worn by Garland — at its annual Wizard of Oz festival. The museum borrowed the costume pieces from Michael Shaw, a movie memorabilia collector in California. A thief smashed the glass and stole the slippers from their case one night, after breaking in through the museum’s back door. A 2016 documentary, The Slippers, noted that Shaw declined to have the slippers stored in a vault at night, worried about having too many people handling the prized pieces. But he added, “Most importantly, I was assured the museum had security.” For over a decade, the slippers remained lost. Then in 2017, the Grand Rapids Police Department got the FBI involved in the case, after a tip came forward that turned into a potential case of extortion. The FBI put its Art Crime team, FBI Laboratory, and Chicago, Miami and Atlanta offices on the case, and eventually got the slippers back from a recovery operation in Minneapolis. (People)

8.20.19 "Spider-Man" Sony Pictures is vowing to carry on the Spider-Man franchise without Marvel Studios’ involvement, placing the blame on Disney for cutting the successful inter-studio cooperation short. In a statement obtained exclusively by The Hollywood Reporter, the studio says it is “disappointed” that Marvel president Kevin Feige will no longer act as lead producer on the film franchise, squarely laying the decision at Disney’s feet. “Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise,” says a Sony spokesperson. “We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live-action Spider-Man film.” (Hollywood Reporter)

8.17.19 "UFC 241" Stipe Miocic defeated Daniel Cormier in the UFC 241 main event Saturday night to again become the heavyweight champion. For several rounds it seemed like Miocic might lose his second consecutive fight against Cormier, the defending heavyweight champ. Cormier beat him at UFC 226 in July 2018, knocking him out in the first round.
Cormier, 40, the first and only UFC fighter to defend titles in two weight classes, has hinted that Saturday's fight could be his last.
"Everybody asks about [retirement], but that's what happens when you turn 40," Cormier told CNN on Thursday. "I feel great. I wanna get through this weekend, and then I'll sit with my family, and we'll figure out what's going on. It's a real thing, though. Father time catches up to everybody."

8.16.19 "Peter Fonda" Peter Fonda, 'Easy Rider' actor and screenwriter, is dead at 79. Peter Fonda, the tall, lanky actor who became a star and a counterculture sex symbol in the film “Easy Rider,” carrying on the Hollywood dynasty begun by his father, Henry Fonda, died Friday in Los Angeles. He was 79. The death was confirmed by his family, who said the cause was respiratory failure because of lung cancer. During his acting and filmmaking career, Mr. Fonda earned two Oscar nominations, almost three decades apart. He shared, along with Dennis Hopper and Terry Southern, a best original screenplay nomination for “Easy Rider,” the story of two hippie bikers on a cross-country trip fueled by drugs and the thrill of youthful freedom. Mr. Fonda appeared never to abandon his 1960s attitudes and openness, even as he prepared for the 50th anniversary this fall of “Easy Rider,” which will include a Radio City Music Hall screening. The “about” section of his current website includes this thought: “I believe that one is only truly free when learning, and one can only learn when one is free.” (The New York Times)

8.15.19 "Why were cornflakes invented?" Kellogg's Corn Flakes were originally created in an effort to discourage American consumers from masturbating. What's True:The creation of corn flakes was part of J.H. Kellogg's broader advocacy for a plain, bland diet. Without referring to corn flakes in particular, Kellogg elsewhere recommended a plain, bland diet as one of several methods to discourage masturbation. What's False:According to the available evidence, corn flakes were primarily created as an easy-to-digest, pre-prepared and healthy breakfast food, in particular for patients at the Kellogg sanitarium in Michigan. The product was never advertised as an "anti-masturbatory morning meal." (Snopes)

8.14.19 "Ignacio Anaya Garcia" Ignacio Anaya García invented one of the world’s all-time favorite snacks pretty much by accident. Nachos, a combination of chips with melted cheese and other goodies, were originally called “Nachos especiales”––”Nacho” being a common abbreviation for Ignacio. Google is celebrating García on what would be his 124th birthday. He was born Aug. 15, 1895 in Mexico. According to Google, it was in 1943 when García, who was then working at a popular restaurant in the border town of Piedras Negras, came up with the dish when he improvised a snack for his customers. A group of wives of soldiers from the nearby Eagle Pass Army Airbase came into the Club Victoria, where García worked, asking for something to eat. The legend goes that García, who was a maître d’, was unable to find a chef, so he had to quickly put together a tasty dish himself. Google’s colorful animated GIF runs viewers through the simple yet groundbreaking recipe: García melted grated cheese over tortilla chips and jalapeño slices. (TIME)

8.13.19 "Little Women" 'Little Women' trailer introduces the March sisters to a new generation The first trailer for writer and director Greta Gerwig's "Little Women" wastes no time in identifying the four sisters at the center of her adaptation of the Louisa May Alcott classic novel. But, as the nearly three-minute trailer continues, we learn more characteristics about the quartet beyond their names. Emma Watson plays eldest sister Meg, a romantic who dreams of finding both the limelight and love. Eliza Scanlen plays the sensitive and caring Beth. Florence Pugh plays the outspoken Amy, who -- like many a youngest sibling -- was a pest as an adolescent but who eventually grew to find her voice. And then there's Saoirse Ronan's Jo. The character, an aspiring writer who doesn't believe she needs a man to succeed, has become a role model for many a headstrong woman since Alcott's story was published in the 1860s. Other talents who receive screen time include Timothée Chalamet as Laurie, Jo's childhood confidant, Laura Dern as Marmee, the girls' mother who supports their free spirit attitudes, and Meryl Streep as their scene-stealing aunt. Gerwig's "Little Women" will be released on December 25, 2019. (CNN)

8.12.19 "Whitney Cummings" Whitney Cummings is taking a public approach to dealing with internet scum and making it clear she won't be bullied. The comedian on Monday told her social media followers that there have been recent attempts to extort her over an image she accidentally and briefly posted to Instagram earlier this year in which part of her breast was visible. "In April I accidentally posted an insta story that showed nipple," she said on Twitter. "Once I realized, I deleted. The people who took screen grabs are trying to get money from me, some said they have offers to sell them, some are asking for money to not post the photo." "When a woman in the public eye is extorted, we have to spend time, money and energy dealing with it, hiring lawyers and security experts, and living with a pit in our stomach about when and how we will be humiliated," Cummings wrote on Twitter. "Y'all can have my nipple, but not my time or money anymore." (CNN Entertainment)
