Layering up for the Winter
First of all, when dressing up in layers for winters, forget the word cotton. It's no joke: Cotton gets wet and doesn't dry out--and that's a dumb way to die. Synthetic materials (polypro, nylon, etc.), Merino wool, and down should be your only choices in the winter.
Everyone knows when to wear layers, but no one really tells you why. The purpose of a layered clothing system is so you can remove items as you get warmer and ensure you don’t get wet from sweat.
Therefore, always think of clothing as a three-layer system:
Baselayer. This layer of clothing is close--tight--to your skin, and it is generally just a single layer, though some folks will double up. This layer should also be comfortable.
Insulating Layers. One or more layers of clothing designed for protection. These layers should be BREATHABLE if you move around and generate heat: Wool or fleece is ideal. Down is an excellent choice if there is little movement and no sweat. Outer garments should be easy to remove to adjust your insulation levels to whatever activity you are doing; otherwise, you'll get soaked with sweat and die.
Protective Layers. This outer layer protects you from precipitation and heat loss from wind (convection). A windproof and (truly) waterproof shell is what you're looking for here--and make sure it's tough enough to handle whatever environment you are in.
Be careful of clothing that tries to combine these layers into a single garment since that will reduce the effectiveness of the layers above and below. Mens winter coats and jackets are not something to skimp out on. Get yourself a warm winter coat like deer hunters wear. Also, you’d want yourself a down parka, either expensive, moderate, or affordable.
