A perfect insulator? That’s right. Between the tube’s two layers of borosilicate glass (wiki link), is a pocket of beautiful nothing (AKA outer space). Heat requires a medium to transfer. Without a thermal bridge, the heat absorbed by the stove collects rapidly.

How is the heat absorbed? Great question! The internal face of the tube is coated in three layers of metal: aluminum nitride, stainless steel, and copper. Placed on the inside of the vacuum (away from your food), these three layers work in unison to trap both viable light and ultraviolet, allowing one to cook in a light overcast.

What is borosilicate glass? Borosilicate glass is known for its chemical and thermal resistance, making it a go-to choice for bakeware, LED lights, and lab equipment.

How it Works

This All-Season Solar Cooker Even Works in Winter

Which types of solar cookers are all-season solar cookers? As the weather dips in the fall, we’re often asked how exactly these stoves can cook so effectively even in the cold. To answer this and other questions, we’ve created a handy FAQ.

All-season solar cooker: How do solar vacuum tubes work?

Air is pulled out of a double-layered borosilicate glass tube and permanently sealed, forming a vacuum. This highly specialized process results in some unique properties, the most important being thermal insulation. Light can be absorbed by the internal layer of the tube and stored as heat. Without air to transfer heat from the inside of the tube to the outside, the vacuum provides near perfect insulation from the cold.

Yes, very well in fact! The GoSun Sport has been shown to cook hot meals at temperatures below 10°F (-12°C) with no problem aside from the time required to preheat.

As per Today, Over 1.1 million homes have been damaged of which over 436k have been totally destroyed, and in many cases, washed away. In total 33 million people have been affected and reports suggest a third of the entire country is flooded. Around 6 million need urgent help.

Many people are living in ad hoc camps with virtually no hygiene and sanitation, very little food, and no access to medication. Official figures suggest that 1,200 people have died and 4,900 injured, but the figures are likely to be higher due to the remote nature of many villages. In finances, the damage for Pakistan is “Far Greater than $10 Billion” and it’s adding up day by day.

Pakistan has received its highest volume of rainfall since the 1960s and declared it a national emergency. It’s been widely agreed upon that the cause of this disastrous flooding is due to Summer being a monsoon season and the combination of climate change, this creates the perfect environment for another culprit to blossom which is melting glaciers and snow. Pakistan has the most glaciers over 7,200 than anywhere else outside of the poles. And in tandem with the effects of climate change such as rising temperatures, and the summer monsoon, these conditions are likely making many of these glaciers melt faster and earlier which adds significant volumes of water to streams converted into heavy rainfall. This creates an unfortunate reality for Pakistan since this makes them the most vulnerable and most affected by climate change effects such as flooding and heatwaves while only contributing a tiny fraction of the global greenhouse emissions of less than 0.06%. Compared to China (32%), the United States (12%), and India (7%).

GoSun's Fridges Are Better Because They Have Almost Zero Toxic Chemicals

The chemicals used in our standard refrigerators and freezers are environmentally destructive in ways that few people ever consider. The tragedy is that no matter how diligently millions of environmentally conscious people recycle and watch their daily carbon output, they unknowingly cause just as much long-term damage to the climate with their fridges.

Why does this matter so much? Here's an overview of why these chemicals are so dangerous, and why millions need to find a better way to cool and freeze their food.

The Danger of Refrigerants

Since the 1990s, the most common refrigerant used in MVAC systems has been hydrofluorocarbon (HFC)-134a. These replaced the notorious chlorofluorocarbons, which were blamed for punching holes in the ozone layer.

HFCs are, unfortunately, little better. As the EPA explains, they are intentionally-made fluorinated greenhouse gases used in the same applications where ozone-depleting substances have been used, which includes air conditioning systems for cars.

Like the ozone-depleting substances they replace, most HFCs are potent greenhouse gases with very high GWPs. To give you an idea of their danger, CP-12 is an ozone depleting refrigerant with a GWP of 10,900

Here's the danger this gas poses. It harms the ozone layer, which would allow higher levels of UVB to reach the Earth's surface. This causes all sorts of deadly heath problems for humans, including   cataracts, skin cancer, and weakened immune systems

The Danger of Blowing Agents

The most common foam-blowing agents currently used in America are R134a and R245fa. These contain HFCs and an incredibly high amount of CO2 . Despite them being industry standards in the United States, these insulations have a dangerously high global warming potential.

According to GE, they are as high as 1300 and 950, respectively, which is an order of 100 times higher than modern insulations. Unfortunately,  the cost of retrofitting existing production facilities prevents its spread, and the lack of U.S. regulations means that HFC aren't restricted.  

Cleary this can't go on forever.

The Danger of Disposing of a Hydrocarbon-Blown Fridge

Environmental protection agencies around the world have designated traditional fridges as begin so bad that they are essentially hazardous waste. The UK Environment Agency has advised that all waste refrigerator insulation foam produced using a hydrocarbon blowing agent should be considered highly flammable classified as hazardous waste.

Tests that were carried out on 20 refrigerators containing insulation blown using cyclopentane, i-pentane, n-pentane or mixtures of these gases found the following:

"All tested foam samples should be considered 'highly flammable' under European Test Method A10 Flammability (Solids) and concludes that all fridge insulation foam produced using a hydrocarbon blowing agent should be classified as hazardous waste, unless tested and demonstrated otherwise."

Even though modern fridges contain insulating foam blown with hydrocarbon blowing agents that replaced the ozone-depleting CFCs, HCFCs and HFCs, troubles still abound. They pose a greater fire risk due to their high flammability.

To sum it up, the type of fridge you use matters.

Off-Grid Living with Ultra-Runner Patrick Sweeney

GoSun Ambassador Patrick Sweeney has become a household name in the ultra-running community. The headline of Sweeney’s running blog reads, “Vicarist for Hire.” (A vicarist, being one who devotes their life to maximizing others' vicarious enjoyment.), and the ultra-runner does just that, making a living having fun so that others can go along for the ride.

Traveling the majority of the year in his tiny, off-grid trailer, dubbed the “Patcave.” (complete with its own Instagram profile), Patrick has perfected a lifestyle that's uniquely his own, choosing quality over quantity.

"I love to cook and I love to be self-reliant. I also can't afford to eat at restaurants. Living on the road in the Patcave, the GoSun stove allows me cook great food anywhere the Sun shines."

In 2015, Sweeney made international headlines while running across the United States from L.A. to the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Pat began running a marathon each day (26.2 miles), but quickly ramped up the distance to around 50 miles each day feeling he could run 40 miles a day “indefinitely.” The motive for this transcontinental trek was to raise money for the 100 Mile Club, an organization dedicated to fighting childhood obesity, a cause Sweeney has championed throughout his career.

Patrick Sweeney has been running ultras for nine years. During college, he began running marathons, just to see if he could do it. Later on, Pat approached running in a different way, running barefoot on the sands of Manhattan Beach, California, where he was born and raised.

After running a few marathons in conventional running shoes while still training barefoot on the beach, Sweeney realized that barefoot running was the way to go. While pacing a friend in the Badwater 135, Pat experimented with running in huarache sandals made by Luna, which were inspired by the Tarahumara, a Native American tribe in northern Mexico known for their long-distance running. Pat ran 40 miles in those sandals at the Badwater 135 and has since made running the central theme of his minimalist lifestyle.

I eat a vegan diet and I like to know everything that goes into my food. I mostly cook root vegetables supplemented with leafy greens and whatever I can forage.

I eat real food more than anything; mostly pinole, tortillas, avocados and bread. I usually drink more beer than water.

So you’re the founder of the International Beer Mile Association, you host the Beer Mile at the Born to Run Ultra every year, and you recently held the inaugural Sky Drinking event in Leadville. What is the allure with the Beer Mile?

The beer mile is all about shared misery, stupidity and good times. Over the years I have helped raise thousands of dollars for various charities. Plus I am good it.
