"Like I said earlier, you deserve all this and more." She told him, tone firm but with a smile on her face. The smile soon turned sheepish as she rubbed the back of her head. "But we should probably leave you to get settled in, huh? Sorry. I've been told I can be a bit much."
Mae rolled their eyes. "Let's get you out of here before you start rambling at the kid again, hm?" They then looked at Key closely again. Something was definitely off with the kid and they'd be keeping an eye on him, but... "Left a list o' numbers on the counter for ya. There's a free clinic or two 'round that don't ask no questions. Spar works at the mechanics next door in the mornin's if y'need anythin'. I'm... around."
"Now who's rambling?" Sparrow laughed, tugging on the back of Mae's jacket and leading them to the door. "I hope you settle in okay!"
"Hey, kid?" Sparrow called into the alleyway she'd been directed to by her.. contact. She was fairly certain it was the right place. She'd come equipped with a large bag full of warm and fluffy blankets, along with a large tub of warm chicken curry and rice.
"It's, uh, the reporter lady you were speaking to!" Sparrow called out, suddenly realising she'd never actually introduced herself.

"We should probably leave the kid to get settled in." Mae told Sparrow gently when they spotted her begin mentally mapping the apartment for furniture and anything else. They'd already put some ready meals in the fridge for the kid, along with the curry he knew Sparrow had made.
Once again, the sheepish look crossed Sparrow's face. She turned back to Key, holding the keys to the apartment out for him. "This is the only set of keys." She assured him. "If you want extra assurance, there's a locksmith down the road who can change them. I'll give you a heads up when we've got the furniture situation sorted and I'll try do all the electrical stuff the same day so that we don't have to intrude too much. As for clothes... If you ever want to go shopping, just shoot me a text!"
Mae raised a brow at that. "Or me, if you don't want to be there for hours."

Sparrow's eyes widened slightly at how bright his smile was, before sending him her own in return. Somewhere to the side, Mae raised his hand to shield his eyes.
"I'm so glad you like it! And you deserve this much and more." Sparrow told him seriously.

Mae eyed the cat as he followed it over to the dark spot. It was far too intelligent to be normal, in their opinion. Perhaps his earlier joke about Sparrow adopting another eldritch kid hadn't been too far off the mark after all. He'd keep an eye on it.
Sparrow had continued to ramble, finally coming to a stop infront of Key and rocking back and forth on the balls of her feet rather nervously as she fiddled with her bracelets. "So... Do you like it? Is it okay? I'll find some furniture for you soon - I hope you don't mind second hand stuff, I'll ensure it's good and clean - maybe some clothes too? I hope you don't mind, I just didn't see many in your crate - do you have any colour preferences-"
"Birdy." Mae spoke up sharply, watching the two as they set the crate down. "Quit it. You're gonna overwhelm the kid."
Sparrow cut herself off immediately, giving Key a sheepish smile. "Ah. Sorry. I got a bit carried away again... Just- Is it okay?"

"One day, you will like me." Sparrow promised the cat before beginning to lead them to the stairs. The apartment the two had found was on the second floor and had direct access to the fire-escape on the side of the building. It looked like an old studio apartment, and far more intact than one would expect from an abandoned apartment.
"Most of the furniture was removed when this place stopped being used and there haven't been many maintenance checks." Sparrow explained as she darted around the apartment, doing her own little checks. "But we can sort some stuff for you and I can check out the electrics and the kitchen."
"She gets bored easily." Mae explained as they watched her run around. "She got into fixing things a few years back. Works part time at the mechanics next door. Where do you want your crate?"

Mae stuck their tongue out at the cat before realising that they were getting into it with.. a cat. They sighed and let the shop door shut behind them, casually moving away from it so that Key could access it if he wanted to.
After about five minutes, Sparrow returned to the two with a pair of keys in hand. "-no, thank *you* Mrs Dove! We really should have that tea soon. Have a good afternoon!"
She turned her attention back to the two, quirking an eyebrow at the silence between them. "Well, I have the keys. Ready to go up?"

"Mrs Dove!" Sparrow pushed open the door to the shop with a charming smile as she greeted the old woman behind the counter. Mae sighed at the enthusiasm, but held the door open for Key as Sparrow launched into conversation.
"How are your children? Is Lizzy still liking university? Math at Gotham U- She must be such a hard worker." Sparrow spoke circles around the lady, who answered with equal enthusiasm.
"I'm convinced her parents knew she was going to be a social butterfly when they named her." Mae murmured, running a hand through their hair. They then looked to Key. "She will, however, keep the attention off of you. Which... I get the sense is preferred."

Mae looked down at the cat with a grimace, where Sparrow glanced at the fluffball with a determined face. "One day," she vowed. "I will get to pet that cat without my face being torn off."
It was now her personal goal.
They slowed down to ensure Key didn't trip over the cat, Sparrow rambling on about the little old lady who ran the pawnbroker's. Mae nodded attentively to each fact, chiming in once and a while. Apparently, the lady had a few grandkids going to Gotham Uni at the moment and made killer brownies. She was a cat lady to the highest level and had a keen interest in snowglobes - having around two hundred in her collection.

Mae made a mental note to keep an eye on the kid - Sparrow always looked for the good in people after all and was, arguably, a little desensitised to the bad at times as well. Honestly, considering her method of info gathering for her articles, it was a miracle she'd lived this long.
Sparrow ignored the look on Mae's face - she'd handle that later. Right now, her priority was getting Key to a safe space. She was beyond glad he'd taken the medicine, but it wasn't an immediate fix and he still looked rather peaky. She'd feel a bit more reassured once he was nestled in blankets and eating something that was kept down.
"Ah!" She spotted the sign for the pawnbroker's in the distance. "There it is!"

That made something shift in Mae, who looked around Sparrow to observe Key again. Their gaze was once more calculating, watching the kid carefully. That had been said with a lot of certainty - even for a kid. Perhaps there was something else-
Their thoughts were cut off by an elbow hitting their ribs. "Stop trying to size up the kid." Sparrow ordered flatly. "I'll put you on your ass."
"We both know you can't do that."
"Back in November, I had to get you back to your safehouse somehow, didn't I?" Sparrow mentioned vaguely. Mae went quiet, squinting at her before huffing.
"Fine, I'll quit it."

"He's judging me." Mae complained. "This is unfair. How am I being judged more?"
"Because you deserve it." Sparrow responded without missing a beat as they turned the corner. Honestly, she was finding this amazing. The kid was hilarious and it was always fun to bully Mae a bit.
Mae sighed heavily. "I'm being bullied." They lamented. "Bullied by my ex-girlfriend and the kid I'm helping move. World, how cruel can thou be?"
"How does anyone take you seriously?" Sparrow wondered aloud before glancing to Key. "Do they seem dangerous to you?"

"They look like a dork." Sparrow agreed solemnly, expertly ignoring Mae's indignant sqawk.
"I do not!" They rebuked, mock-glaring at the two of them.
Sparrow continued on like she hadn't heard anything. "They absolutely refuse to drop the whole blue theme. The vigilante title is debatable at best - I've seen the police files. They have no idea what to make of them."
"It is not- you've seen the police files?" Mae turned to Sparrow, an eyebrow raised. "How?"
"I'm a good reporter."
