The exploits of the Deputy Attorney General
12 April 1891
The Deputy Attorney General has launched a campaign that feeds residents of the Straits Settlements with a mixture of opium and rice. This has caused most British officials, soldiers and other residents of the Straits Settlements to become hooked on opium. The British have intervened and taken over the Government of the Straits Settlements to clean up the issue. The dAG has been sacked and thats the end of that

The Liberation of Georgetown
28 March 1891
With the help of a few ships and troops from the British Raj, coordinated by the British Colonial Office, Georgetown has been liberated by the British and is now firmly in the hands of the Straits Settlements. However, what is not firmly there anymore is John H Allan, who seems to have developed a case of strong schizophrenia and blindness. He was found in a hospital toilet furiously stroking his johnson and screaming "HUEYYYYYYYY". The Governor is, therefore, recommended to relook at his appointment to ensure that the administration of Malacca is not compromised.
As for the Secret Societies in Georgetown, the Ghee Hin and the Toa Pek Kong have been neutralised in Georgetown, but still remain at large in Malacca.

Fall of Malacca Port
18 January 1891
The Port of Malacca is now the second district to fall into the hands of the Ghee Hin. These new flags have been raised high on the ports of the overwhelmed and vastly outnumbered British troops who lost their morale and escaped quickly. With that, the main economic artery of Malacca was severed just like Georgetown. Where is the Government?

Review of Strawberry Shortcake Mahjong Club: 10/10
"Yesterday, I happened to chance upon a beautiful little building in the suburbs, the one and only Strawberry Shortcake Mahjong Club, and it was the best experience of my life. Who knew that besides playing games, I could also enjoy a physical experience with beautiful young ladies for a price, surprising me greatly." Mr Cheng (not his real name)
It seems that this new Mahjong club is a major success and has obviously been green lit by the government. Could our government be changing their regulations for the private sector and allowing its people certain new freedoms

The fall of Georgetown Port
21 November 1890
Georgetown Port has fallen to the hands of the Ghee Hin. They have raised their flag high on the ports as the overwhelmed British troops have fled to the ocean fearing their lives. With that, the main economic artery of Penang has been severed and the blood is on RC Francis. From now, the Ghee Hin would intercept any cargo to that region and would use it to profit

Attorney General's action on Opium
9 November 1890
The Attorney General has released a sweeping package of reforms to tackle the growing opium reliance among troops, ranging from prohibition of service personnel from consuming drugs and mandatory drug tests. While the Police Commissioner has been supportive of the measure, the average police officer has not been satisfied with the measure.
"I cant believe that a coolie has more rights than me"
Anonymous police officer
These new changes have resulted in the resignation of Coy 4 platoon 5 (who frequent opium dens for their nights out), but it may have prevented more soldiers from becoming like Coy 4 platoon 4 of Singapore Division. Speaking of which, they are well on their way to recuperation and would eventually come back to service soon.

The British and Opium
28 October 1890
Here are a few fun facts about opium in the Straits Settlements:
The British has been the sole legal provider of Opium in Singapore since at least 1825. The 1830 Opium Regulation Act has also outlined the way in which the Government operates and collects taxes for opium
Opium accounts for about 40% of the Straits Settlements revenue since Penang and Singapore are free ports
British soldiers in Singapore are getting increasingly high on it. Right now, the entirety of Platoon 4 of Company 4 in the Singapore division have been reduced to opium zombies, owing to an over-eventful nights out

The Straits Daily: Soldiers… on drugs?
8 May 1890
In recent weeks, an increasing number of soldiers have been seen going into brothels and coming out smelling suspiciously like opium. This epidemic has been primarily concentrated in Southern Singapore, where Opium dens are being operated by the Government.
While opium has been known to be used by just coolies, it seems like its addictive powers has been spreading further and further, with some areas having only one soldier to patrol instead of the usual two or three. This meant that patrollers are sometimes unable to actually enforce the law, instead turning a blind eye to situations encountered as they simply do not have the manpower to stop the people from doing what they want.
“What kind of military is one that does not do anything? What are we paying them for then? Just last week, I saw a soldier in uniform going into an opium den! Does our government know how to control them?” commented by a street seller who chose to remain unidentified.
Opium addiction is extremely difficult to get off and the withdrawal symptoms would surely hit hard. Our government must do something quickly to prevent the widespread use of opium before they lose all their soldiers and faith from the masses. It also results in an increase in the anti-social behaviour that the police forces would need to respond to.

Riots situation in Penang and Malacca
8 May 1890
What once started as a simple racial riot has turned into a battle between the Government and the Secret Societies. The Toa Pek Kong in Penang has intensified attacks around George Town and Sungei Pinning while the Ghee Hin in Malacca has started attacks in Tanjong Kling, Klebang Besar and, more crucially, Malacca Town. This development has started spooking traders, who have avoided those 2 ports in favour of Singapore's Keppel Harbour, which remains conflict-free.
This has drawn the attention of the British Colonial Office, who are eagerly awaiting the Government’s response to the developing situation and a framework for the implementation of the Secret Societies Ordinance to prevent further attacks by Secret Societies.

Pickering: ISA good, ISA clean
30 March 1890
Thanks to the ISA established by Pickering with the help of Allan, anyone who isn't white are unable to move in or move out of states, with all 40 of the Malaccan troops deployed to defend the border. Amount of opium coming into the Straits settlement has decreased significantly, angering runners of opium dens in Singapore and also putting pressure on opium dens of British government

Congratulations on your marriage, Robinson!
21 March 1890
On his trip to Burma, the deputy attorney general found and married a person of questionable gender and looks instantly. His wedding was also attended by individuals of questionable character and looks. Is this a case of love at first sight, or is this a rebound from his captured ex-wife?

Secret societies: Are we a joke to you?
Peninsular Times Special: British Judge found dead at home! Secret Society thugs to blame?
21 March 1890
Tragedy takes hold of the streets of Penang, as a local British judge has been found dead by the police in his home in George Town.
Yesterday evening, a local British Judge was found dead in his home by his neighbours after they heard a commotion and struggled followed by the sound of something breaking. Currently, the police has yet to reveal any information regarding the details of this case, but thus far rumour has it that this was likely a killing by the secret societies to make an example of those who go after them. As this judge was involved in the recent high profile hostage case.
Thus far, while it remains to be seen as to how the local and colonial government will act, citizens hope for a restoration of peace and order amidst these suddenly tumultuous times.

Hostage Situation
18 Feb 1890
Yesterday, a threatening letter was sent to Robinson, bearing heavy news and an evil parcel; the ring finger of the leader’s wife. The letter detailed the capture of the leader’s wife, conducted by Ghee Hinn as an act to show their dissent towards the government and their hatred for their alleged incompetence.
Excerpt from letter: “We have been patient for too long. Your useless actions are harming all our people, and we needed to take drastic measures. If you do not listen to all our demands, we will send one finger of hers a week, cutting off piece by piece until you listen or until she perishes. Take heed of our warning.”
Robinson was in hysterics, panicking and imploring his fellow colleagues to adhere to Ghee Hinn’s demands, but many are unwilling to bend a knee to a terrorist group. It is up to the government to decide how to respond to the situation, and we can only hope it will be for the benefit of the country and the poor victim as well.

TURMOIL AND CHAOS IN PENANG
1st January, 1890
In recent times, the state of Penang has been seeing an increasing trend in criminal activities, with many illegal opium dens spotted in the region and robbery cases climbing sky high. In the last fortnight, Penang has seen two separate race riots, with Chinese and Malays rising up to fight against each other.
At this stage, it seems highly unlikely for different races to coexist peacefully, where their current relationship is so raw and tense that a single action can spark a riot. At times like this, the peaceful citizens of Penang question what the government has been doing, inadvertently finding them to be incompetent and unable to establish the peace and security that they had promised so sweetly in their speeches in Parliament.
“What good are our leaders if they cannot ensure that we live peacefully? My family cannot sleep at night, and we are all so, so, terrified that something will happen to us any moment,” Mr Tan (not his real name) commented.
To resolve this pressing issue, it is crucial that the state leaders resolve the tensions and ensure that the citizens are able to live safely and peacefully, and should this not be done, it seems highly likely that Penang will spiral into a cycle of turmoil and suffering.
