Planning to participate in this year's community read program, Glenview Reads Together, featuring the John Lewis graphic memoir March: Book One? The program kicks off on September 12th with an event featuring the award-winning illustrator Nate Powell. Pick up your copy of the book at the Reader Services desk, or reserve a copy for pick up at the drive-up window. Print and digital versions are available. As part of their sponsorship of the program, the Foundation has donated 100 signed (by the illustrator) copies of the book to give out for free to library patrons. There are still some copies left - ask about them at Reader Services.

The Poles Are In: Tent Week a Success
One of several initiatives supported by a grant from the GPL Foundation this summer, the Library’s pop-up programs under the big tent were a huge hit with patrons and staff alike. From June 13-19, Tent Week featured various programs for all ages, including Still Life Drawing, Tai Chi, Zentangle, Washi Tape Flowerpots, Rock Painting, and a concert with a local musician Thomas Comerford.
The Foundation was pleased to help the Library safely welcome patrons back to in-person programs after more than a year without any. Visit glenviewpl.org/gplfoundation for more information.

Foundation Awards Its First Grants
The Glenview Public Library Foundation, formed to grow community engagement, ensure access and inclusion, and create opportunities for individual growth, is proud to announce its first set of grants.
The grants support programming developed by Library staff outside the scope of the current budget.
• 33-1/3 Series ($1,000) creates programs with authors whose books focus on an album contained in the Library’s new vinyl LP collection.
• Pop-Up Summer Programs ($6,000) allows the Library to create outdoor programming; just in time for good weather and the ability to resume safe, in-person activities.
• Summer Reading Program (up to $3,300) provides communication support to re-energize participation in the Library’s long-standing Summer Reading Program.
The Foundation also approved an investment of $7,000 to expand Glenview Reads Together, an annual community-wide reading program. The gift supports book discussions, activities, and lectures during the month-long event.

Building a Foundation for Success
Starting something new is never easy, especially during a pandemic. The twelve members of the newly-formed Glenview Public Library Foundation (GPLF) Board jumped into planning in January 2020 by learning about the resources and operations of the Library, and establishing the goals and structure needed to support communications, fundraising, and strategy. COVID-19 unfortunately stalled the team’s momentum—including events in support of the Library’s 90th anniversary. But, once everyone settled into working via Zoom, the Board used this year to research best practices among library foundations, create a logo and website, develop the mission statement, establish a process for awarding grants to the Glenview Library, and identify opportunities for communications and fundraising.
The Foundation’s mission, which aligns with the Library’s strategic plan, is focused on growing community engagement, ensuring access and inclusion, and creating opportunities for individual growth. GPLF seeks to inspire philanthropic support from the Glenview community to invest in programs and resources that advance the Library’s strategic objectives and enable funding of ideas outside the established budget.
During the fall and winter, representatives from the Foundation and Library developed an application and review process to identify and award grants for project ideas generated from Library staff. The Foundation Board recently initiated this process and plans to award its first grants later this spring. Please visit our website at glenviewpl.org/GPLFoundation for updates, information, and ways to get involved.
