Plato spoke of goodness, truth, beauty and unity as the four ideals. Today beauty is much loved for its ability to inspire us.
Beautiful models adorn the fashion magazines. They entice us to buy some perfume or cream, which their beauty supports.
Beautiful cars, watches, clothing even golf clubs are made to be desirable. Simply by possessing them implies that we too possess the qualities they exude.
Fifty years ago the clothes airer was made of wood. It was an ungainly item, which stood stubbornly in the middle of a room. Laden with wet clothes it soon filled the room with damp. In dark cold winter days it was the only way families could be supplied with dry clothes. The spin dryer did not exist; far less the energy hungry tumble dryer of today.
Clothes were often draped around the fire on any contraption available. Accidents were common. Then the pulley airer came along - hanging from the ceiling in cramp kitchens. The kitchen was impassable during laundry day. The clothes smelled of food, the process was slow.
Warm sunny or windy days were favoured Laundry could have 'a good blow'. Everyone knows that clothes dried naturally smelled fresh as the weather!
Gradually the clothes airer evolved but remained largely wooden, overbearing and hardly a beauty. Today modern materials have changed all that. A new airer is available in wall mounted versions with arms that hold parallel pullout rods. It can be completely retracted when not in use.
Quality airers are made in recyclable wipe clean polycarbonate or non-rust aluminium in modern designs. Slick and streamlined they add style to clothes drying.
The duck of old has turned into a carbon free - energy free - eco - friendly swan.
It's your carbon footprint - install an airer, better still install an energy free natural drying system, you won't regret it!
