Quick lil 8x10” repainting of an old lithograph from about a year ago. 💙 I was trying to create an image that was more playful and wasn’t so visually heavy during a time that I felt like I was drowning. In critique for this piece I saw an ex-friend smirk when I mentioned how important it is to remember to take care of yourself in times of grief and for a while that really made me feel invalidated and kept me from doing anything more with this design. But it’s back, because I think it’s still important. Still in a love affair with blue ink, considering making prints or tote bags. Would anyone be interested? TW: Death/Grief: I will admit that yesterday was very very hard for me - I graduated on Mother’s day. This time last year, I was in Colorado at the hospital trying to accept that my mom was going to die after almost losing her earlier that week. We had to have the realest talk I’ll probably ever have with anyone ever - including that I never wanted to see her dead - and that she probably had around 6 months of life left. I stayed with her for awhile and went back to Oakland thinking I’d see her again...trying to figure out how to get her to the beach one last time. Less than a month after Mother’s Day, about 4 hours before I was supposed to get on a plane, her hospice called me that she was gone. In a way I always thought she did that on purpose- as a courtesy to me or something. When she was pregnant, my Mom was given the ultimatum of “abortion or lose your job” when she got together with my dad, her coworker, a known womanizer of her graphic design firm- because a baby from him “wouldn’t amount to anything”. My Mom had me at 40 years old when in the 90’s, giving birth to a healthy baby at that age was a goddamn miracle. My Mom raised me - single handedly - just me and her - through 9/11 days in New York - through assault - through nearly living in homeless shelters - through all the bullshit she had to deal with being an older artist in this yung world. It was her strength, wit and sense of humor that helped us survive and got me here, but it was also what added such a toll on her life. She gave up so much for me, that she really kind of gave up her own life. I know she was immensly proud of me- and okay with leaving this world because of where I am in life. I am positive she was looking over me beaming with pride and probably tears. She had a great big smile and I’m trying to think on that a lot these days. I’m definitetly feeling like a glass house right now, but I’m very positive she is calling me “honey” and telling me its ok. These works will be up for the remainder of the month at SFAI and are also viewable at Gracie-CT.com. Endlessly grateful for support from those who can and can’t relate. A couple days ago marked 11 months since I lost my mom really suddenly to cancer and I’m thinking a lot about that these days.
