Reflections
String Branding: The journey of creating the string branding and creating the string packaging was very fulfilling and interesting. I didn’t realise how much satisfaction I would get over making a packaging design and making that design a reality. I was really happy about this project and would definitely want to do something like this in the future or even on my own. Through this project I came to a conclusion that I would like to work in branding, packaging and collateral (posters, stickers, merchandise etc.). If I had more time with this project I would want to refine my poster adverts more and print them as well. I think I would also want to experiment with different printing technique with them such and screen printing and the risograph.
Portfolio: Making my portfolio was interesting but I think that the most informational part of this process was the research. I really enjoyed watch YouTube videos and reading articles about design portfolios and I think that I have a lot more to learn. I think that during the summer I want to develop my design portfolio further and make more project in design areas that I am interested in before I start applying for internships.
Overall: I think that these projects were a great way to end of the second year of design studio. I want to thank Paul, Becky, David and Aakifa for being great tutors for this class I really appreciate the help and insight I got from all of them and hope to stay in touch with with all of them as I move forward in my design journey.

Informational Pages
Cover Page: For the cover page I wanted to keep it interesting but simple so I just added the visual aspects that I made along with a halftone pattern to match my portrait.
Introduction Page: In my introduction page, a lot of the writing is introducing my personality and interests. I also added some of the visual assets I made around my portrait.
CV Page: For my cv page I put all of the basic information onto the page but after that it looked a bit boring so I added icons to the contacts and fun shapes to the titles in the cv.

Portfolio Project Layout
I put all my projects into a simple design system layout. I used colours in this section but not any of the visual assets because I felt like it was too distracting and overwhelming with the projects on the pages as well. I kept the descriptions on the right bottom side of the page to keep it consistent.

Portfolio Asset Inspiration
I wanted to take some colour palette and visual inspiration from one of my favourite cartoons: bee and puppycat. I think that the show’s aesthetic is super cute and fun and I identify a lot with this show. I did some messy doodles as assets because I wanted to incorporate my personality into the design system without making too many unnecessary decorative assets.

Portrait Editing
I edited a portrait of myself in photoshop to add more personality than just having a normal photo of myself in the portfolio. I decided to make it pink because it is one of my favourite colours. Overall, I think that this is a cute and interesting way to have a photo of myself in my portfolio.

Portfolio Project Description
Festi String Branding String doesn’t have to be boring! Why not elevate your fashion sense with it? Festi String is a multi-purpose string accessory brand that is targeted towards fashion-forward individuals that attend events such as festivals, concerts and raves or individuals that want to spice up their everyday style. It can be used to jazz up any outfit and express your individual style. There are limitless ways to wear it: braided into your hair, as jewellery, to lace up your shoes, as a belt, or to secure keys or a wallet. It currently comes in three different styles, tie dye, glitter, and glow in the dark.
Festi String Packaging Festi String’s compact, portable and sturdy packaging makes it easy to carry it to concerts and events, making on the go style a reality! It’s unique shape and bright colours it will surely turn heads and with its reusable sticker seal, you can rep the Festi String brand wherever you are.
Festi String Design Process During this design process I was fortunate enough to collaborate with a group of my peers to come up with the concept. The core ideas that we wanted to communicate were: fun, playful, individuality and customizability. I think that we achieved this with the wacky mascots and bright colour palette. To develop our initial idea further, I grunged up the mascots and took the brand identity more into an alternative style. The newly found roughness of these mascots really shows how hard they party while also adding some spunk and flare to the brand identity.
WOAP Wellington On A Plate aka WOAP is an annual culture and food festival that takes pace in the Wellington region. Hundreds of restaurants and food businesses participate and showcase what the city has to offer.
Nunito Type Specimen Nunito is a balanced sans serif typeface super family, with two versions: The project began with Nunito, created by Vernon Adams in 2011 as a rounded sans serif for display typography. In 2017, Jacques Le Bailly extended it adding seven more weights, italics, and an accompanying regular non-rounded terminal version, Nunito Sans.
BLAD – Creative Archive, Aotearoa Design Directory This Book Layout and Design (BLAD) project is a collection of some of Aotearoa’s top design firms and companies. It showcases work and information that would be relevant to young designers that want to get a feel of the industry.
Illustration Design As an illustratior, I like to incorporate drawing and illustration into my design process as much as possible. When drawing for graphic design, I am aware of the constraints that come with printing and web scaling, so I like to draw with the intention of communication.
Illustration Commisions In my spare time I like to draw digitally as a creative outlet. Through this, I have also gotten a few commissions and have thoroughly enjoyed working alongside clients.

Looking at different Typefaces
I looked at a few different typefaces and their weights and decided that Tuna was the one I liked the best. I also really liked the name of the typeface as it is a fun and silly name that I think matches my vibe and personality. The Tuna typeface also comes in a lot of weights so it is very versatile.

Introduction
Hello! Kia Ora! 你好!  こんにちわ! My name is Alyssa!
I am a Chinese Malaysian born in Kuala Lumpur. I have lived in Wellington for most of my life and have recently moved up to Auckland to pursue my studies in graphic design and languages.
Growing up in these two very different cultures has made me curious and eager to learn about things that are unfamiliar to me. Whether it be food, festivities, or customs, I always approach things with an open mind!
These two different cultures are part of who I am, so I like to show it in my design practice as well. Taking influences of Asian culture as well as my design knowledge from what I have learned in Western Education, I can create informed designs that come from a unique perspective.
I have a passion for illustration, and I try to include this in my graphic design process wherever possible. I do freelance illustration commissions, and I really enjoy interacting with clients and seeing how happy they are with my work. My favourite projects have been ones that involve branding, designing merchandise, advertising, and posters. Animation and 3D imagery are some fields that I am eager to develop my graphic design practice towards.

Final Printed Booklet and Physical Hand in
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I printed, cut and binded the brand guide booklet. It went quite smoothly. I also used my stickers to decorate the booklet cover and protective box for my physical hand in which definitely ups the attention to detail a lot in my opinion. Overall, I am so happy with how this project turned out. It was so satisfying to make something like this.

Sticker Advert Mock ups
To create these mock ups I went around the Auckland CBD to take photos of places that I imagine my stickers could be. I saw stickers and flyers on electrical boxes, old building walls, signs and even street poles. It was an interesting to see all these concepts insitu as I think that it creates a kind of community artwork in a public space.

Poster Mock up
I would like the posters to be displayed in places similar to the street where the Auckland City Library is. This is because it is a high traffic area where people skate and walk through. These posters are a more traditional approach to advertising a product but I still think that a well designed poster is still quite effective for a Gen Z and Millennial target audience.

Taking Mock up Photos
I went for a walk around the city to take some photos for my advertising mock ups. I took photos of places that I could imagine my design being insitu. I am thinking of editing my own mock ups so that it would be realistic to Auckland.

Final Poster Adverts
After getting some feedback from Catherine and Ren, these are the final outcomes of my poster series adverts. I made these posters to be placed in places where my target audience would be around the most.
