Rationale
(also, just in case the system didn’t come process this properly, I was approved an extension till the 16th of June!)
Yoooooooooo this is crazy, 78 posts later and we finally made it. I’ve reached a point where I legitimately have no more energy left in my soul and bones to carry this project any further. But in saying that, I am so so SO happy and chuffed with how far I’ve come and how the the final animation turned out. I’ve done a lot of projects at uni and at work but honestly, I don’t think any of those could top the challenge of this Materials and Media project. To learn this entirely new Adobe program in half a semester and execute a typographic video to a high standard was a demanding ask. From the beginning of all of this to now, I have learnt a ton of new skills and have gained technical abilities I didn’t know were possible to gain. The amount of Youtube and Canvas tutorials I watched and rewatched is insane. It was so difficult for me to grasp the program and to wrap my head around the possibilites of animation, let alone executing those ideas. I had to say, I was really frustrated with myself in the early stages of the project. I felt like I was producing crappy work and I was out of my comfort zone for this entire journey. But I guess, you learn by doing and failing and getting up and failing again. Man, did I make so many mistakes but they only led to a more polished outcome. With the COVID situation and the theft in the last few weeks, it was definitely hard to find my footing again so I think that’s where the project paused for a while. Then I found the time and energy to apply everything I’ve learnt and push for that final stretch. I enjoyed how many different aspects there are to animation - from composition to transitions to audio decisions. I had never considered those facets before but now I have a stronger appreciation for them. Thank you to my peers and the teachers for all your support and and advice - I needed every ounce of that. I’m excited to use After Effects for future client and personal projects and I hope you’ve enjoyed this wild rollercoaster of a project - the hardest one to date but the one that has reaped the most rewards for me as a designer.
Now I’ll shut up and post the final animation :). Enjoy.

Audio and sound effects
Now that the refining part is done, I want to add sound effects and music!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
^I’m using freesound for the sound effects.
Initially I was looking for sad cinematic music but that’s not really the right tone. I realised that using the keywords ‘dramatic music’ was gonna get me the good stuff.

Tumblr media
^loving this interesting composition.

^so carefully crafted and designed. Good pacing. Good choice of music.
“trends are going backwards”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
^I really wanted this particular part of the animation to be more visually represented and I did so using the fullstops from the previous ‘uh...’

^using this as inspo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
^prolonging the amount of time “break glass ceilings” stays on screen so that viewers can absorb it better.

^added a very subtle dust feature for extra texture.

^centred this piece of text.

Would need further refinements to make the type for imapctful and interesting, but this is the version so far out of 10 experiments :)) (oops I gotta mute the end clip hehe so it doesn’t double up).

^a lot of good inspo for transitions...

“No woman could get elected”
Tumblr media
^I want this entire phrase to flip into the word elected because when you elect someone, you can completely turn the tables of the political environment (or whatever context the words are in).

Approach for the entire animation
I can’t remember if I said this before, but I plan on only using characters and glyphs in this animation. Not only will it truly hero typography, but it will also hero Helen Clark’s words since there is already so much weight and importance in her message. I feel like, in this specific case, the use of illustrations or even icons will be distracting and unecessary. This also presents a good opportunity for creative solutions - creativity within boundaries :))
Tumblr media
^for the “my goodness...” bit. Scaled up quotation marks will form the basis of this sequence!
Tumblr media
^using masks to create this!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
^the rest of it (needs to be refined ofc).

“the scales”
Like a balancing scale, I want to make this word tilt and like the scales of a fish, have the letters ‘fall off one by one’
Tumblr media Tumblr media
^coming up with how the scales will fall off was so difficult but here are the animation settings I used.

“thought the job was done”
Tumblr media
^played around with opacity to achieve a slight glitching effect for the word ‘done’ to illustrate how there was plenty of work to still be done.
Tumblr media
^6th experiment

^marked improvement I reckon :))

“that the people, say the people of my generation...”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjF2VqII0Kc&ab_channel=KingReap3r
Tumblr media
^had a lot of moving parts which made it interesting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
^got creative with ‘people’ and rotated them 90 degrees to make it seem like they were standing. Then the word ‘say’ comes out of the people’s imaginary mouth.

"Overachieving Baby Boomers”
Tumblr media
^too many things happening - the viewer’s eye can’t keep up with the A+++ and then the ‘baby boomers’ bit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
^new settings for drop shadow (very subtle). Made this to be an animation preset so that it’s easier to add this effect to everything.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
^dude, refining the line animation took me soooo long oml but it reminded me of the basics of what animation was all about - it’s the movement between 2 points (essentially) - telling myself this really helped me to figure out the positioning of keyframes.

Adjustments to the title
Tumblr media
^changed ‘reflection’ to be light instead for better visual contast and to represent the fragility - to match the tone of the rest of the video, I  might change this.

^refer later for inspo’
- I gotta create a design system for the typefaces e.g. font size etc.

Adjustment Layers - Effects
Tumblr media
^added a very subtle grain layer (5-8%) to imply not only the year in which this audio clip was taken but the timeless quality of her message and how long this issue has remained.
Tumblr media
^just playing with the different effects.
Tumblr media
^inspired from this kinetic type video.
Tumblr media
^added a very subtle vignette effect to add a more dramatic feel.
Tumblr media
^I’m also playing around with the drop shadow effect to add extra depth to the text.

“My goodness...Hilary Clinton...”etc.
Tumblr media
^I think something I’m learning is that not every frame needs to have special effects or something ‘cool’. It’s good to sometimes restrain those moments in order to let the special ones really shine. So above, I’m just using simple position keyframes with ease in and out + motion blur to introduce these quotes.
NOTE: perhaps try this with the beige background so that the next lines “couldnt get elected as president etc’ will have a red background and it pops out more.
Tumblr media
I’ll fix the leading later!
