The Creative:
♡ Being a designer, I consider myself as someone who acknowledges the value of both the analogue and digital process, and goes out of my way to incorporate them in most of my creative projects. Throughout most of my life as a creative, I have found influence in the beauty and sometimes, ugliness, in the things I come across on a daily basis. Often coming from the environment I tend to surround myself in the most. These being my room and the city. Two very different places, that inspire me in very opposing ways. My room is my comfort place, where myself and my ideas are safe and free, where my surroundings that have been decorated to match my personality. Whereas central Auckland is a place to explore, and pause all you know for a short period, to expand on the things I thought I knew everything about.

♡ Reasons behind each item
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
♡ Workout accessories (Gymshark wriststraps, dumbells, socks)
These wrist straps were given to me by my boyfriend around 2 years into my weight training. I got to a point where my legs were stronger than my grip, and it was holding me back, I expressed by concerns to my bf, and he bought me these. The most perfect pair of wrist straps. Therefore, to me, these represent many things, the endless support for my training from my bf, embracing femininity in the gym, with the pink and the progress I have made in the gym so far, enough so, where my strength has reached a level, where my leg strength isn't holding me back, it's just my grip strength.

♡ Paint accessories (brushes and paint)
My paint brushes and paints have allowed me to create any and everything I have ever painted. From gifts for other people, painting things for my room, or painting my own clay creations. Without my brushes, I would not have the means to enjoy this hobby. Not to mention that getting new brushes is always exciting.
Tumblr media
♡ Headphones
I listen to music every single day. I wake up, and play music while I shower and get ready, in the car, in the train, while I work, while I work out, everything. These headphones I have gotten recently, and they make the music listening experience so much better, and allow me to feel as if I am in my own world. As crazy as it may sound, I would find it very difficult to get through the day, listening to busy streets, without music. I would go as far as to say, that if I didn't have my headphones in a situation in which I usually would, it would make the task I need to complete, 100 times as difficult, affecting my mood immensely.

♡ Indian accessories (bags, jewellery, evil eye keychain)
As I have gotten older, I have embraced my culture more and more. Being an indian girl, especially when I was younger, I felt myself falling victim to the westernised beauty standard, and felt as if I couldn't be considered even remotely attractive or pretty. These items I have displayed around my room, are me finally being proud of where I'm from and no longer feeling that it is something I should be feeling bad about.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
♡ Hair accessories (hair gel, clip and brush)
In the last 5 months, I have started the process of embracing my natural hair texture after straightening it for 4 years straight. These products represent the effort that I now put towards looking after my hair. My hair has always been important to me, in terms of length, and although I still care about having long hair, the health of my hair is finally becoming a priority.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
♡ Plushies and toys
These two plushies seem very superficial, however, the stories behind them are very important to me. Firstly, I have always been someone who loves collecting plushies. The cow plushy my Dad won for me at the Easter Show when I was so young, and the only thing I remember is him handing me the toy. The hello kitty toy I won recently, on a night out with my family at an arcade, and we have never all gone to an arcade together, just to play games. That night we play so many games, and lost so many times at the cranes. I was the only one who won something, it was this toy. That night meant a lot to me, because everyone was having genuine fun and my mum who is so hardworking and finds it hard to to relax, enjoyed herself, wants to go again and played like a kid. To me, this represents family time. The bubbles pop figure, is also a representation of family to me, particularly my sisters, and we consider ourselves the powerpuff girls, as theres three of us.
Tumblr media
♡ Crochet bag
Maybe two weeks into me learning how to crochet, I made this bag, after spending around 10 hours on it, not including the charm. This bag is a representation that I am able to do whatever I set my mind to no matter what. I wanted to make a crochet bag, with only a few weeks of experience, and I now have a bag I actually use and love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
♡ Heart rose quartz and trinkets
When I was younger, a barbie movie that I loved, and in it, the two barbie best friends, made necklaces out of heart shaped stones. I remember even finding a rock that was kind of shaped like a heart that I treasures, but I don't have it anymore. After being older, and being the heart loving person I am, I had to have something similar. After a hunt for a rose quartz heart, I found this at crystal mountain in the gift shop. I feel a part of me is complete, once I bought it. It also goes along with the fact that collecting little trinkets, has always been something I loved. The two charms are over a decade old, and I believe belonged to my older sisters, and I now treasure them as little trinkets, being true pieces from the early 2000s. They are also pf motifs I love, that are seen all over my room, hearts and stars.
Tumblr media
♡ Ball heels
These were my actual first pair of heels that I wore, and bought for myself, for ball. Ball was so important to me, and going all out was what I wanted. This was me finally embracing my feminine side, and having the opportunity in such a memorable way.

♡ Reasoning behind my 20 items
♡ A lot of my items in my 20 things are related to the improvements and changes I made with myself over the years. Others include items related to family and people I love, and what they represent, as well as important moments and small trinkets. Of which I've always been into.
♡ When I was younger, I pushed away femininity as much as I could, whether it be with what I wear, how I act, even with gravitating with colours. For example, up until recent years, the colour pink was something I went out of my way to reject, I tried to reject the things that I felt were stereotyped against women and girls, as often it was met with negative connotations. The colour pink is often a colour pushed onto the female gender, and was expected, and as shallow as a colour may be, to me, it was a representation of expectations that people had around girls, and the last thing I wanted, was to follow a stereotype. Coming into my late teen years, I realised that I always loved the colour pink, and that it doesn't mean anything, it's just a colour and if anything exceeding expectations, whilst carrying the stereotypes that are often used against us, is more powerful. That is why I included a lot of pink items, to me, they represent me embracing something that I once rejected for so long, in fear of being stereotyped. Overall, there are many things here that represent me allowing myself to be feminine.
♡ Items directly related to my love for the colour pink and how the stereotypes with a colour are irrelevant to a persons interests and capabilities.
♡ Another aspect of my life that I have tried to embrace, was my natural hair. During my early teens, one of the things that made me feel bad about my appearance, was my hair texture, its frizzy some are curly some are wavy some are straight, and it was long. Until mid high school I realised straightening my hair, was the way to fix my insecurities, and it worked. Four years later, I saw how damages my hair was. I used to have the thickest healthy hair, and due to my insecurities, I lost this. I had no one around me to show me how to embrace my natural hair which is actually curly. 5 months of me being on my natural hair journey, starting this year, I can say I have made so much progress and don't feel the need to straighten my hair, and I never thought I would. Not to mention putting the effort towards myself in this way. That is why there are a few items here to represent this.
♡ An aspect of my life that I have been embracing more and more, is my culture and its beauty. Therefore, there are a few items to represent this.

♡ Why I chose these designers
♡ Why I chose Marc Moore I chose Marc Moore as often his approach to his design skews towards the edgier side, often seen in these examples of The Stolen Girlfriends Club, of which he is the creative director. The motifs and design choices he makes towards this company in particular, are things that I often find using in my own work, as well as like the look of in general. For example, a reoccurring motif in this line, are hearts and stars in some way. And incorporating these two motifs comes to me unconsciously. Whether it be in my painting, clay making, crochet and accessories. The design choices he makes stylistically, is something I already use, but also plan incorporating throughout my design work, as I tend to gravitate similar motifs. However, the influence of his work and his perspective, is something I definitely intend on learning from and seeing how it progresses my ideas.
♡ Why I chose Karen Walker Similar to Marc Moore, I am a huge fan of the use of motifs in Karen Walkers jewellery and accessories. It is very playful, yet classic and timeless. I think there is something special about pieces that are designed in a way that can be relevant and appreciated for years on end, and this influences and reminds me that often times, having a basis of design rules for myself, and keeping things simple doesnt need to be boring, in fact, it most likely will be appreciated. Her work currently influences me to look art what I design and be able to strip back, and remember the significance of simplicity.
♡ Why I chose Paul Rand, Paul Rand is highly contrasting to my other influences and the reason for this is that I consider myself someone with complex interests in terms of art and design. I enjoy all the processes of making, and one of those being digital and graphic design. Paul Rand is my biggest influence and inspiration when it comes to this, and the success of his work and trying to pull apart and analyse why his design methods work is something i feel like is very significant. Going back to the idea of stripping back and allowing for negative space, and simple shapes and forms, I feel as though, Paul Rand did this very effectively and I would like to feel more comfortable in this. Knowing that the few things I have put in and design, work together well enough to communicate what I want, without the exaggeration of visual information.
♡ Why I chose the nope sisters, Brittany and Johanna Cosgrove Taking influence from large and well known designers is always beneficial, however, I believe there is value in every and any person and designer, regardless of how many people know of them. The nope sisters carry a strong message within their clothing and accessory design, an aspect I feel becomes watered down as a certain level of success is reached, and instead becomes less about inspiration and love for the art, and more about the profitability of it. The Nope Sisters however, have a reason bigger than them to continue. The majority if not all of their designs have a strong message of empowering women, and the emphasis on the word nope, to say nope when you don’t want to say yes. To remind women and girls specifically, that saying no is your right, to not feel the pressures of what the people around you may be projecting.
♡ Why I chose company of strangers, Sara Munro Company of strangers is yet another smaller business whose accessories are something I very much admire. They often use more eclectic designs that only a niche group of people would appreciate, for example, a huge strawberry ring, or egg plate. When I see this brand and it’s designs, it reminds me of the things I would make with clay when I was younger, and I think there’s something precious about finding beauty in some of the more random pieces, not everything in design needs to have a huge deep and emotional back story. At the end of the day, doesn’t should be fun and creative, in my opinion, and I think this brand does it very well, it truely inspires me to remember why I started design in the first place, for the love of trying different things and refining those skills. I hope to carry this more whimsical approach throughout my current work, and in the future.

What is material thinking?
Material thinking is part of a bigger process that leads to the establishment of an idea or product. It recognises the influence that the objects that surround us hold.. Being that humans are highly influenced by their surroundings, the objects that create our environment are highly significant to this.
Choose one of the creatives from the lecture, and describe their material thinking.
I believe that their material thinking was based on the surrounding people in their lives. For example, when she worked in a high school, she was inspired to create a work of art, that shows the pressures of being the ‘perfect’ student. Which was a story brought to her by a student, who wanted to share this more overlooked issue. When you’re so successful, you’re ultimately handed with eh responsibility, of being able to live up to that standard in every part of your life,. She also went on to explain that although this student felt weighed down by their responsibilities, once they got home, their family didn’t believe that these achievements were actually significant.
How can material thinking be seen in my own work?
Of course, when working with any medium, they come with their own pros as cons. Whether they are physical or mental constraints. Depending on your on capabilities with certain mediums, the constraints become more intense.
How would you reference the reading from today?
