Week 2 SDL _ Aotearoa creatives - Individual

Phoebe Morris

Phoebe Morris is an illustrator from Aotearoa who is freelance with individual works and being in teams. Her illustration style referred to the warm tone of colour and strokes in detail. The worldbuilding within her works contains a lot of imagination in her visual communication.

Phoebe Morris is creative I surprisingly admired her artwork once I saw the style represented by the digital painting. The high-quality artwork retains the texture of stroke to add warm and heavy moods technically. It lets readers get into the world she built through her work in a light tone.

Matt Grantham

Matt Grantham is a design director in the Aotearoa packaging design industry. The famous representations in his works are Tuffy Tissues, the Hidden Honey bee products and the Laughing Bones. His works highly represent the characteristics of each product in a strong image-making.

He is an Aotearoa creative which I found out from the class. I was fully interested when I saw the package he produced for the Streamland Manuka honey products. The strokes in detail are highly attractive and a good combination between a character and the topic.

Johnson Witehira

Johnson Witehira is a Maori type designer and artist, he is an expert at collaborating his artwork and typeface and representing the Maori culture. He is good at condensed typeface making and all of his typefaces are available to be used when typing Maori.

This is a Maori creative that I knew already from another course. The typographic system and the created style of graphic assets from his work are unique to Maori styles. It seems like walking into a cultural world when viewing his outcomes initially.

Chelsey Furedi

Chelsey Furedi is a comic artist and Illustrator from New Zealand. She becomes a freelance designer after graduating from Animation College in Auckland. Her works contain enhanced style with highly contrasted colours, and outstanding at creating the original characters according to the theme of each comic.

Chelsey Furedi is the Aotearoa creative who represents my favoured style and refers to my hobbies as creating characters and building the visual world within them. The Western style of stroke and facial features are fully represented in her outcome, which is another inspiring/interesting area of art I want to get in touch with.

Jason Bock

Jason Bock is a British creative who is a director of films. The one of connective/famous projects representing Aotearoa from his gallery is the 'Tiaki & The Guardians', which is the safety promotional movie for Air New Zealand. The full imagination from this fantasy short movie is attractive to passengers and also transfers the cultural characteristics of New Zealand culture.

Apart from the digital illustration, I am an international student who took the aircraft from Air New Zealand often. Their safety promotional short movies made me deep impression every time with the versatile presentation and the information within informatively. That deepened in my mind before I researched for the director. Apart from the Air New Zealand promotion, he is also skilful in music video and film directing.

Week 2 SDL _ Aotearoa creatives - Studio

Previously Unavailable

The Previously Unavailable is an Aotearoa studio that attends to several public campaigns. The characteristic of this team cannot be defined and narrowed to a specific category. They create innovative ideas, brands, creative design projects or venture businesses, which is variable for providing services.

The members behind the Previously Unavailable are widely in several categories of cooperation. Each member performs their duties separately. Besides the outstanding member cooperation, the workspace has been designed on the member's own as a comfortable place with a warm tone setting.

The project I provided as a reference is the one I am interested in the most. The company commissioned them named 'Supergenerous' which supplies the charity support service. The imagery that Previously Unavailable created accordingly strongly represents the meaning of support. On the other hand, the designed typeface 'Supershape' connects to the styled illustration creating a rounded, kindly impression of a charity.

Seachange Studio

Seachange is a partnership studio in Aotearoa. Their works for each campaign are flexible according to their global views of the design journey. They have done plenty of design works in categories in vibrant tones of colour. The one I am most interested in is the creation of a typeface according to the campaign 'We Compost' with the animated worm font. They are outstanding at creating meaning from a playful version of motifs.

Seachange is led by Amanda Gaskin and Tim Donaldson, serving as co-founders and creative directors. They both bring their experiences internationally to form the studio and leading skilful creatives in New Zealand and spread to all the international clients with their design.

I found interesting with these creatives with their contemporary style of projects. According to the one I referenced, the way they create their typography like their 'owned character' is outstanding and flexible to the theme they represent.

Curious Design

Curious Design is an independent Auckland-based design and brand strategy agency. As the team supplies service based on each brand's design, their works are highly in touch with the project via the visual element, the layout and the form of the package.

Curious Design Studio was formed by skilful creatives with skills for packaging design globally.

It is impressive to see the design based on different cultural themes based on each project from the Curious Design. On the other hand, the layout, colour scheme and diversity of their project remained in a technically clean, direct style.

Yeaboey

Yeaboey is an Aotearoa design agency form with high-quality motion design and animation for several public campaigns such as Vodafone and PAKNSAVE. The skilful technique of 3D animation is also the focal point of their progress. Yeaboey is the result of Jared Yearsley and Reuben Boey, these two creative creators represented their flexible world with an attractive, high-contrast animative skill depending on the project type.

It is my first time seeing Yeaboey from the course. Their animative skill is attractive according to each topic even on their public website. The entire visualisation of this group represents youth and lively moods.

Week 1 SDL 1-2_Party time!

Imagery of my party!

According to a party in imagination, besides inviting my family members to share the relaxing time. It will be my pleasure to invite all of the global creatives I mentioned in the previous post, especially Mateusz Urbanowicz and Lin Hua. The two are active on social media.

Besides them, here are some of the characteristics according to this party:

A house villa party - Apart from the party to outside, I assume that my dream party is aiming to stay at a comfortable and relaxing place without leaving my comfort zone unless there is a space comfortable and well-equipped all in one other house.

Plates and dinner party - According to the invited member, it is suitable to have a dinner party in a buffet to conform to the different habits of tastes with foods.

Illustration interaction - According to the guests almost all digital illustrators, I wish to have a long chat about drawing skill interaction within the different styles and cultural integration.

Broadcast hosting and Customers from the internet - The guests I have invited are all with a bunch of fans through social media which somehow link to the worldwide. This party will have broadcast via social media for fans to attend virtually.

Week 1 SDL 1-1_International Creatives

Kusama Yayoi

Yayoi Kusama is a painter, sculptor, and 'obsessional artist' from Japan who has been representing by using 'polka dots' in her entire creations. Her works have strongly affected the categories of Pop art and contemporary art. The forms of artwork are usually sculptures and street art which are suitable in a wide range of areas for displaying. Back to her childhood trauma, she had experienced a period in which value males more than females. On the other hand, Japan was conservative in the 20th century which all criticised her art style. Even affected her mental health and attempted suicide repeatedly. Her mental stresses turned to the passion and insane of creating her art, her unexpected world, and made her one of the world's representative artists.

Shinkai Makoto

Shinkai Makoto is a director, writer, producer, animator, editor, cinematographer, voice actor, manga artist and former graphic designer from Japan. There are some representative animate movies directed by him, such as Suzume (2022), Your Name. (2016) and The Garden of Words (2013). Each of them is the trend in the market of animation in Japan and worldwide.

The characteristic of his directed works is richly crafted, hand-drawn backgrounds and light patterns, with an emphasis on natural imagery. The background design is a reference to real Japanese streets. As same as the world he created in the movie, the cross-over between real life and virtual life is integrated into the plot. The theory is successful at creating a 'magical realism'.

Mateusz Urbanowicz

Mateusz Urbanowicz is a Polish illustrator, artist and animator who moved to Japan for marriage and painting careers. He belongs to the Comix Wave Films animation studio with Shinkai Makoto. He participated in the scene design and main illustration of the movie 'Your Name' and 'Suzume', and the primary vision design of other movie posters.

He is passionate about the watercolour painting of old buildings. He found interest in the streets with alleys, temples and lower buildings which surprised Mateusz Urbanowicz like a 'surprise pack'. The illustration accumulated a long period and formed a book named 'Boutique de Tokyo'. Moreover, he is also passionate about short animation which represents his work produced individually.

Miyuzaki Hayao

Miyazaki Hayao is a representative animate director and illustrator in Japan. Also one of the co-founders in Studio Ghibli with Isao Takahata. The animated movies directed by him are almost all popular, such as 'Castle in the Sky (1986), 'Spirit Away' (2001), 'Howl's Moving Castle (2004) and he released his manifesto of retirement with his latest directed animation named 'The Boy and the Heron' in 2023.

Compared with his mature identity in person, the style of his directed animation is almost in a warm, comfortable mood with an exquisite stroke of character and worldbuilding. Moreover, a profound message usually hides behind the plot in each story, such as the environmental protection in the movie 'Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind' and the discussion of life in the movie 'The Boy and the Heron'. These characteristics form him a representative stage in the world.

Say HANA

SAY Hana is the pseudonym for an illustrator, digital designer and graphic designer from Taiwan. The actual name is Lin Hua. The characteristic of her artwork remains a bunch of details within the main character. The gorgeousness is not reduced even in the low-saturated tone of colour palettes.

One of her most famous projects is the 'Personification of Diseases', which is a project from TWCDC (Taiwan Center for Disease Control and Prevention) and other creatives from Taiwan. This project aims to let people gain knowledge about the diseases around the Earth without fearing facing the actual symptom shown in real photographs, such as COVID-19 or Syphilis. Even this project has a controversy of 'embellishing the actual disease'. The character design, the clothes style or decorative elements, and even the content of the magazine-type writing are all been criticised for the history, the symptom and the definition of disease accordingly.

Hanatsuki

Hanatsuki is a pseudonym for a fashion designer from Japan. The actual name of the designer does not disclose. The work from Hanatsuki is groundbreaking at combining traditional clothes with contemporary trends. The colour palette of Hanatsuki's work is soft in ground tone and represents the traditional Kimono patterns. Hanatsuki published a book named 'GENDAI SOSAKU WAFUKU (Contemporary creative kimono)', which is a collection of Hanatsuki's provided work in several categories, and aiming to design contemporary cloth but also combine the beauty of traditions in Japan.

Design in Public Arenas - Auckland War Memorial Museum

These are the public locker decoration in the AM (Auckland war memorial museum). There are stickers of ancient 'bags' and 'vessels' on each locker. This is a playful strategy for decorating a locker and making them involved in the mood of the museum. It also increases the chance for people to gain knowledge once they select the locker and check the numbered list for each one of the cool ancient bags or vessels.

Design Research tutorial - Week 1

Reflection from lecture - What makes me plastic?

About the presentation named ‘What makes me plastic’. It is impressive the design strategies they have chosen for the project by the real-life survey. It is a method to receive feedback in-depth with the thinking of audiences, and they receive several samples to support them with the afterwards processes. The mood of the project is surrounded by a dark, realistic mood which integrated between real-life photographs and handwriting, which represented the ‘inner think’ or the ‘stereotype’ behind a person and connection to the society. On the other hand, this project makes people refer to their cultural differences.

The creative

• Who is doing the creative practice and underpinning research?

It is me studying.

• Who am I/the creative as a designer?

In my opinion, I am a 'learner' as a designer in limited knowledge, confidence. Learnt everything but not in depth yet.

• What are the influences on me/the creative as a designer and where do they come from?

The lack of knowledge, language barrier and the introvert mood, they all come from the real life being. On the other hand, the social medias, mates and the changes of this world also influence me hugely.

• How can I/the creative unpack the personal design ideologies that cultural shifts, ethics, and responsibility that impact my decision-making?

It contains further studying about the change in mind before making design decision, and be balance between the decision shifting and owned style.

• How might I/the creative expand my visual vocabulary by understanding the environmental, social, cultural, political contexts of my design influences?

Attend, view broader designers to enrich the mind, also be more care about the social discussion in real life via medias.

• Where do I/the creative stand in relation to my practice and what do I value?

At this stage, It is tuff for me to value about creating my style which shifting to the personal passionate than passing the course. I value the wholeness of my designed project and which might be careless about the style representation.
