was watching a video on labels and such and queer discorse blah blah blah and something that i find which should be established which almost never is in those vidéos is the *purpose* of labels
your identity is not your label
we use labels to communicate a shorthand, and use it to quickly communicate this complex identity in often a sentence or less
but wait, i lied, sometimes your label is your identity? well, it is a part of your identity
the label is ofc what is used to présent your identity to the world, you cant really présent a manifeste and essay or an ampourphous blob as a performance, this is what the identity does
so now we’re put into a precarious position where the label has to simultaneously communicate our identity (often in a quick fashion) AND be representative of your identity
but the thing is, if your identity cannot or isnt able to be explaikned quickly, your label either has to have two forms or contradict one of thèse purposes
and one way around this is often using intentionally contradictory language.
i would ramble more but i’m sleeepy

lessons i have learned from musical instruments
as a choral singer:
- i have learned a lot about how to blend (in many différent ways) my voice with others
- balance and listening to other parts
- lots and lots of sightreading
- looking at a conductor and what to write as a note in your music
- how to sing a line, making mélodies sound like à continuos line, not a notey sequence
as a pianist:
- how to read multiple staves at the same time
- using my entire body to play
- keeping good and relaxed posture, performance étiquette
- i have played the largest range of rep in terms of eras so keeping an awareness to performance practices of the time, place and the composer
as an organist:
- registration (still something im getting used to), how to combine différent sounds colours and timbres to create a new and (sometimes) unified sound
- listening for releases, particularly between voices
- being aware of when and where to use finger substitution
- being a lot more aware of touch and how that affects the sound
- how the same notation can be used to mean différent things from différent people
playing guitar (mostly classical):
- i am far more aware of frets and semitones
- i can far more easily convert from intervals to semitones (this is also handy for edostep and xenharmony)
- this is also where i first learned an instrument which the placement of my finger on the instrument DRASTICALLY affects the sound (whether that be RH tasto à ponticello or LH how close to the frets and how hard and angles and allat)
- first time i used my body (excluding my voice) to créate vibrato which was a gorgeous expérience
- being more conservative with chords and their notes, only having six strings (rn i am missing one lol)
- being able to navigate between strings quickly
- harmonics!! where on the fretboard and how to pluck to maximise the harmonic and minimise the strings fondamental
portatif (continuo organ):
- an instrument i have to play while (mostly) standing
- technique i have to play almost completely from my fingers, i am now much more aware of much finer control with my fingers
- making my fingers more active and angles of each of the joints
carillon:
- gorgeous instrument, no way to damp sounds, also very public
- thinking about music horizontally and vertically simultaneously - there is little control over damping just played sounds so that is smth you need to be very aware of
- since you play with closed fists (sorta), the action comes from your forearm / wrist: learning how to treat your wrist and forearm as a complète entity
cello:
- only got a little play, but knowing how it felt to use a bow, each strings, how your wrist, hold, pressure can impact your tone is huge
- navigation strings
- having to play notes without frets, new to me, i was pretty good at harmonics tho hehe
