The costume storytelling for Ford in the BBC series is one of my favorites of all time. Ford’s clothing isn’t described in the book so there wasn’t anything to go off of, he could have been totally normcore like in the movie.

But when I saw his full outfit for the first time I immediately had a vision of him, fresh on earth in the early to mid 60s, walking into a charity shop and immediately buying the first stuff he found in his size. I could see it as clear as if it was filmed.

He observes that the Earth man uniform is the “suit jacket-sweater-collared shirt-tie-trousers” combo, but because he doesn’t have a real job like the white collar men who dress like that, he doesn’t understand the context of the clothes. He doesn’t understand the rule of not mixing patterns or that Earth men don’t wear sneakers with their nice clothes.

There’s probably some context I’m missing with mod fashion, since he landed in the 60s, but I like to imagine that he fit in with UK counter culture on some insanely improbable coincidence, and not on purpose.

Anyways, shoutout to Dee Robson for designing the outfit of all time. An outfit so good I spent real money and time finding a blazer that matches Fords.
