Chen’s Mastery Journal - Story Development for Film
In this article, I would like to analyze a horror film Us (2019). I’m a horror fan, so I can't wait to watch the latest horror film Us (2019) which is directed by Jordan Peele as the director of Get Out(2017). I watched it with my classmates when it was released on the first day. After watching it, I am so confused as others. One reason is the language problem, the other is that this film isn’t a simple popcorn movie. Therefore, I do some research about it to understand what it conveys. Let me start to share my thought about this movie.
Let me briefly introduce the film, AdelaideWilsonvisit Santa Cruz, California with her family, her husband Gabe, daughter Zora and son Jason, but there is a piece of the bad memory of her childhood. They plan to have a good time with their friends, the Tyler family. After a day at the beach, Adelaide increasingly unable to get out of the pain of the past, she feels more and more that some bad things will happen to her family. That night, four mysterious people break into Adelaide's place where they're staying. They are such as a family with grotesque action. There seem to be more weird things waiting for the Wilson family.
First, I would like to talk about the scriptwriting of this film. the whole story isn’t complicated, but there are many meaningful details behind the story. If putting the main idea into one sentence, it would be: the Wilson family fight against the clone people, but the truth is that the clone girl and the real girl were exchanged since they are children. People said this movie present the situation of the U.S. now, so the title Us means the U.S. There is a dialogue “We are American.” which try to break the fourth wall to talk with the audience. In the movie, the clone people can’t speak and are controlled by the original people, they are living in underground. These points symbolize that the vulnerable group can’t directly express themselves, need to be controlled by the high-ranking group and live in the slum area. One day, the people from the underground will fight against the people from the top because this situation can no longer be stayed by them. It indicates the racism and the growing gap between rich and poor are still in this country, people can’t ignore these problems. Therefore, the reason why they use scissors to kill the original people, they don’t want to be puppets anymore. In the end, the clone people stand side by side, hand in hand as a line around the country. It relates to that Hands Across America was a charity event held in the United States in 1986. The main character also grew up around the time. Some people guess this line is from east to west, separates north and south, so it may relate with the civil war. It wants to convey the governor monitoring and control of the American people as negro slaves. By the way, in this movie, the 11:11 repeatedly appears that indicates the 11 chapter, the 11 quarter in Jeremiah, “Therefore thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them.” It means the disaster is coming.
Second, I will talk about the storytelling of this film. The rabbit is an important element in this film. it may be the food of the underground people, the experimental subject of clone, the symbol of weakness and well-behaved. However, it makes the film creepier. Also, the score and some of the shots are effective for the genre. In my mind, the genre of this film not only horror and thriller but also a dark comedy. Because of some scenes, there are funny conversations which have a satirical effect. The big part of the storytelling is the main character is the real clone people. People follow the story till the end when we know the truth and it explains most of the confused points. There is a dancing scene. It is the best scene in this movie for me. It shows the underground world and tells the life of the main character and her original. The director Jordan Peele creates an underground world to the audience which is awesome. Jordan has a unique and creative way to tell the story. That is the reason why it is successful. The horror of Jordan is different from James Wan who is also good at directing horror movies, but they are totally different kind of horror. I like movies from both of them. James focuses on the scared feeling more, and Jordan wants to convey more deep meanings behind the story. There is a funny thing for me. After watching this film, you can’t who is wrong, or who is right. You can’t identify who is bad guys, as the people during the war or movement aren’t one hundred percent bad guys. In that time, they think they were doing right. Therefore, I like this movie a lot. I think that point also is the director who wants to convey.
In conclusion, I like this horror film Us (2019)so much. I highly recommend check it out. It is different from other horror movies. A good movie must be related to the audience, based on reality, history, social, and humanity. It must be enough interesting to attract people and has something to convey to people. People can gain something from a good movie. Maybe sometimes a good movie isn’t easy to understand, it makes the audience would like to watch again and again and get new stuff every time. It stays in your mind for a long time after watching. This experience is such a good feeling to the audience, also hoped by the filmmaker. However, I'm looking forward to the next movie directed by Jordan Peele.

Chen’s Mastery Journal - Film Production Thesis IV: Film Assembly
In Film Production Thesis IV: Film Assembly class, I would like to learn about the process of audio editing and mixing for film. My goal is to be a director, so I need to understand every aspect of filmmaking. It will help me to work with different departments well. Also, the audio is so important for a film. I also spend a month to adjust the audio of my short. After that, I realize there are seven versions of a 10-mins short film. The final version is totally different from the first one. When I studied my bachelor’s degree in China, I know this software pro tools, but I am not familiar with it. In this class, I can learn more about it and get some practices. I learn it on Lynda by myself, because there are too many videos to watch, it makes me bored a little bit. Still, I learn a lot about pro tools. The benefit of this class is that I have an opportunity to learn to edit and mix audio in the dub stage. The dub stage is so professional as working in the industry. And there are some internship students who will help us to adjust audio because we don’t have the ability to handle it now. We need to communicate with them and give them our feedback. They also give us some good suggestions. For me, the most interesting part is doing ADR and Foley. People need to follow the video and remake the sound to match the original sound. The locations and actions are normal and common, so it is easy to do Foley. It doesn’t look like the BTS of the feature film post-production. Finally, we did it, I am glad that our thesis is good after post-production. Our team is working well with each instructor who helps us a lot. All in all, I experience a lot of the workflow of the audio editing and mixing which is follow the standard of the film industry. It will help me in my career.

Chen’s Mastery Journal - Film Production Thesis III: Post-Production
In Film Production Thesis III: Post-Production class, I would like to improve my editing skill and help my thesis editing. After I finished my bachelor’s degree in China, I did an internship as an editor about one year. That project is an independent documentary, so I worked in a three-people small group. I learn a lot from that experience. After that I was confident about my editing. When I took this class, I think I can handle it easily. Actually, it is different as I think, I learn a lot from this class. Before this class, I just learned about concept of editing and the application of the editing software. For this class, I not only improve them, but also learn a lot of the knowledge of professional working process. It helps me work well with other post-production people. It can’t be learned from an independent low-budget project. It is a little bit complicated as a beginner, but it is systematic and necessary for post-production. Honestly, I don’t really understand everything until now, but I think I can more and more familiar after I do more practices. I would like to be an editor because I can learn a lot of filmmaking from it in order to be a director in future. Editing is very important for a film, it can recreate a film. I believe different editors do edit by same footage, there will be different versions as different film. In our thesis editing, it changed a lot from the assembly to the picture lock. I glad it becomes better and better. There are some important elements for editor. First, it is creativity. Sometimes, the footage sucks, but you can make it happen by your creativity as a good editor. Second, it is observation. They need to have good eyes to catch a good moment to cut. That moment can’t be early or late. Sometimes, they need to be cruel-hearted to the footage which may be very precious to the director, but they need to cut it off base on the expression of the film. Finally, it is patience. Patience is the key of the successful people. As editor, patience is more important, they need to watch the footage over and over again and be a friend with your footage. All in all, I hope our thesis can be a good film after our post-production.

Chen’s Mastery Journal - Film Production Thesis II: Production
In Film Production Thesis II: Production class, I would like to experience the professional shooting and accomplish our thesis. We already spent a long time to prepare our pre-production. fortunately, everything was working well in the whole process. Maybe this class schedule is too flexible for us, sometimes we just have two class a week, but we still learn from this course. We have a lot of meeting, everyone pays more attention to their position. For me, I am the gaffer of out thesis, this is a big challenge to me. This is my first time as a gaffer on set. We have two problems in our shooting project. One is we shoot night time during daytime. I need to design how to block the daylight, make it looks like night time. At the same time, we have some moonlight which comes from the window. Another problem is that the location is too small for setting the camera and light. I kept communicating with our DP and 1st AD about the light setting and shooting schedule. We try to save our time to finish every shot. We did as many perps as we can. During on set, fortunately, we always behind the schedule, but we finally finished every shot. I am glad that we can do it. There are two reasons why we can work well. One is everyone is on the same page. For example, 1st AD did a great job, she is good to push and release our work. When we behind the schedule more and more, she will push harder and harder and vice versa. Other people also understand her job, so we didn’t have any argument with her. Instead of argument, people will give their ideas to help the shooting effectively, even remind to cancel some unnecessary shot to save the time. It is the other reason that we keep flexibility and be impromptu. We change the schedule to increase our efficiency. For me, I will try to tell the camera team to shoot the similar angle first because I don’t need to move the light backward and forward. All in all, our thesis is successful, because of those points. We keep everyone on the same page. we understand each position for each people, then we are patient and respect other people. We do more perps for the shooting in pre-production and be flexible on set. Those are learned from this thesis shooting. I am so lucky I can be in this group and work with them well. I hope my first gaffer job which is not too bad and helpful. Finally, we did it.

Chen’s Mastery Journal - Film Production Thesis I: Pre-Production
I would like to share a short film Inside (2002) for this class. I think it will help for our thesis film. The genre of this short is thriller and suspense. The idea is also easy, but I will tell the reason why I like it in following content. First, the length of this film is just five minutes, it still has a completed structure; beginning, middle, and end; and is a good story, includes Inciting incident, plot points I and II, midpoint, climax, resolution, denouement. At the beginning, we can know that the main character is a psychotic by the visual. He is required to get out the room and send to somewhere. And it tells us he has multiple personality disorder as the story developed. The doctor tries to know his real name, but his many personalities argue inside him and make fun with the doctor. Finally, the doctor gets his real name which is Daniel, but the doctor is actually one of his personalities, she is successful to leads other personalities to cheat the real doctor. Second, because of the story, it doesn’t have many locations. Although the characters are a lot in this short film, the production design is not a big deal. They worked well for it. Different personalities have different costumes and makeup to distinguish. Except production design, the cinematography, sound and editing also work well. Maybe some of the sound is not clear to follow, but it works for conforming to the plot. Finally, the most successful thing is the visual, indeed it is basic on good lighting, good composition, and good camera movement, but it must have a good storytelling. The director uses the lighting and camera movement to introduce Daniel’s different personalities in the hallway and makes the personalities visible. These builds a good sense of suspense for audience. At the end, it exposes a big surprise to us, the woman is not the real doctor, just a personality inside Daniel. Because of these reasons, I like this short film so much.
After watched this short film Inside (2002), I am sure of my thought, the storytelling is important as the script. Now, our script is locked, so we can’t do anything of script. We need to figure out what the best storytelling of the film is. Definitely, we have to make the lighting, composition, and camera movement good and professional which looks like this short film. After that, we can build a viewpoint to tell the story better. For example, the dramatic purpose of short film Inside (2002) is to show audience the inside of the person who has multiple personality disorder. at the same time, it hides the woman is one of his personalities. In my opinion, because the topic of our film, I think we can create the camera position which likes from the masked man or webcam to monitor the main character, such POV from CCTV, window, or around them. It will get a purpose or reason for camera position and movement to setup. The good point is that we don’t have many locations or characters, and the story happen in one day. These elements make our zero-low resource film possible. As far as I can see there are two practical challenges for us. One is the shots of website on the screen, we need to show many stuffs in this film. Therefore, I am worry about the time and the quality of shooting. I think we need to shoot some of those shots, or we can do the pre-shoot before the shooting day as Dino said. Another one is the space of the location is too tight for shooting. We don’t have enough space to setup the gear. I would like to do pre-set before the shooting day. We can do set dressing and bring some gear to there, then try to set up the gear for every shot. We can take the photos as references for official shooting. In my mind, I prefer to do as many practices as we can before the shooting because we don’t have a lot on set experiences. Consequently, everything may happen on set which we can’t expect. If we have more practices and preparation, we figure out as soon as possible. However, so far so good for our working, everyone works well in our team. It bases on our finished production assignment of other class well before. And we keep going step by step asusual. I hope we can make a nice and satisfied thesis for ourselves.

Chen’s Mastery Journal - Business of Film

In Business of Film this class, I want to learn how to work the business of film with the law in the film industry in the U.S. I hope I can manage and develop my career in the film industry after this class. I would like to understand networking, negotiation, film festivals, marketing, financing, and international markets. As a beginner director, I need to know the issues of copyright and intellectual property law, and contract negotiation. There are a few things that I prefer to share with everyone. First, I understood the market of the film in the U.S. After that, I can know how to make a successful film which the audiences like. Also, I gained some knowledge about independent film production or low-budget film production how they work. I would like to do the independent film or low-budget film which get me more freedom in creation, so these knowledges are good for me to achieve my goal. Second, I knew the law of filmmaking, I can avoid the problem of copyright and intellectual property. I not only protect my creation but also don’t break the law. Third, the more important part is about my work in the U.S. I learned several ways in work searching. After that, I want to get a job which needs a good networking. In addition, I rewrote my resume and built my website to conduct myself. Finally, I learned how to do contract negotiation. I ignored this point, the contract must be important, too. It is a way to protect myself. I like this class, it is so helpful to me. I plan to start looking for a job or internship now.
While I was on set for this month’s thesis films, I would like to share my reflection about business and intellectual property. In this month, I worked in two thesis groups A Model Preacherand Bowel Over. They don’t have any big problem of intellectual property, because their producer is the same person who already worked several times as a producer before. The producer gets releases from all of the participants include actors and the crew. They have location agreements to use the location. Their scripts both are original. They use copyright or trademarked material correctly. There are not posters or identifiable products on set, they don’t need to have the rights to use. But these two groups have some problems on set. In the group A Model Preacher, because they don’t have enough people on set, the director needs to handle different thing at the same time, even order the food. This situation has a negative impact on set. They ignore the importance of lighting in order to not behind on the schedule, but they can follow the schedule most of the time. Therefore, I prefer to work with this team which has an efficient team working. I would like to recommend them that the director must pay attention to the directing on set first, don’t handle a lot thing at the same time. In the group Bowel Over, they have a big problem which is the inefficient and unprofessional behavior. They don’t have a good UPM or AD to warm the crew following the schedule, even the actors don’t follow call sheet. Everyone come to the location at the different time, most people are late. In addition, they spend a long time to set the lighting, such as one hour. Sometimes they lost the attention to gossip. Therefore, they are usually behind the schedule a lot. Most of the time, they will stay up late on set. I like the people in this crew, but I hate this inefficient and unprofessional work. I would strongly advise them to follow the schedule strictly and spend some time in the lighting setting before the shooting day. By this status, they work in the future, it must be lost the job or waste money. I hope people pay the most attention when we work, after that we can chill in the free time.

Chen’s Mastery Journal - Visual Storytelling Techniques and Technology
I like this class, because some of my viewpoints similar with my instructor Van. I like challenge and creation, so this class gets me a chance to improve myself by assignment. As a filmmaker or artist, I think I need to be creative. At the beginning in this class, I said I don’t really like American movie which actually means popcorn movie. Although I don’t like that kind of movie, I still watch them to relax myself. As I said, my favorite genre of movie is art film, independent film and documentary, but I also like horror. I am a horror fan. This class require me to watch movie everyday, so I watch a lot horror movie.
I am so open-mind, I would like to know why people like some movie which isn’t art film, independent film or documentary. I keep thinking about how to make more people like art film, independent film and documentary as commercial film. I study and explore the storytelling of the commercial film. I want to make a art film with my own culture, it can be liked by most people.

Chen’s Mastery Journal - Experimental Filmmaking
In Experimental Filmmaking this class, I want to learn nontraditional methods of visual storytelling. The experimental methods involve multiple content, structure, style, and technology. Understanding these concepts and explore the new art of filmmaking. I try to create and found own ways in filmmaking. I am an open-mind person and would like to know new things, so I am so excited about this class. I gained many new thoughts from this class. There are a few things that I prefer to share with everyone. First, the more interesting thing is the six second video. For the first time, I felt it is difficult, but also exciting. It is a challenge for me. I never do this kind of video before. This assignment doesn’t only give me obstruction, but also give a new point of view to think about the storytelling. Second, I learned a lot of the knowledge of gear. I just have few classes in soundstage, but these are useful. I enjoy to do setting with my classmate and know how to set the lighting. I just have an opportunity to join thesis film shooting as a grip, so I can practice my skill from this class. After this experience, I realize the gaffer and grip are so important on set and the lighting also can change the film a lot. That makes me change my mind, I prefer to be a gaffer or grip in my own thesis film. Finally, this month is tough for me because I have many things to work at the same time. My script is chosen to pitch, and I will help my classmate to pitch as a writer. In addition, I need to shoot my own assignment, join in thesis film shooting, and help my classmate’s shooting. Therefore, I need to do a good time management for those. It is also a big challenge. In this class, I have more opportunities to experience different things which can help me as a director in the future.

Chen’s Mastery Journal - Directing Talent
In Directing Talent this class, I want to learn how to direct the actors better because I prefer to be a director in the future. Some people think if you can act well, you can direct as well. When I began this class, the professor got us an opportunity to be an actor as acting experience. For me, I don’t like to act, but I tried to ignore people when I was acting. After this experience, I realize I am not too bad at acting, but I still don’t like it. I learn that I will direct the performance from the actors’ point of view. It makes me have a good conversation with actors easily before the shooting. After three times directing scenes, I feel more confident to direct the actors. I know I can do the Uta Hagen Questions, blocking, and rehearsal to help my directing. In my first directing, I overdo the script, it limits the performance of the actors, so I know I need to give them some space in creating their performance. In the second directing, we lose many settings for our directing because we move to a new soundstage. Although it makes our acting and directing limited, it also gives us chance to use our imagination. I try to write a new script basic on the location and the non-professional actors (our own classmates). I did it and I feel it not bad. I use this script for my second directing scene, the result is good. Therefore, I take a lesson about that sometimes you may have some limitations, but it also gets you a chance. The bigger problem for me is the language. English is not my first language, but l tries my best in the three times directing. I feel confident to talk with the actors. I may use the wrong grammar or word, but they still can understand me. Therefore, I think I bold speak English with everyone and I need to do more practices as a director in the rest of the school time. I like this class and I have many fun times with my classmates.

Mastery Journal-Filmmaking Concepts and Practices
As a film production student, thezero/low-resource film is usually our only choice. This may last until you become a famous and successful filmmaker. Most of the independent films have zero/low-resources, and it lets the crew be free to create something great which could lead to their big breakthrough. In the following article, the zero/low-resource filmwill be analyzed by the cinematicelementsfrom the short film The Piano Tuner. This will help the beginning of filmmaking develop.
There are some aspects of cinematic elements to analysis the short film The Piano Tuner. The logline is very important because it is the audiences first impression. The logline of The Piano Tuner shows the audience it will be an interesting story and it will make them curious. A good script is the soul of a good film. The script of The Piano Tuneruses a good dramatic structure as well as The Hero’s Journey. It keeps the same tone from beginning to end, and constantly offers interesting points to the audiences. They will continue to watch it without getting bored. For example, the beginning and the end of The Piano Tuneris the same scene, but it doesn’t tell what actuallyhappened in the scene. At the end, the audience will realize it and be surprised.Thesetting is so helpful for The Piano Tunerbecause it has good locations which makes it a good film. An indoor set is very common for films. When things are going well for the main character in the beginning, the setting is bright and occurs during the day. When he witnesses a murder, the setting is set during the night with a dark room. Although there is a lot of dialogue for this short film, it reminds me of the story of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan’s wifedied, and the experiment in the restaurant. The cinematographyis the core of the film. The film must show the story by the screen. The Piano Tuneruses the shallow depth of field, the close shot size, and the tripod without any camera movement. This allows the audiences to pay more attention to the main character. The frame can avoid something that is unnecessary, and the stableframe can increase attention on the film. The Piano Tuner usesa lot of natural lightwhich causes the drama to be more reasonable. Moreover, the editing has a big influence on the film as anothercreation. It can make the film come alive. In The Piano Tuner, the editing caused the film to have good rhythm. It makes it a fluid and interesting story. Due to these cinematic elements, The Piano Tune is successful and supports its premise.
According to the short film The Piano Tuner, I willdiscuss whichcinematic elements can work for my own film as the zero/low resource film. The script is a key to the film, not to mention the zero/low resource film. It determines how to produce the film. Therefore, my main character will be a deaf person who doesn’t need any dialogue. I will use a common location and I only need a few people. The main idea of my own film Keep Silentis ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’which is talking about judgment and prejudice. This script doesn’t follow the rule The Hero’s Journey, but it has a turning point. I plan to hide the fact that the main character is deaf. I will also construct the coldness of the main character who is judged by people. Consequently, most of the time I will show his normal life and his behaver of him ignoring people. The script will become easy to achieve by having zero/low resource. It seems a little monotonous, but itis only 3 pages and I will keep what is necessary in the script. As a result, it won’t be boring to the audience. The cinematographyof Keep Silent is opposite with The Piano Tuner. The reason it is opposite is because I plan to have the audience peeping at the main character as well as the people around him. At the same time, the long distance can present the sense of coldness and calmness. Because of the long-distance shooting, I need to use deep depth of field with a clear background of what happened. The number of takes should be limited because it can shorten the shooting time and the amount of mistakes being shot. It can have an effective visual expression and make the audience focus on useful takes without wastingtheir time. This can avoid some unnecessary takes which can damage the rhythm of the film. Although the cinematography style is so different between two films, I hope to use the tripodand natural light in order to achieve the same purpose. The tripod is used as the professional choice, otherwise, the frame is not stable. The natural light can reduce the budget and is fit for the beginning of filmmaking. In addition, the main character is deaf, so I won’t use too much music. This point also decreases the budget such as sound mixing, and music composing. When the storyline is clear, it limits the amount of takes which causes editing to be quicker. The filmmaker can check easily through the rough cut and build a good rhythm in the film. By the way, choosing film school students or people who have an interest in filmmaking can cut down the budget. These people are probably easier to cooperatewith and are easier to control.
Inthis essay, the cinematic factorsof low-cost film production were discussed, and the basics onthe short film The Piano Tuner. Therefore, it can teach the new filmmaker how to make their own movie with the small budget, which connects tothe conception of my own short filmKeep Silent. In my opinion, the low budget films not only have freedom to create but also has a better chance at achieving the big breakthrough. For example, Jim Jarmusch is one of my favorite directors, he is a famous and successful independent film director in the U.S. He claims the low budget films give him creative freedom and he’s been doing it for over 20 years. The limited budget filmcan also be a successful film.

‘The main character, played by Chris Parker, wanders around a dingy New York atmosphere and is confronted by a number of intriguing characters as he ponders the questions of life, and searches for a better place.’(Wikipedia), this is the synopsis of the film ‘Permanent Vacation’ (1980) by Jim Jarmusch who was mentioned last week in the “inspiration” post. I watched this movie last weekend and I love it which is as simple as the the synopsis, but it is so realistic and deepth. I prefer the dancing scene of the main character which is also made in the cover of film, as the photo and video posted above. Therefore, I know why people love Jim Jarmusch now.

Because I needed to write APA paper about a hero in my field last week, I think I wanted to write him, Jim Jarmusch, who is famous independent film director in the U.S., but I did not. I like independent film which is free in creating, but I don’t have chance to watch his movies. I known him by my university’s professor who also like independent film. Therefore, I plan to watch his movies this weekend. Accroding to my research, ‘Jim Jarmusch is the last major truly independent film director in America. This is not a statement about his sensibility, although it is true that his minimalist cinematic style and his ability to deftly cross-pollinate pop culture, Eastern philosophy and classic movie genres have made him a unique presence in film for the past 20 years.’‘Nearly always, if a filmmaker’s first, independent effort meets with either box-office or critical success (or both), he will be seduced into the studio system, where financing is provided in exchange for some measure of creative freedom. But despite Jarmusch’s early star-is-born success and many offers from Hollywood, he has remained stubbornly distanced from the studios and their deep pockets.’ (Hirschberg, 2005)
