How does Gas Detection Tubes Work?

If you've been doing any kind of gas detection at work, you've probably heard of colored tubes. However, they all do the same job: they instantly measure polluted air.

What are Gastec Tubes? How does it work?

Colorimetric test tubes are graduated glass tubes filled with chemicals that change color when exposed to related gases.

It is used with a hand pump to draw an air sample into the tube. The tubes are closed at both ends when removed from the package.

To test, break the end of the tube and insert the tube into the pump. How do they work? As the air in the tube rises, it reacts with the reagents inside, resulting in a color change.

The duration of the color change is proportional to the concentration of the gas concentration.

What are the advantages of gas detection tubes?

For field technicians working remotely from a support facility, coor tubes can offer tremendous advantages. There is no need for calibration, which eliminates the need for all the support equipment needed to allow the tube to be used in the field. The ability to install and maintain a gas detector system in the field often makes it a good choice over electronic alternatives, especially when measurements at a particular location are required.
