Amor Towles new novel, set in 1954, follows a foursome of rowdy kids (some freshly released from reform school) who pile into a beat-up Studebaker and hit the road in search of a better life. Critic Heller McAlpin calls it "a joyride ... hitch onto this delightful tour de force and you'll be pulled straight through to the end, helpless against the inventive exuberance of Towles' storytelling." If you only know George Orwell as the dyspeptic, dystopian creator of Animal Farm and 1984, you should absolutely pick up Rebecca Solnit's new Orwell's Roses, which takes the rose garden Orwell planted at a rented cottage in 1936 as a jumping-off point to explore all kinds of questions. "For example," writes reviewer Ilana Masad, "What was 1936 like politically, socially, and economically in England? Where was Orwell in his career then? Or: What did his given name signify and what history did it carry? What significance lay in his chosen nom de plume that over time was used by friends and family as well? And even: What does it mean to plant roses?"

Michael Lewis's new The Premonition is a sweeping indictment of the CDC's response to COVID-19 -- and a paean to the public health officers fighting on the pandemic's front lines.
Lewis says he reached out to the CDC for comment on his reporting, but they wouldn't speak to him.
"So what I did was guerilla journalism," he tells Morning Edition's Rachel Martin. "I interviewed individuals who were willing to talk to me either on background or off the record. And a couple people were on the record. But the CDC itself, I was told would not — didn't want to talk to me."
Hear the whole conversation here!

“A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading.”

Last night was exactly what I needed. Dinner with friends and then evening relaxing, reading, and eating key lime flavored desserts.

5/11 Book Deals
Good morning, everyone! I hope you are having a nice morning so far. :) I am feeling a bit better this morning, thanks to those of you who reached out, it means a lot! On another note, can you guys believe that we’re already almost halfway through May?? I have no idea what’s going on with time lately, and I’m not sure how I feel about it… How are you guys all doing so far this year?
Now, on to the books–let’s talk about the fact that there are a ton of awesome books on sale today! There’s quite a nice variety of fiction/fantasy/nonfiction, so be sure to have a look if you’re in the market for some new books. :) I’m personally pretty interested in Nghi Vo’s duology, and The Unspoken Name was pretty enjoyable when I read it last year!
Anyway, I hope you all have a truly wonderful day, and happy reading!
