REMOVING AN OIL BASED POMADE

It’s no secret that an oil based pomade is harder to remove!  So why would you use one anyway?  Well, in my opinion they look better in the hair, they don’t dry out, I can re-style throughout the day with ease and they leave my hair and scalp feeling much healthier.  They also save me a fortune in cash, as I don’t use anywhere near as much as I do as with a water based.  Don’t get me wrong, I still use water based pomades (as mentioned below) and love the ease with which you can wash them out (Apothecary 87′s Manitoba pomade, JS Sloane’s medium hold, Layrite, Reuzel red and Tip Top are all excellent water based pomades and I recommend you try them all!).

Everyone has their own view and regimes how to remove them; some involve expensive scrub shampoos, old school techniques or weird and wonderful combinations of products.  Oil based products build up over the week in the hair so you really want to be stripping the hair at some point to keep things nice and fresh.  I have two ways, neither involve the use of anything harsh in the hair, here they are along with the products I use:

Clean pomade free hair, day 1 - Apply full amount of oil based pomade into clean, pomade free, washed and blow dried hair.  Style hair as desired.

Day 2 and 3 - Shampoo hair with a decent regular shampoo (Tresemme Deep Cleansing shampoo is great) , pat dry with a towel then blow dry, top up oil based pomade with a smaller amount than day 1 then style (this is where the money saving comes in as you will not need to use as much pomade as some will be left in after washing).

Day 4 - apply Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Moisture Deep Treatment conditioner into dry hair and leave for 5 minutes.  After 5 mins, rinse out in the shower and shampoo as normal.  This will have most, if not all the pomade out of your hair, if not, repeat the shampooing.

Day 5 - back to day 1 and start all over again.

So that’s the first way, it takes a bit longer, but if I am in a rush and can’t sit with the conditioner in the hair I use the way below which involves a water based pomade.

Clean, pomade free hair, Day 1 - Apply full amount of oil based pomade into clean, pomade free, washed and blow dried hair.  Style hair as desired.

Day 2 and 3 - Same as above; shampoo hair with a decent regular shampoo (Tresemme Deep Cleansing shampoo is great) , pat dry with a towel then blow dry, top up oil based pomade with a smaller amount than day 1 then style (this is where the money saving comes in as you will not need to use as much pomade as some will be left in after washing).

Day 4 - same as day 2 and 3, but instead of applying a top up with an oil based pomade, I use a good water based pomade.  I apply this into the hair when it is still damp.  The water based pomade seems to break down the remains of any oil based pomade and washes out dead easy the following morning.

Day 5 - Wash hair as normal.  Your hair will now be completely pomade free, feeling fresh and ready to go again.

Following a regime and keeping your hair fresh and clean will help keep it in top condition and your scalp healthy.
