Fromer is our retired working dog. He used to find cell phones. Not too many cell phone dogs out there. Here he's wearing his thunder shirt. Fromer was in Afghanistan for a couple of years and the loud noises get to him. #plano #northtexas #workingdog (at Plano, Texas)

Collin County, 2016. Cotton used to be a major crop in North Texas. Hundreds of thousands of acres were grown here when I was a boy and several cotton gins were in operation in the area to process the cotton. A Cotton Gin is a machine that separates the seeds from the cotton fibers. Disease build up, including cotton root rot, pretty much killed the industry in recent decades.
This year, though, I’ve seen several fields return to cotton production. Looks like they might make a decent crop. The pictures above show a cotton bloom, a cotton boll that forms after pollenation, and the cotton boll once it opens. I’ve always thought that the unopened bolls look like Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors :)
I grow cotton plants in containers on my deck every couple of years because I think it makes an attractive plant and the flowers/bolls are pretty. I’ll pick the cotton at the end of summer and store the seeds until the next year - or whenever I get the urge to plant it again. The cotton flower picture above is actually a plant that my Father grew in his flowerbed this year.
