rory was sweating bullets eating their second cup of chili while their grandpa made the rounds. they knew that he was sad knowing that richie wasn't here to participate like he usually was. rory had tried to rein in their feelings about the whole thing knowing that richie had been the one to leave but today wasn't about the woes of dysfunctional family but to make today a memorable one for everyone else, their grandpa included. they had sat back for a moment wiping the sweat with the back of their hand. the food was always their favourite part and this year was no different. having seen someone walking over towards them they had tried to give back the gentle smile but ended up laughing. "that man will take their chili recipe to his grave," they got up from their seat and walked over towards the big crockpot of chili knowing that they had another one on standby. "been perfecting it with his buddies the last couple of days and swear this is the best one yet." they wipe their hands on their pants and fist bump them back before leaning against the table. "oh shit, that's you? that's sick, i'm always happy to see more establishments opening up in this place," aside from joja of course, but they were going to keep that to themselves for now.
status: closed w @greers location: at one of the food tables The last time Renzie had visited the Greery Carpentry, old Joe Greer happened to be there. He'd filled Ren with great excitement over the upcoming Flower Dance. Stories about first loves, romping dances - and most importantly for the old fellow, great food. Grandpa had assured Ren that the specialty dish he was making this year would be the best he'd ever make. Renzie would have to try it.
What else could Ren do to promise he would? He really liked the cut of Grandpa Joe's jib. Practically an establishment himself in Thistleberry, it seemed.
So the Flower Dance came around, and Renzie had an empty plate as he perused the food table, searching for Grandpa Joe's specialty dish. Had to be here somewhere. The old man was so darn proud.
Instead of the infamous dish, Renzie found Rory - the next closest thing to Grandpa Joe, in name anyway. Renzie hadn't gotten to acquainted with them yet, but maybe now was his chance, so he offered a hello smile.
"Hey - it's Rory, right? I'm Renzie Anand. Uh, Acosta-Anand. New owner of the Creature Comforts Café," he held his hand out for a fistbump...which might be totally cringe for kids these days, but whatever. "Say - your Grandpa was talking up his special dish at the dance, think you could point me in its direction?"

before rory went off to school they would always get roped into their grandpa joe's chili making contest that he would have with a couple of his buddies, it was a tradition that their kids and grandkids would get to try it first to determine's who's chili was the best, and it came to no surprise that it was always grandpa joe's. swore that all he did was put enough love and spice to it, and rory had to believe that it was true. it had always been their favourite time of year when the seasons would start to change, how it was a game out of richie and rory to see who could get the best chili peppers from their grandpas vegetable garden out back. rory always won because they didn't care what it took to win and richie would always somehow end up having rory in a headlock but they are the kind of memories that rory misses the most now that richie is... gone. they had thought that maybe foolishly richie would show up to surprise their grandpa in time for his chili cook off, the chili that they would bring to the flower dance that everyone loved but they never did. it was a quiet affair, the same people that always came were just a bit more quieter than usual. rory made their flower crown with one of the great-grandkids help and put an outfit together and would sit with their grandpa like they used to always do. it would be rory's first flower dance back since the last time they left and if they were honest, they were nervous. after all this would be the first time that greer carpentry was under rory's management and they didn't want to let their grandpa and richie down.

it was their grandpa's favourite time of year, the changing of the seasons and the flower dance, having always made some kind of dish for the potluck that he was very proud of. most of their dinners together were met over silence these days. they felt tired but enjoyed seeing their neighbours enjoying themselves. they had a plate they were guarding like a dragon and only vaguely listening to elio before seeing a hand stretched out towards them. rory raises an eyebrow. "i just corked down like three mini weenies with some of that onion soup, i think if you throw me around the dance floor... well, fuck it."
where: the flower dance when: afternoon with: open
"Man, I haven't been to one of these things in ages," Elio comments, gesturing expansively at the festival, eyes bright with warmth as he takes in the scene in front of him. As far as he's concerned, this is one of the things small towns do best - he loves that these tight-knit communities will find any excuse to come together, and how often that excuse involves some kind of celebration. If only Joja hadn't gotten involved, their stall a blue blemish on the sand that Elio is taking great pains to avoid making eye contact with.
"Say, you want to dance? I swear not to step on your toes," he jokes, smile wide as he offers his hand.

rory greer
“and i ended a friendship on the day that i left, and though i really meant it, it still makes me upset am i losin' my family every minute i’m gone? what if my little brother thinks my leaving was wrong?” right now, gracie abarams.

character inspos: john bender ( the breakfast club ), selina kyle ( batman ), steven hyde ( that 70’s show ), patrick verona ( 10 things i hate about you ), boromir ( lord of the rings ), alex karev ( greys anatomy ), steve harrington ( stranger things ), eleanor shellstrop ( the good place ), ferris bueller ( ferris buellers day off )
tw: brother goes missing, dysfunctional family
rory’s parents were never meant to be parents, that’s what their grandpa joe used to say as he watched his grandchildren at the back of the shop whenever rory asked too many questions. they were a curious child and lacked something that many kids their age seemed to have. it didn’t feel like a loss, not in the way that it did for richie. but rory wouldn’t realize this until much later.
it’s easy being in a constant state of survival if you don’t realize that you’re in it in the first place. grandpa joe gave them the best life that he could, it’s not easy tailing after a rambunctious child and their gloomy older brother who’s got a permanent eyebrow raised to the sky as they look down at their younger sibling. whenever rory got hurt their brother was always there to pick them up off of the ground.
their grandpa joe had the greery carpentry business for as long as he’s been in town ( so must of his life, rory would say with an eyeroll to anyone that asked ). there was a time when he thought that he would pass it on to his son but his son skipped out right when rory was born but richie never had the kind of dreams that rory did and was prepped to take over the company when their grandpa couldn't.
when rory graduated they left to new york city and climbed the social latter and met the right people, they got their degree and traveled across the world with their camera by their side. they had a natural charm of listening to people and getting them to open up about things, it’s what made them superb at their job. whenever they came back home richie hardly talked to them until they had their big fallout when rory turned twenty-six.
richie called them selfish and cruel. rory called him a pushover and people pleaser. for two siblings that relied solely on each other growing up this was the kind of fight that wasn't easy to forgive. despite their grandpa trying his best, rory left back to new york, and they stopped talking to each other until about a year ago when their grandpa joe asked if richie was with rory. he wasn’t.
rory moved back and took their brother’s place at the shop, they have no idea what they’re doing. they have their grandfather’s help from time to time but it’s hard to ask your grandpa for help when it feels like you’re the reason that your brother is gone.
other things:
look it looks like they don’t know what they’re doing and like... partially but they have grown up in the shop for all their life so they are not useless it’s just... they haven’t been around much to get to know their customers but they do their best
grandpa joe is a grandpa to all as far as im concerned
honestly... rory doesn’t mean to be cruel or selfish it’s just a defense mechanism and i don’t even think they’re cruel or selfish just sometimes a little flighty -- richie hit a low blow in the fight and rory has been spiralling about it ever since
they probably do some freelance with their major. but they’ve probably given up on their actual career by the time they came back
they’re a good photographer tho.. just it’s now a hobby than it is a job , they used to travel all over the world to work on journalistic pieces so coming back home to a slower life is... kind of terrifying
they’re annoying bc they’re naturally talented and p much are able to pick up anything easily
looking for old best friends , etc
