Usually, Mouse was careful about giving into the parts of himself that he hated. He stuck to energy drinks with too much caffeine and an occasional beer instead of going back to the heroin and the pills. He kept his hook ups to the weekend, when it wouldn’t affect his work schedule. He always set an alarm so that he could be dressed and out of whatever apartment he’d ended up in before his partner for the night woke up and tried to convince him to stay in bed for another round. Or worse - made him breakfast.

But that routine could only work so many times before he slipped up.

He’d taken a Tylenol, of all things - one tablet, half a dose - to try to ignore a screen induced headache from a long day. It wasn’t enough to do anything, not even enough to dull the ache behind his eyes, but taking one pill was enough to shake some habits loose. Instead of going straight home, like he should have, and taking the last bottle from a six pack from the back of his fridge, he’d ended up at a bar. One pill, one whiskey, that was all it took for the fire in his gut to wake up again. That was how he’d ended up in an unfamiliar bed on a Wednesday morning, his phone’s battery too drained for his alarm to even go off, scrambling to find his underwear before he was any later to work than he already was.

“You can’t take a day off? Or be late? Just this once?”

“I really can’t.”

The hookups were supposed to just be hookups. No emotions, no feelings, no attachments. It kept him from aching over the thought of who he wanted to be in bed with, as if a decade of pining could actually have little to no bearing on who he took to bed. Or who he let take him to bed, depending on the day. They were meant to be distractions, just enough to quiet the demons he’d inherited for a few weeks at a time so he could go about his life. Interaction the morning after was what he tried to avoid the most, because it meant it wasn’t a distraction anymore, just something that haunted him and ate up more of his quickly dwindling morning.
