Title: Adam Binder
Author: David R. Slayton
Series or standalone: series
Publication year: 2020
Genres: fiction, fantasy, LGBT+, paranormal, romance
Blurb: Guthrie was a good place to be from, but it wasn't a great place to live...not when you were like Adam. Adam Binder hasn't spoken to his brother in years, not since Bobby had him committed to a psych ward for hearing voices. When a murderous spirit possesses Bobby's wife and disrupts the perfect life he's built away from Oklahoma, he's forced to ask for his little brother's help. Adam is happy to escape the trailer park and get the chance to say "I told you so"...but he arrives in Denver to find the local magicians dead. It isn't long before Adam is the spirit's next target. To survive the confrontation, he'll have to risk bargaining with powers he'd rather avoid, including his first love: the elf who broke his heart. The Binder brothers don't realise that they're unwitting pawns in a game played by immortals. Death herself wants the spirit's head, and she's willing to destroy their family to reap it.

Honestly I should talk about the ace experience more. I don’t see enough. Like–obviously it’s dehumanizing to be repeatedly compared to robots or aliens but uh…sometimes it feels like that??
My husband will get all horny while I’m, I don’t know, changing out of sweaty gardening clothes. And I’ll be like, “But we have to make lunch?? I stink? Now is not a good time?? Logic?” And clearly it’s not about logic to him. He is experiencing the entire scenario very differently. And I’m here like,
Tumblr media
Or the times where you realize that like, having an actual physiological reaction to attractive people is not some enculturated metaphor, and people are actually doing that all around you all the time, and you’re like, Ah, clearly my studies of human culture have been incomplete. I have missed a critical psychosocial component. Many things now appear in a different light. *takes notes on holopad*

This a a reminder to not fall victim to the sunk-cost fallacy. Just because you invested time and energy into something, does not mean you should indefinitely waste more time and energy on it, if you decide it’s not what you want anymore. This goes for anything, from books, to relationships, to jobs, to hobbies, etc.
If it’s not serving you anymore, move on.

just another reason to add to my list of "I dont trust reviews" the secret lives of country gentlemen sets up a misunderstanding plot between two dudes who have already slept together in the first chapter and makes that resolution not feel forced or awkward. It's a fantastic book where both the characters actually have to learn how to trust and grow. The strong one has to learn how to depend on the skinny ex clerk who by the by also kicked that one dude to protect him!!! I will hear no shade!!!
I finished The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen today and went immediately over to Storygraph to write a review, was surprised it only averaged 4 stars because it's perfect, read the other reviews, and ran into two things that floored me.
1) Complaint that there was too much smuggling and it overwhelmed the romance plot. For illustration, if you haven't read the book, this is like complaining that there was too much piracy in OFMD. Like saying, "couldn't 'you wear fine things well' have come after any random day, instead of after the French party boat?" I really try to temper my response to romance fandom but it is genuinely hard for me sometimes when people request that the entire book just be the two leads interacting with each other socially and having misunderstandings for conflict. (Saw the same thing with Winter's Orbit, never getting over it.)
2) Complaint that the book plays into a bad trope by being m/m where one character tends to protect the other. When one character protecting another is one of the sexiest things ever! When m/f gets to designate one character as The Physically Strong One! When it's perfectly reasonable that the smuggler king is better at fighting than the skinny ex-clerk who never stands up for himself!

the thing about the mummy movies is that you really spend most of the time thinking "wow brendan fraser's character is so cool" or "man oded fehr is so mysterious and heroic" when the fact of the matter is that these two
Tumblr media
are the absolute most batshit insane heroes in the entire franchise
these two are intellectual loner siblings with archeology backgrounds who read and speak ancient egyptian, hire a dude directly out of prison to take them to a lost city of gold, and fight mummies literally with their bare hands. twice.
no one in these movies stands a chance against the carnahans. frankly they're lethal in how willing they are to make the absolute and most undeniably deranged decisions. jonathan pickpockets a dude on fire. evy's resurrected from the dead and immediately remembers how to use sai. they're racking shotguns from a cliff in this scene and then proceed to blow away half the antagonists.
rick and ardeth should be so lucky
