that said i do feel for laios so much in this situation. if i had a giddy schoolgirl crush on a guy who was in love with my sister and then in a fit of pique he admitted that he actually couldn’t stand my annoying ass for reasons that are genuinely horrifying to hear recontextualized when in your mind you were just being sociable and a good friend, and you didn’t notice that he was pissed off because you were just too happy to be spending time with him ….. yeah i think my heart would shatter a little too .
oh and also. i have literally never seen a more intricate ritual constructed in my life btw. esp for laios i feel like fingers in mouth must be some kind of gesture of existential import. “you should use your mouth more” like bro?????????
before we meet toshiro i also assumed i was gonna hate him bc he’s some. heterosexual man tryna steal marcille’s girl. and that stoic vibe is generally unappealing to me (on men, at least). i thought he was gonna have a smug aura, and i can’t stand a smug aura. but he doesn’t position himself as better than laios or anything like that, like he even admits that he envies laios. he’s just depressed & repressed & kind of lost. but then again, i also thought i was gonna hate chilchuck because i can’t stand a precocious child in a group of adults who is somehow so wise for his age that it’s fine that theyre just letting this ten year old tag along in a highly dangerous situation. so i guess my point is. appearances can be deceiving.
toshiro is also autistic and clearly envies how much laios doesn't mask and is able to say whatever he's thinking outright (he literally says so after their fight). and he was raised as like a minor lord or whatever in feudal japan so he learned to mask early on and that combination of masking + raised in a high-context culture + being in a foreign land with different etiquette means that he'll go through herculean levels of discomfort to not upset any perceived group balance and only snaps when he's like three days away from dropping dead. which is also something he sees in falin btw and is a big reason why he's drawn to her. imo
when i started dunmeshi considering the theme of consuming and being consumed and a sort of coy welll what do YOU consider cannibalism tone were both immediately established i was just like ok so before the end of this a party member is getting torn apart and eated. and considering chilchuck doesn’t get characterised until a little later the early party is 1. guy who cooks 2. girl whos reticent but likes the food 3. guy whos extremely hungry and 4. Fourth Party Member. Other. i was counting his days
i will always support the haters and the cunts and the miserable depressed fucks and the sopping wet pathetic idiots of the world. pissed off and bitchy and suicidal and suffering endlessly. and if they bully a blond man, well, that’s just a bonus.
toshiro doesn’t actually hate laios, he resents that laios seemingly gets away with being oblivious and forward and persistent and strange. like he says, he envies him, wishes that he was in a position to be more like him. he doesn’t understand laios well enough to know that he’s faced his own set of struggles, so in his mind laios is simply happy in ways toshiro was never allowed to be, just being himself. he thinks that by forsaking his own safety and comfort he is doing something noble, and laios makes him look kind of stupid by being like “actually if you don’t communicate your desires and don’t take care of your body and eat well, you’ll be of no use to anyone.” but toshiro actually acknowledges that and vows to prioritize himself, realizing that he also has the capacity to do for himself what he envies in laios. his frustration with laios is one of envy, not hatred, but it appears that way when laios pushes his limits. toshiro is already on the brink, and laios is hurtling him off a cliff with no attention paid to the edge or the steep drop beneath. and yet, even if toshiro sincerely did hate laios (which he doesn’t!), that would be okay too, because sometimes you can just dislike someone, and that’s normal, that’s a normal part of life. it doesn’t make you evil or cruel. not everyone is going to like everyone you like, and you’re not a bad person if you meet someone who rubs you the wrong way, either. it’s fine.
