I bet if a mushroom could lap water out of your hand with a tongue that a gently drinking mushroom tongue on your hand would be the softest and gentlest thing.

Ummmmmm I will put a disclaimer here that my goal was just to DO it and not do it well or pretty so your mileage may vary lol
I did do a swatch first and that helped learn the basics for sure but I'm not sure that not doing one first is unwearable. I do recommend worsted weight or above and larger needles (I prefer circular needles bc DPNs still intimidate me) but NOT metal needles!! The yarn slips off so fast and you're gonna drop stitches enough already without the metal needle helping. Tight knitting makes it harder to work with non-metal needle-size wise but if anything it helped me realize just how tight I was knitting and what properly loose knitting should be.
Overall though I enjoyed starting with socks because I learned a variety of techniques in one go. The hardest thing that im still not 100% sure I grasp was the heel so maybe have someone (even if its your local fiber arts store) help you through it because it doesn't take long it's just complicated.
Oh and don't worry about doing the math about stitches just measure against your actual feet.
These are what I ended up with but I used the pattern @stitchnknit already had available (and I think I borrowed their needles? Not sure what size but they were the same wooden circular style I use now)

If someone wanted to get into knitting but all they were really interested in knitting (for now) is socks, what kinds/sizes of knitting needles would be the best to get? (I have already looked this topic up a bit but also wanted fiber arts tumblr and mutual suggestions.)
Also... is it even realistic to get into learning to knit with socks specifically? I just unfortunately don't really have any interest in knitting other things currently...

While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a slapping,
As of some one gently flapping, flapping at my chamber door.
“’Tis some fairy,” I muttered, “slapping at my chamber door—
Only this and nothing more.”
