Alex wanted to prepare something reasonably healthy, so he went with a hearty mushroom casserole, perfect for the vibe of the potluck. He bought all the necessary ingredients and got to work in the kitchen. However, upon chopping up all the mushrooms, he realised that he’d grown so used to cooking for one that he hadn’t bought enough. 

With a sudden stroke of genius, he went into his back garden and picked some mushrooms he’d seen the previous day sprouting under a tree. The damp conditions made for a great yield! He chopped these up too and added them to his dish. 

Tatsu chose: POISONOUS

Alex showed up in a beige loose-fitting shirt and matching hat, accompanied by traditional blue jeans and a chunky buckle belt. It was a classic Alex blend; fit the theme well enough that he wouldn’t stand out, but low-effort enough that he still looked cool.

Well, he thought so, anyway.

Leah caught the ball on her knee and bounced it a couple of times before launching it back his way. “Oh? That’s good- keeping busy and active at work is best, I can’t imagine having a desk job. Sitting all day……bleh. How do you like the sports centre?”

“I completely agree,” he said, as he jogged backwards to put himself in position for where the ball was heading. “I can’t think of anything worse.” He volleyed the ball with his fist back towards her. 

“The sports centre is great, but it’s become less popular recently. When I was a kid, it was the place to be, but I guess kids these days are more into their technology. Ha! Listen to me! I sound like my grandpa!” He laughed to himself with a shake of the head.

Even though she missed she grinned at Alex’s comment. It was good!

Tina managed to dodge his next attack.

“Right back atcha!” She said with a small laugh.

She moved in closer this time and tried another kick.

Tatsu chose: MISS

Hmph. She missed again. This was a tough fight.

Alex lurched backwards as her foot came up, but luckily, she was short and so was her range. The fight was lasting longer than usual, but that was good. It meant that they were both around the same level, which meant that she was rapidly improving...

Tatsu chose: HIT

... but not rapidly enough. Whilst she was unbalanced from her kick attempt, her swiped at her other leg and sent her to the ground. “Don’t leave yourself vulnerable to balance attacks,” he advised.

“Ah!” Tina let out in surprise when she was hit.

She quickly regained herself and put her arms back in the proper position, “Right!”

Not wanting to move her arms from their current position, as she’d just gotten hit below them, she decided to use her legs. Keep her arms defensive, legs offensive. Tina tried to kick Alex but,

She missed! Frustrating! To have just been landed on and to not land one herself.

Alex, being much taller than Tina, had the disadvantage that he couldn’t fully see her legs. However, when he realised that she was about to use that to her own advantage, distracting him with her defensive stance, he managed to step back in time for her to fail. Fortunately, her legs were short, so she couldn’t get much reach. 

“Good tactic,” he commended her, “but not good enough!” 

Tatsu chose: MISS

On the last word, he swung for her, but she sidestepped it. He nodded approvingly.

Pelican or Pelican’t? | Pam & Alex

Ah, yes. Pam remembered that Evelyn was somewhat older than herself, although it didn’t really hit her just how much that was until now. Evelyn was so easy to relate to and interesting to talk to that Pam just assumed that she was maybe five, ten, or fifteen at the most years older than her. But that was a massive understatement. After another drink from her glass taken during her reflection, she then also remembered George. He wasn’t what Pam would call hospitable- at least not to the same degree as Evelyn- but they seemed to get along and compliment one another well. At least she found someone right for her, Pam’d think.  “Give’m my regards when you see them again, alright? It must be rough to have to stay inside.” She mused, half talking to Alex and half talking to herself. “And, uh, if she’s got the time, I’d love to chat a bit with her again.”  Suddenly, she realized there was a bit of an problem. She’d forgotten all about Alex while talking with him! She’d rectify that after one last gulp of water. “So, uh, what d’you do, kid? You seem pretty strong- logging, maybe?”

He dug out his phone from his pocket. “Well, I could give you her number if you like,” he said, searching his contacts. He’d convinced his grandmother to get a phone only recently so that they could stay in contact between his visits. She rarely used it, only calling him to ask him to pick something up on his way to their house. He was sure that he’d be glad to hear from an old friend. 

Pleased by her compliment -- he’d still been a weedy little kid when she’d last seen him -- he shook his head. “I own the Castanet Gym and the Stadium and Sports Centre.” He puffed his chest up subconsciously with pride. As a child, he never would have imagined owning two businesses.

Leah grinned and put her things down. “Yeah, sure, let’s so that,” she agreed. “It’d be nice to just mess around a bit.” She moved away from the path so it was less likely another bystander might risk a headshot. “No job yet?” she asked, making sure her hair was out of the way.

He used his knee to bump the ball up above his head and caught it easily with two hands. “Nice!” he said, jogging backwards to put some distance between them. It wouldn’t be much fun if it was little more than passing the ball back and forth. He stopped a few paces back, figuring that if it was too easy, he would just move back more with each successful catch. 

“Job? Oh, I actually work at the gym and the sports centre,” he said, tossing the ball to her in an easy arc for their first pass. “When I said I do anything active, I meant in career too!”

Pelican or Pelican’t? | Pam & Alex

Pam had known of her status as an urban legend among the children through Penny, but just a small part of it. Since her relationship with Penny had been anything but stable, Pam would rarely listen too closely to her words. It was all a bit of a drunken haze in Pam’s mind, but she remembered one particular comment from Penny about Pam’s rare outside excursions garnering her an almost-mythical reputation. She only remembered it because it was the first time Penny had ever talked back to Pam in a snarky tone. Pam’s face visibly twitched as memories flushed back to her. After coming back to her senses, she passed over her drink to the bartender, asking for water instead of beer. She’d need a clearer head for this, which beer could not provide. “In the flesh, kid.” She said, a salty grin going ear to ear covering her face. She took a hearty sip of her new glass of water to clear her senses. “How is Evelyn doing, anyways? I’ve not had the chance to catch up with her since I left Pelican Town.”

Alex watched, confused, as the lady appeared to change her mind on her drink choice and handed her beer back to the bartender, opting for water instead. Although he had been young at the time, he had heard murmurs from adults in Pelican Town about Pam’s problems, but it hadn’t really registered until this moment that they may have been to do with alcohol. That would explain why she’d rarely been seen during the day. 

“Oh, she’s, uh, fine,” he said, taking a deep sip from his beer. “Well, she’s struggling to get out much any more. She had George, so she’s fine, but I think it can get a little lonely. I try to visit them every week to make it a little better, though...” 

He knew they wouldn’t be around forever, and he refused to take them for granted. He had taken his mother for granted.

TL;DR: Alex shows Iluka that he de-stoned the island. Then he shows her a field of wildflowers he found on top of the mountain. It's super romantic… What if he tried to kiss her? 

Also, upon returning from this trip, Alex will be reporting to the Explorer’s Guild that Spring Island is now back to normal after some idiot petrified it! 

Thanks to Alex righting his wrong, the Spring Island is now back to normal!

TL;DR: Alex takes Agate to Spring Island where she uses her tree-hugging Earthmate powers to restore the island. They then frolic in the greenery and talk about their definitely-not relationships. Alex will definitely be taking credit for fixing the island.

Leah nodded. “Fair enough. I hunt a fair bit, but I do some taming as well, and that can be lucrative. And handy if you need backup out there.” She watched him with the ball. “Soooo……ball and tourney combat. Interesting combination you picked. What else do you do?”

He’d heard that there were people out there who tamed monsters, but he had never tried it. He was more of a punch first, ask questions later kind of guy. That made it difficult to befriend monsters. 

“Anything active that I can,” he said in response, continuing to kick the ball up. “Hey, speaking of which, you don’t wanna play catch or something, do ya?”
