One of my photos went viral on Reddit last night (is “went viral” still the proper lingo or do I sound like a tool?). It was the picture of me sitting on the couch with Hannah looking at me in excitement. I posted it to celebrate this new ability that I’ve gained back because of the treatment I’m getting called Spinraza.
Great. Neat. Awesome.
For Reddit standards, a surprisingly large majority of the 700ish comments were very supportive and positive.
But as I suspected, a small group of people couldn’t resist anonymously picking on how outrageous my body looks. Many people asked politely why I look the way I do, but others just ragged on me, attempting to be funny (“Why on earth would you bend your wrists like that?”). More disheartening were the comments that suggested my relationship with Hannah must be the result of her feeling pity for me. Thankfully, most of the insulting comments were deleted by the moderators.
Seeing these kinds of ideas flourishing out there in the world bothers me more and more each year, and they’re so difficult to combat because the only logical response is: “Uh she’s not pitying me at all. I’m smart and funny and successful. Having a disability like mine doesn’t necessitate pity.” But I never feel comfortable engaging in that manner since I’m basically just tooting my own horn.
This was Hannah’s first big experience with this kind of ignorant behavior, but she handled it with humor and grace.
When my next book comes out next April (Strangers Assume My Girlfriend Is My Nurse) I hope it makes a small difference in how people see disability and love/intimacy/relationships.
