Sadly, this is what happens when greed wins over a community’s needs. A favorite grocery store in my neighborhood closed to make way for luxury condos, leaving the hundreds of senior citizens living in the nearby buildings with nowhere to go for convenient food (and the shelves eerily empty as the store cleared out). Most locals have the mobility to walk to alternative stores a bit further away from the area, but what are the seniors going to do? The store is hoping to reopen when the construction is over….in three whole years. Even the ultra-rich need grocery stores, and in fact, they’ll probably be pretty pissed when they realize those fancy condos they paid top dollar for are now nowhere near fresh food.
