Obvious trigger warning for Kira content. I talk a lot about paraphilias and psychology here. I get into Kira's specific class of necrophilia, his obsessive-compulsive and autistic tendencies, and other parts of his psyche. Because I'm tired of people talking about his hand fetish and partialism like he isn't a necrophile too.

Introduction + Expository Ramble + Special Interest-Induced Yap & Shameless Promotion of my own Theories

I don't think necrophilia itself needs an explanation or definition in this case. Hello freaks and weirdos. I know you're there. I'd like to introduce my thoughts regarding the paraphilia itself. First, I want to talk about the uncanny valley effect. The Uncanny Valley refers to the "valley," or discomfort in things that are "almost human," such as hyperrealistic robots or zombies. Many, including myself, believe that this mechanism was developed to avoid pathogens from heavily diseased individuals or corpses. (Moosa, 2010)

While it's enticing to think about a paleo-horror archaic human species triggering this response, it's much more realistic to conclude that this was evolved to avoid disease and danger. So, by extension, this makes me think that the act of necrophilia goes against the grain of thousands of years of lived human evolution! Where the primal instincts of our brains are supposed to send off warning signs of danger, danger, danger, it either doesn't or the pilot of said brain ignores it entirely. Biology says: Please do not touch the dead body. In fact, do not approach the dead body at all. Bad idea! This, I think, gives Kira irony to his character. He's so dead-set on what I like to call his "normalcy fetish," a term I use for the internalized desire to be normal despite obvious abnormality, except everything he does goes directly against that on the very biopsychosocial level.

Kira's Class of Necrophilia & What it Means

Necrophilia is classified in many ways, but I personally use the Aggrawal tier system and the Cold/Warm/Destructive/Preservative system. The Aggrawal system has 10 tiers, 1 being role-playing, and 10 being exclusive necrophilia. The Cold/Warm/Destructive/Preservative system is a descriptor for how the necrophile interacts with the corpse. Cold/Warm describes the duration (is the corpse revisited for a longer period of time after death, or is it only right after death?) and Destructive/Preservative describes if the corpse is mutilated or kept in a certain condition.

In Kira's case, this makes him a Class V Cold/Preservative necrophile. Class V, or fetishistic necrophiliacs, will take souvenirs off the dead body, almost never interacting with the entire body itself. (Well. He vaporizes them. So whatever.) His cheirophilic partialism renders him exactly this.

Possible psychological reasons for this class/type vary. The most common motivation for necrophilia lies in the desire to have a non-resisting partner or to exert power over something. While I think that fits Kira, I also am led to believe that his motivation also lies within feelings of social inadequacy and stunted emotional development.

The Good Part of the Essay (IDK what to title this)

I talk a lot about neurodevelopmental stuff here. I am autistic myself, obviously having autism or stunted social development doesn't make you a serial killer, but these parts are key to understanding Kira's character. Sometimes people misread things, so I felt the need to clarify. Kira is a serial killer because he kills people. Not because of a fetish or any developmental issue, but these things DO impact his behavior as it would anyone.

Let's get some historical context and connections as to why I think this is a viable motive. I cite A Rose for Emily, in which Emily Grierson is implied to have poisoned, killed, and kept the body of a man she loved in her house. She dressed him up and cleaned him and slept next to his corpse until he rotted. After he started stinking and falling apart, Emily killed herself. In my personal opinion, Emily's necrophilia was a product of her emotional stuntedness and poor socialization due to her sheltered upbringing and lifestyle. (I have a seperate essay on this exact topic I did for school, but it's stuck with me haha) (Me, 2024)

hee hoo here's a small bit of the essay relevant to what I'm talking about so read if you'd like. just gives a little background as to what I'm talking about :D In order to keep himself safe and undiscovered, Kira was noted to have masked from a very young age. He kept to himself, he was sheltered, his parents died while he was relatively young. He likely didn't get the social stimulation needed for a child, teen, or young adult. This and a fetish brouht out at such a young age would be the perfect storm to create a socially inept adult hyperfocused on his desires and keeping them his. Not to mention the way his father talks about him like a little golden boy. That reinforcement certainly didn't help Kira become a model citizen. I think this is why Kira approaches relationships the way he does. He has been shown to be very socially awkward and even underdeveloped. There were scenes with Shinobu Kawajiri where he remains silent for an unnatural amount of time, even when she presses him for a response. Specifically, right after he kills Hayato in the bathroom, Shinobu tries to speak to him for several panels while he stands there, giving her no response. If that isn't a verbal shutdown, I don't know what is. He's killed people before and has been able to talk to himself or a disembodied hand, but when it comes to an actual person? He's out of his element. He can't do that.

I'd like to point out that Kira's behavior with his girlfriends isn't entirely sexually charged. There's a romantic aspect, too. I think this is also in part due to his inability to communicate with others. He can't form meaningful connections with living people, he's socially isolated and even the interactions with his dead father's photo-ghost are one-sided and shallow on his part. But there is part of him that wants a controlled romance entirely under his management. This, I think, comes from his obsessive-compulsive personality and possible autism. People with autism spectrum disorder find it very hard to deal with change, unpredictability, and things that don't fit their exact expectations. One of the criteria for this disorder is rigid thinking and need for schedule and structure. Every single time Kira is mentioned or on-screen, this obsessive need for normalcy is shown. He goes to bed at the exact same time every night. He wakes up at the exact same time every morning. He's put-together and goes to work and makes sure every single hair is in the right place. He cannot stand when something is "wrong," like Koichi's sock being inside-out. This also could be OCPD or OCD, but I think autism is at play as well, considering OCD doesn't often manifest in the "perfectionist" way. The biggest evidence of OCD in my opinion is his magical thinking in terms of his fingernail rituals and tendency for collections and repetition. But that's just me. This is all related to the romantic aspect of his fetishism, I promise. He seeks out warmth and romance in a way that he can digest, without the unpredictability of a living person. He selects the exact properties he wants in a partner, and nothing else. That's the only way he can be comfortable with any form of connection.

When Kira isn't pulling the strings, he's wrapped up in them. From the moment he shows up onscreen, he's micromanaging and avoiding living contact unless absolutely necessary, always with the goal of preserving his lifestyle. It makes perfect sense why he'd only want to interact with the dead.
