Horrid middle aged woman driven mad by grief ascends to 'godhood' and dresses up like a landsknecht, more at 7.
My hero of Kvatch, Constantine. More below
Once the Arena Grand Champion, this middle aged bastard got thrown into prison after her moonlighting ties to the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood were revealed, completely by accident on Hieronymous Lex's part (after he was strangely re-assigned to Anvil).
Irreverant, apathetic, rash, and sometimes cruel, Constantine 'Shadowfoot' Sangre was an Arena highlight, who knew how to play the crowd during matches. She is infamous for winning the Grand Champ title with nothing but a dagger.
Constantine initially avoided Uriel's wishes of going to Weynon Priory, instead choosing to relish in her regained freedom by doing favours for Daedric Princes, and going after those who caused her imprisonment. But, seeing smoke on the Gold Road, and hearing of Daedra raiding the town, Constantine unknowingly, finally, heeded the call and raced to Kvatch before it was too late, amulet in tow. Martin had initially taken her for a Mythic Dawn assassin, because of this.
Despite a rocky, head-butting start, Constantine and Martin soon found camaraderie in one another. Constantine impressed by Martin's ties to Sanguine (and it humanising him in her eyes), and Martin recognising a kindred lost soul. Constantine, having had little to no friends who didn't want one thing or another in exchange, didn't realise what she was feeling was friendship - and kissed Martin at one point, to both of their confusions. They continue as friends, until Martin's destined, tragic end.
In her grief, having lost the companionship of Angronak, Methredhel, Lucien Lachance, and Martin during the war, Constantine seeked out the Shivering Isles. Her ascension to Madness was no less inevitable as Martin's own fate.

I really like to headcanon that the reason a young Martin and his friends chose Sanguine as their patron is that the general perception of Sanguine to the common folk is similar to our own common painting of Sanguine as a mostly harmless, fun-loving prankster.
Like, Hermaeus Mora would seem like the choice most aligning with their objectives, judging from Martin's dialogue, but I like to think they weren't quite that foolish enough to ignore the risks in consorting with... at least the more dubiously-presented Princes.
Sanguine, meanwhile... he doesn't seem terrible on first impression. Even compared to the other "fun" Prince, Sheogorath, he would be less liable to flay you on a whim for his amusement. But I like to think Sanguine has made this amiable representation of himself as part of his lure. After all, the you feel fine for the first few drinks; your first experience tripping on skooma feels euphoric, transcendent. The party is all fun and games until you get carried away, you take a dose too much and tip over the edge into a downward spiral of dependence and excess beyond the body's natural limit.
Additionally, his dialogue implies they were likely still Arcane University students by the time they wading deeper into daedrology and Sanguine worship.
They were college kids.
I can't think of a better Prince that would appeal to frat boy lifestyle than Sanguine.

Please PLEASE tell us more about M'rasha and Martin! 🙏 ANYTHING
They dated when they were young! Very classic childhood friends-to-lovers situation. He’d do odd jobs for her grandma and she’d watch his dad’s livestock - attached at the hip since they were like twelve. Martin had the idea to enter the Mages’ Guild and that’s where things started to go wrong.
M’rasha loved fun and mischief but was NOT about the partying and Sanguine worship (especially because iirc Sanguine is a bit more malicious in the Khajiit pantheon of spirits). She wanted to be practical; prepare to set themselves up for a normal life. Martin, I imagine, was pretty restless as a young man. They loved each other but he loved the idea of debauchery and arcane power more. Domesticity wasn’t an interest. His new friends didn’t help and he broke up with her shortly after.
They don’t rekindle their friendship (and briefly, romance) PROPERLY until the events of the game.

I've been thinking a lot about how Martin mantled Akatosh, the eldest of the gods, the one who literally brings life to the planet through sunlight and growth to everything on it through time, who is the source of empires and control, whose existence brought the concept of law into the world. And he did it in a single moment of desperate necessity, giving up everything and leaving the mortal realm forever for just a few seconds with the power needed to save it.
And then I think about how the Hero of Kvatch mantled Sheogorath, the (arguably) youngest of the gods, the one who was inadvertently created by the others and fills in all the spaces between them, who makes life worth living through music and color, who allows and enables the mortal mind to expand past the limits placed upon it by all the others, the only one who believes in free will and is willing to destroy anything to preserve it. And how they had chance after chance to turn back, to give up, but set their feet and held their ground and took the reins of eternity to protect a world that wasn't even theirs.
I think about how Akatosh is a reflection of Anu on the surface of Nirn, and Sheogorath is the Sithis-shaped hole in the world, and I wonder if that's why it turned out like this. If the world was meant to end in the Oblivion Crisis, and the two of them together re-anchored the pillars that support reality by mantling the two mortal-compatible aspects thereof. I wonder if they saved the world in ways they didn't even understand at the time.
I wonder if they know that they're still working together, even now, even if they'll never see each other again. I wonder if they know they're still halves of a whole, a Chosen Two who will never be remembered for what they actually did, only for what they left behind. Martin will only ever be a name he didn't knows was his own, Septim, and The Hero will never be anything but their first harrowing battle, Kvatch, losing their own name forever by becoming Sheogorath.
I think about it, and I wonder. I hope they know. It seems the least of what they both deserve.

So, Elder Scrolls theory crafting. People born under the atronach sign are considered disabled. Literally anyone else in Tamriel can generate their own Magicka, but atronach sign folks need potions or external sources or they'll run dry. Maybe this even affects their mental or physical health in more relatable ways!

I know a lot of people like to believe that Martin grew up in Kvatch all his life, but I think differently. Here’s why
The city closest to the Shrine of Sanguine is Skingrad.
Skingrad is also very much a city of farmers. We see sheep herders (occasionally) and there are two massive grape farms around the city. Other city’s have farms too of course but Skingrad definitely is a rich place for farming compared to the other cities.
Martins father was a farmer. Martin became a Sanguine worshiper. Skingrad is closely related to both of those things. So I prefer to believe that Martin grew up with his farmer father in Skingrad til a bunch of Sanguine worshippers came into town and roped Martin into joining them.
Later, when he left, he felt as if he couldn’t return to his home and traveled down south to Kvatch where he came to know Akatosh and his chapel.
#yah i dont get the idea of him living in kvatch#to be entirely honest i dont even really see him living in a major city at all#i feel like he grew up in the countryside or something#but if he WERE to live in a city#or near one#skingrad is a great contender#rb
