as a fujoshi understander, as some of you may know, i have an answer for this. it’s because traditional yaoi isn’t about gay people or gay culture, really. i do not subscribe to the notion that they generally fetishize gay people. i believe this is a grave misunderstanding. traditional yaoi is an experiment involving the removal of the female victim from the sexual regime of heterosexuality, so that women feel more comfortable eroticizing said regime. they are negotiating their place in a patriarchal sexual culture. if they can be accused of “fetishizing” anything, it is heterosexuality. if you find heterosexual norms hot, then yes, homophobia is compatible with that desire. they’re putting two men in a heterosexual relationship. they’re creating a fantasy where men are sexually subordinate to the oppressors of women, and the limitations of said regime remain intact. it is both subversive and regressive.

I was going to say the appeal of yaoi is a story where both parties have equal levels of autonomy in their day to day life. And you know what i think im right, 9 times out of 10.

I think it speaks to the dysfunctionality of the typically straight relationship dynamic, where one party takes ownership of the other whether it's intentional or not. That shit is frankly unattractive to a lot of people, hence why genres like queer romance stories are so popular. It's a narrative of love between equals, and something about that is steaming hot to people.

I wish people were more keen on exploring transgenderism in characters in interesting ways. And I'm not really talking about "robot is metaphor for being trans" I'm not really talking about metaphor at all. To be specific... Being trans for a "strange" or "wrong" reason not just to alleviate dysphoria or not identifying with your assigned gender at birth.

I realize we are barely over the "representation" hurdle so I guess this kind of fiction is a few decades out. Alas.
