Wings unseen

People tend to ignore my wings. I never see their eyes follow them, despite how uncommon it is for people to have wings. When I brush them against someone, they don’t seem to feel it. They even act surprised when I flinch.

Of course I am too polite to press anyone on the issue. Perhaps they don’t know how to react to a girl with wings. There is no need to search for some conspiracy. But still, it is odd. Never once has anyone commented on them. My family is repeatedly refused by the wing holes I cut in my clothes. How difficult is it to understand?

Surely it would be impossible to not realize that I am divinely chosen. That God in heaven chose me to carry out His will on Earth. My wings are the sign of a celestial ascendancy unthinkable to any mortal being, a signal not only of purity but of significance in the eternal struggle, a gift, for what they signal, how they read, but also a curse, in their weight, in their responsibility.

Surely all of that is obvious for anyone to see. Everybody must know what they are. So there must be some other reason for everyone to act like my wings don’t exist.

dreams of flight

Sometimes I have dreams where I’m flying. I always wake with a jump- surprised by the darkness of the night and by the feeling of my mattress. At once just like falling and yet.

Sometimes, on nights like tonight, I have to get out of bed. If only for a moment, I say. My apartment has a balcony. The air is almost cold enough to freeze, but my nerves are elsewhere. The wind pours through my wings, each feather alight. I can’t close my eyes or I’ll lose myself- learned that the hard way. If I don’t think about it, the road lights look like they’re below me.

The wind slips through my head as I slide down the slope that the once flat ground takes. The whole world grows around me. Walls and trees and time all augment in the wind while the stars spell out words.

Of course I can’t read the words, not in flight, but I know who they’re for. When I’m her again I’ll ask her what they mean. If I can. If if if.

Sometimes my wings slip out from under me. Sometimes the wind drops me down, down. Falling isn’t scary. It’s just like falling asleep. Roads twist and curve as my sight morphs the ground it lands on. I close my eyes to protect it.

Suddenly I see everything much more clearly. The cold has a sieve against my fingers so I can not open the lock, so I can not follow it. Everything is so close, so close. I know what I have to do, but not if I am able to do it. Everything is so far away. I reach out, I step, everything twists.

I come to on the floor, and move to let myself back in to bed. I shiver myself to sleep and wonder what happened.
