“Eureka” makes me cry
It was on a random Tuesday afternoon when Hoshino Gen dropped a short snippet of Eureka. I was in the middle of class and when I checked my Twitter to see what’s up, I saw… This tweet.
(idk how to embed tweets on here lol)
Maracas? That’s new. I didn’t know what to expect! I went to the restroom to giggle and listened to the preview… I immediately got excited! At that point, his “new” music was Why/Life which was released December of 2023.
New music?!?! After a year of nothing!?!? I was extremely EXCITED!!!
He would drop two teasers that would break me, and the internet (HSNGN Twitter). The song would then be released on January 28, 2025, his birthday! As expected, I stayed up late to listen to the song the moment it got released. However, due to time zone issues (I guess), I had to wait longer than most people. After an hour of waiting, it finally released on YouTube Music and boy… It… It made me feel emotional. I first listened to it with my headphones on and eyes closed, just to Get a Feel (pun intended) of the song. But it was only when I saw and read the English lyrics while listening to the song where… I actually teared up, hence the title of this post!
It might be because it was around 1 AM or maybe the lyrics itself that hit home. But there really is something about this certain part of the song that makes me feel reassured (?). At the timestamp 1:48, the lyrics he sings is as follows (translated in English).
As I live like I’m dancing I get lonely But these feelings can be shared
The way he sang the second line… When he sings the words もらった 寂しいは… I felt… Seen? It was the same feeling I had whenever I would listen to Kuse no Uta (I will definitely talk about this song eventually). It was something I couldn’t describe.
It felt like a hug.
When the music video and recently (relative to when this post was made) the behind the scenes were released, it added to that comforting factor the song had. It felt like he was going back to his roots, his first few releases. May it be the genre he’s getting into or the overall message of the song… It felt authentic. Just like the music video for Kuse no Uta, Eureka was filmed like a home video with the artist being the highlight, the song felt personal.
And I think that’s the word I was looking for, personal. I have yet to look into his writing process and the whole history behind the song, but as a student in Game Art and Design, someone who experiences burn out often, this song… Lifted my spirit. With how he sang the song, the instruments used in it, and the overall R&B feel of it… Compared to his other previous releases where it would at times be flashy, this song felt intimate, feeling as if he, himself, was telling me to not give up and to keep on going (I know I sound insane but this is what I would feel whenever I listen to it).
I certainly cannot wait for his album to drop! It seems to explore the artist more and what or rather who GEN is.
See you on May 14!!!!
