ok so we've heard of toxic g/t via a giant being cruel treating a tiny inhumanely yadda yadda BORING. I need toxic g/t via absolutely diabolical tinies. we can have an infinitely kind human with a caring heart and a borrower that is fully willing and ready to exploit it to hell and back. a human that's easily swayed and guilted and a borrower that plays weaker and more helpless than they are on purpose to manipulate them. borrower that's an actual horrible influence on the human, living vicariously through them and encouraging them to make bad decisions and take risky actions. human can't reach out to anyone about this as to not expose their poor little friend that's really more a devil on their shoulder. toxic ratatouille ✋😐🤚

The Issue of Scope and the Reality of Realism (...Really!)
Hey everyone, It's Sprouty! Game Dev, G/t fan, and all-around dumbass! I've already received some wonderful advice and ideas from members of the community, and I want to extend my thanks again to everyone who reached out:
Thank you all so much for your support! It's really lit a fire in my heart to make something great. But first, we all need to sit down and have a talk about the realities of game development. Specifically, I'd like to talk about scope and realism, as it pertains to G/t games. (To be clear, this isn't an official post from me as a studio or dev. This is a personal post from a member of the G/t community.)
I'll be quite honest: There's a reason people don't make many G/t games. And that reason is a specific and unique problem I like to call
The Detail Floor
You see, in order for a developer to accurately display the difference between "Big" and "Small" a minimum level of detail is required. And that minimum level? Much, much higher than it is for other games.
To give an example, let's take a VERY detailed model from a popular game: (Disclaimer: I do not claim ownership of these characters, models, game or any of the tools used to get these screenshots. It is being used for purely educational / demonstrative purposes.) Here's Big Boss from MGS5 : Ground Zeroes. I've loaded him into Garry's Mod (GM_Flatgrass) (Quick credit to Steam User "no loafing" for his ragdoll re-size tool.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can see, the model looks fantastic, even though it's over 10 years old. I'm sure it took many artists and multiple weeks to get it looking so good. The hands are nice and detailed too! (Excuse the awkward pose. Was going for an extended hand, but Garry's mod is not easy to work with.) Now let's make him BIIIG:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well... He definitely looks great in that first pic. A little bit blocky on the hand but otherwise, very nice. The second pic? His hand definitely has some visible polygons, as well as an odd geometry split??? His pouches and canteen... let's not sugarcoat it. They look very fake. But none of this is the fault of the artists or developers! It was never meant to be seen this closely.
And that's assuming that I, a programmer with virtually zero modeling experience, can get character models on par with this! A model from an 80 million dollar game. Any models I could realistically get would be much closer to the Half-Life 2 models. And uhh...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Those hands are already a bit rough looking. And I haven't even made her big yet! This is why people don't make games from a tiny perspective: It puts every detail of your game under a microscope!
And if you're wondering about 2D games? It's basically the same issue, but instead of hyper-realistic models, you need hyper-realistic art. Otherwise, everything is just a big wall of pixels.
Okay, Okay. But what about from the Bean's perspective?
Now that's a bit more achievable! But it runs into an 'equal and opposite' problems: How much detail is needed to be able to clearly see the tiny, their expressions, and their gestures?
How much post-processing, particle effects and shaders can be used before the tiny gets overshadowed? And that's assuming none of that stuff glitches out.
Wait, why would it glitch out?
Oof. It really pains me to break the news, but...
A more detailed world, means more detail for everything. Physics, collision, lighting, EVERYTHING. And even modern game engines are not equipped to handle that
Wait! But what about-
Shadow of the Colossus? Large, empty environments with basically all of the code and processing power going to making the giant bosses work well. It's frankly a miracle what they were able to achieve, and even then, they couldn't manage to populate the world with them.
Chibi-Robo? A fantastic game that put so much detail into the characters and environment. But those character models are rough and think about it: did the humans in that game ever move? Nope! The stand in the exact same spot until the story progresses, then stand in a different spot. I love the original Chibi-Robo, it's a gold-standard G/t game! But even a team of veteran devs (skip ltd.) couldn't achieve realistic G/t and they were being funded by Nintendo!!
{Insert other game here}? Look, we could go over examples for a long time. But the point is: it has never been done to the level all of us have been dreaming of. And it likely never will. Every game that's come close has focused on a 'big detailed world', 'detailed interactions with giants', or tradition game content (gameplay, story etc). We just can't have it all
So that's it then? Good G/t games are impossible?
Hm? I just listed two amazing G/t games! I wasn't trying to say Chibi-Robo and Shadow of the Colossus aren't great G/t games. I was trying to make a point:
Compromise is inevitable. This is true for all game development, and art in general.
It's totally possible to make a very detailed model, and put it in a game with very detailed hand-play. ...But you can't be surprised when the entire game takes place on a one desk, with a fixed camera angel. This is what's known as a 'Vertical slice'. All the details and polish, but with a very limited amount of content/features. It is totally possible to make the borrower sim that everyone wants! ...But it will be janky, ugly looking, probably not fun to play, and crash frequently. This is a 'Horizontal slice'. All of the features, none of them polished, refined or even fully completed. (I believe this is the worst possible way to go about things)
And most of all: it is very possible to make a tradition game with a side focus on tiny or giant characters. In this situation: interactions would be shallow and simple, but wholesome and frequent! (In case you couldn't tell, this is what I think makes the best game.)
...Alright, I guess? What was the point of this post again?
the point, dear reader, is that great G/t games can be made. But they require developers to have clear priorities and stick to them!So please,
Tell me your priorities. It's like that part at the beginning of Kingdom Hearts: What powers do you seek? What powers will you give up?
Sense of scale?
Visual polish?
Game stability?
Accessibility (System specs)
Playable area?
Gameplay features?
Accessibility (Game price)
Story?
...something else?
This is why I started this blog. This is what I'm here to find out!
So please, think it over and share what you want most. Thank you for reading, and have a lovely day 😊

so funny that humans imagined a creature that is like a human but bigger and called it a “giant”. that’s such an uncreative name. that’s just an adjective. “it’s a giant!” “a giant what?!” “a giant… um. yeah. giant.”
