hinata.

@guidescrows​ asked for a starter! 

“Okay!” Hinata gets into position, eyes determined and a ghost of an ever present smile on his lips. “I’m ready, Suga!” 

Hinata had to admit he wasn’t sure why he was picked to bake the goodies for the bake sale, but he wasn’t going to let his senpai’s down! 

     suga has to laugh. it figures that hinata would approach baking the same way he approaches everything else -- boundless enthusiasm and determination. he can’t pretend he wasn’t a little surprised to be paired with hinata for baking duty, but he supposes it can’t end up much worse than two years ago, when the beeping of the oven startled asahi so badly he dropped an entire tray of pastries on the floor, or last year, when nishinoya actually managed to set fire to the kitchen.

     “that’s the spirit!” he grins, ruffling hinata’s hair with no small amount of force. “have you ever baked before, hinata?”

     “uh...”

     pinching himself would be a little too cliché, but he can’t help but gape just a little at the, uh, him standing before him. except they aren’t him, obviously, because he’s him, but they also look way, way too much like him to be anyone but him, and as far as suga’s aware he doesn’t have any long-lost twins, and while they do say that, statistically, there are seven people in the world who look just like you, he never thought that was like, a real thing--

     “i’m...me.” that’s a weak retort. you can do better than that, come on. “or, at least, i’m sugawara koushi, so unless you’re sugawara koushi, then i guess i’m not you--” a hand comes up to ruffle the back of his head, and he chuckles weakly, an awkward attempt to make this whole thing less weird. “but uh, same hat, i guess?”

     he may have lost his flag multiple times -- but he’s proud of his team. he’s high fiving every single one of them. you get a suga high five. you get a suga high five. everyone gets a suga high five.

     he’s got a flag again – now that iwaizumi won his back and returned it to him, suga is ready to reenter the fray. except that, before he’s gone very far, kenma is before him, simply…asking for his flag.

     suga barks out a laugh; that’s not really how this game is supposed to work, is it? except hadn’t yaku said something about handing his flag off to one of the kenmas? this whole game has dissolved into something a little too ridiculous to take seriously, so after a moment, suga goes ahead and drops his flag into kenma’s hand. “you know what? sure. i didn’t really earn it, anyway.”

their hands snap together like they're mimicking crab claws. goes to try and snatch up suga's flag.

     it’s a close one -- fukunaga’s quiet, and suga, focused on watching what’s happening to his right, almost doesn’t notice them sneaking up. but he finally catches sight of them in his periphery, and manages, just in time, to leap out of the way, letting out a startled yelp as he does so. “whoa! almost got me!” then comes a determined grin: “but i promised not to go down easy!”

"Suga-san I managed to get a flag and mine is safe !! How are you doing ?!"

     “not quite as great, i’m afraid.” his voice is rueful, a hand coming up to rub at his neck as he stares in the direction the other nishinoya has run with his flag. if only this noya had arrived a bit sooner, maybe he’d have stood a better chance. “i dodged lev, but the other nishinoya stole my flag. tragic, isn’t it?” he cants his head, then, casts a playful smile in noya’s direction. “be sure to avenge me, won’t you?”

He hates doing this but it must be done for the good of his team. Darting in from the side nishinoya makes a leap for Suga's flag, attempting to snatch it away. "IM SORRY SUGA-SAN"

     “nishinoya!” oh, the shock, oh, the betrayal! he isn’t fast enough to match nishinoya’s speed, and so his flag is ripped away, and suga is left bereft of both flag and trust. he’s left only to cup his hands and call after the libero as he darts away: “i’m hurt, nishinoya! betrayed! after all i’ve done for you!” he’s joking, of course, but also, guilt-tripping is a legitimate tactic, right?

he's here, ready to steal. "hi, suga-san!" he chirps. he doesn't know this guy well, only knows that he's been on the bench a couple times. tries to swipe at his flag.

     suga was prepared for someone to try for his flag eventually. he’s been staying out of the way, shouting encouragements to his team and occasionally acting as a distraction, but now he finds himself targeted by nekoma’s lanky first year. luckily, fast as lev is, his long, snatching arm isn’t hard to see coming, and suga ducks, darting out of the way. “hi, lev!” he calls back cheerfully, hopping backwards to evade any further attacks. “better luck next time!”

                           “i want to be in the game. i want to stay here longer.

                                             i want to stay with these guys. 

               give me the thrill of the court. i want to fight with these guys longer.”

“SUGA-SAN !!! We’re on the same team so that means we’re gonna destroy the first team. “

     “THAT’S THE SPIRIT!” he’s grinning, always happy to feed off nishinoya’s enthusiasm, and gives the libero one of his signature slaps on the back -- the ones that are always so much harder than he seems to realize. “between you, me, and asahi, they won’t know what hit them!”

“L-LIKE THIS, S-SUGA…?”

It’s clear that the child is unsure, which only betters his reasoning for wanting to teach her AWAY from the team. When you don’t know what you’re doing, you don’t want to be on the courts. Besides, his gentle guidance and reassuring demeanor helps to encourage Ariana’s confidence. She wants to be as good as him, and the rest of the team!

So QUICK and skilled, she wonders how they do it; bouncing all over the court to chase after a single BALL. But – first – before he can explain those specific details, they have to bounce the ball at each other. Not HARSHLY; just enough for the ball to bounce off the floor and go towards the other.

Following his instruction, she completes such actions, bouncing the ball towards him as GENTLY as she could.  

     there’s an energy to the frenzy of the court that, for all its controlled chaos, suga loves -- whether it’s a fast-paced three-on-three practice match or a steady series of receives and sets practiced alongside his teammates, the gym is an atmosphere that’s come to feel like home.

     still -- there’s something nice about tossing a ball just for fun, away from the hustle and bustle and competition of the court. they’ve got the gym to themselves for now, and ari’s earnest innocence makes suga smile. it’s like back when he was first tossing balls for his little sibling, except that ariana is a lot less boisterous than kaede. 

     it’s a little short -- he has to reach forward to catch the ball by the tips of his fingers. still, he grins encouragingly. “just like that! maybe just a little farther -- see that line on the floor, right in the middle of us? try to hit that line with your next bounce, and it should come right back up into my hands! like this, see?” and he aims his own bounce at the line, controlling the arc so that it should bounce up at the right height for her to catch it.
