The "eating with tax collectors and sinners" passage is one that I think most Christians misuse quite badly.
On the progressive side, it's usually invoked in the context of things they don't think are sins, or, at least intellectually recognise as sins but feel little instinctual revulsion towards. For this camp, I recommend imagining Christ eating with oil barons and Klansmen to achieve the effect the passage would have had on its original readers.
On the conservative side, there's the common cope that "He did it to preach to them" or "but they repented", which is not in the text nor demanded by the overall teaching of Holy Scripture. For this camp, I recommend remembering that Our Father sends His sun on the evil and the good (Matthew 5:45) and feeds even adulterers and fornicators and sorcerers (St. John Chrysostom, Homily on the Epistle to the Hebrews, Homily 11 Section 10).

It’s funny that songs from the 1930s-1950s get registered as creepy because they’re old. Do you think horror movies made in 2095 will set their credits to Closer by the Chainsmokers
