SAPS Lose 8 Times More Guns Than Civilians
By Gideon Joubert. Cartoon stolen shamelessly from Jerm (with his permission). I was recently tasked with providing a government official with statistics comparing civilian firearm losses with those suffered by the SAPS. He was presented with a claim that the SAPS lose approximately 8 times as many firearms as private citizens, and asked me to investigate whether or not this is plausible. As…

The SANDF is Not Suited for Fighting Crime By Gideon Joubert It is with no small amount of concern that I regard the Minister of Police’s calls for SANDF soldiers to be deployed to so-called “criminal hotspots” in Gauteng and the Western Cape.

Yes - Women and Youngsters Can Shoot Better Than You By Reuben Kruger Sorry, that was a bit harsh….I don’t know if it is just me or is there a current explosion of new “instructors” in SA?

Shooting is a Learned Skill By Stefan Meyer As most of us are aware, shooting is a perishable skill. As with any hard skill, once it is practised and trained to a level of unconscious competence, further training often seems redundant.

Cross-Dominance: How to Identify the Problem
By Stefan Meyer Human conditioning runs deep. Most individuals will unthinkingly perform an action in a way for no reason other than they have been conditioned to have a preconceived expectation as to what is the correct method. (more…)

How Many SAPS Firearms Have Been Lost or Stolen in 2017?
A few weeks ago I was tasked with compiling a report for a government official regarding how many SAPS and other State-owned firearms have been lost or stolen this year so far. I had to rely exclusively on media reports, which were surprisingly thinly spread if one considers the SAPS have lost no fewer than 18 196 firearms in the six year period from 2005 until 2011. The Best Tool for the Job
By David de Beer I love guns, and if you’re reading this I’m sure most of you are rather fond of them as well. Given the choice, the money and the space, I would have at least one of every gun ever made. Whether good, bad, futuristic or just plain bonkers, guns have shaped the world by their use, their design and their technology. (more…)

Martin Hood's Presentation to the PPC
On 1 September Martin Hood gave a presentation to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Policing on behalf of the South African Arms & Ammunition Dealers Association. It was very well received, and is certainly a significant contribution towards the ongoing effort to protect South African gun ownership rights. You can access the full presentation here, but for the sake of easy access I provide…

Are You Resident, Or Are You Community?
By Harold F. Callahan Perhaps that title should read “are you ‘a’ resident, etc. But I chose it like it is. The national evolution to active neighbourhood watches, citizen patrols, Community Police Forum cooperation and general civilian mobilisation in the last five to ten years has been to the large part very encouraging. For many, many years the last word in “neighbourhood watch” was some…

Another 5 Undying Gun Ownership Myths
The previous instalment of 7 stubborn gun ownership myths that plainly refuse to kick the bucket was well received, but it was unfortunately not exhaustive – there are plenty more strange, stupid, and just-plain-crazy stories out there that masquerade as the truth. Here, for your reading pleasure. are 5 more nonsense stories I found. (more…)

By Phillip Marais Let’s face it, guns are fun. It’s what brought many of us to guns in the first place. Even some of the guys that bought guns for the sole purpose of self-defence will admit that they enjoy a range visit. (more…)
